Speight's status?

Submitted by JoeFink on
My biggest concern today is Wilton Speight's left shoulder. The way he was holding it at the end of the game didn't look good. Hoping for some good news today .

Don't think you can hang this all on Speight. There seemed to be a lot of un-called holding by Iowa's DBs who were getting beat and grabbing late. I think UFR will confirm there was a reason timing was so far off all night. Especially that last grab on Darboh' arm was just so blatant and the offical was looking right at it - how do you not call PI on that play? I think the refs were intimidated by the crowd.

Iowa played their asses off. If we would have made the plays, we'd have won. Just that simple. Having said that (and while I always hate to point out ref issues), there was nothing even handed about the officiating. Ticky-tack shit called on us and blatant calls ignored on them. Their secondary and o-line both seemed pretty grabby. It seemed that with every missed call and resulting stalled opportunity, they gave the Hawkeyes the green light to hold even more and gave the crowd more impetus. The safety finally flipped momentum, once and for all. That crowd was jacked.

By the way, whose idea is it to play these night road games in places where we always seem to struggle? You just knew the first time you saw this night game at Iowa on the schedule, this was going to be a problem.

the fact that two pro style run offenses have gashed us on the ground. I had several alarm bells going off after the State game and now they are all going. It was amazing to see how much better Iowa, yes F-ing Iowa, was at sealing the edge than we were.

And can you imagine what OSU is going to do? Meyer has got to be licking his chops after seeing us get exposed on the edge the last few weeks.

I could see Weber, Samuel and Barrett all combine for at least 300 yards on the ground.

Will have better linebackers. Peppers is kind of playing more of a hybrid out of necessity. He is too small to play the position he is playing. Delano Hill is playing the "Peppers position" really because we need athleticism in the linebacker core and Peppers theoretically provides that. Furbush, Gideon, McCray. These guys are solid but they are not State-of-the-art.

they did.  D played well enough to win most any other game where the O puts together anything of substance and ST plays solid - unfortunately that didnt occur.  few observations / stats:

iowa only scored 12 points on O, all of which came on short fields (went 50 yards for 6 before halftime, then 40 yards for FG off hill fumble to open the 3rd, finally 20 yards for the game winner).  230 yards and 12 points, great #s vs most Os and normally enough to beat most teams.  m has the personnel, depth and experience on D to shut out average Os with great execution but they didnt - didnt have any defenders take over the game, didnt execute well enough on those 3-4 key drives where iowa had short fields (iowa has d1 athletes and coaches too so thats not always gonna happen, even with great Ds).

allowing wadley like 75% of iowas 230 total yards isnt ideal.  he made some great plays but m missed a ton of tackles, didnt get off blocks often / fast enough, got caught in several bad calls, etc - wadley is talented but m shouldve keyed him more and forced someone else to move the chains.

67 and 43 played like the all league players they are, m struggled to block them and they really impacted the game.  m had some guys step up with big plays but not enough nor at the right moments - chesson, darboh, speight, etc, they all had chances to make plays to turn / win the game.  wadley and those dudes on D made those plays for iowa.  its not all on the players though as harbaugh and crew were outcoached in rare instance (so far).  learn from it, forget it and move on

It is bizarre.  Would have thought that, like WI, no pro style ground game was going anywhere with our DL.  Makes me wonder if the injuries causing Glasgow and Mone to be less than 100% are having a bigger effect on us.

I'd like to think that if his collarbone were broken, (or if there was speculation it may be) he'd have been out of the game and getting an X-Ray.  There was a time where for a brief moment I thought that maybe Harbaugh would switch to O'Korn last night, but given what Speight did late in the Wisconsin game, I can understand why no change was made.

Just watched the post-game interview of Speight and he was taking questions and did not look in pain. If he had a broken collarbone, it would have swelled up, he would have been in severe pain in a sling and never allowed to talk with the media. Now if he has an MRI back home and it shows a ligament tear, then he may not play against Indiana. Hopefully, it is just a strain and no material damage. He said he just had a bad night and missed his chances too many times, no mention of shoulder issue.

Also my diagnosis as an attorney from home.

The way he was holding his left arm and hand in one position, the way the hand looked paralyzed in one position, yet the "problem" was in the shoulder area, the way trainers were reaching under his pads in the collarbone area, and the way he winced when they did--

Looked like collarbone.
