Sparty White Helmets

Submitted by Rick Grimes on

It looks like nothing was put on the board about this, but MSU has brand new white helmets which they will be debuting against Western Michigan on Sept. 9

What are your thoughts on this guys? I suppose it makes a lot of sense since white is one of their two colors and many teams have added white helmets in recent years. Hopefully Western ruins the debut of these.

There's not enough lipstick in the world to pretty up the mess that is MSU.  A new helmet isn't even a drop in the bucket no matter what it looks like.

I'm thinking this is more about throwing any kind of news out there that will distract from the total shitshow that is going on in EL.

Sparty is down almost an entire recruiting class' worth of players. And that's assuming there's no further dismissals or injuries. They're going to have to fight just to get to bowl eligibility.

The green and white color scheme has always been hideous.  I think these new white helmets look kind of cool.  I have always been fond of the white helmets such as Nebraska or Tennessee.

Sparty's got issues,

I (don't) feel bad for them son -

They've got 99 problems,

but helmets ain't one.

(Seriously, their football uniforms and helmets aren't bad.  They finally settled on a decent shade of green and a decent helmet design.  While their uniforms aren't any great shakes, they're one of the better things that football program has going for them.)

I am beginning to hate the soccer-ification of college football jerseys. New jerseys every single year begins to get lame and dilute your identity. Unless you're Oregon, where your identity is essentially to have outlandish jerseys every year, it's worthless for programs like State.

I see it looks like they kept the top stripe that is wider at the front and narrows as you move towards the back. I've never liked that look. Call me a traditionalist.

I don't like the look.  But I believe it's supposed to represent the plume on the greek battle helmets, which made it more appropriate and tolerable once I learned that.

emphasis mine :)

Some background: MSU hasn't worn White Helmets since the 1954 Season. They only wore them previous to that in 1947.

In Biggie Munn's first season, he decided to drop the black and gold uniforms that they had worn under Charlie Bachman, and go back to Green and White. He wanted White Helmets with the White Jerseys and Green Helmets with the Green Jerseys. The first game of the season was against Michigan, they wore the whites and lost 55-0. Biggie Munn retired the white helmets believing them to be bad luck. MSU went 7-1 the rest of the season, with only a 1 point loss to 14th ranked Kentucky (if you can believe that).
Fast forward to 1954. Biggie Munn retired from coaching, and became the AD of MSU. He promoted his top assistant Duffy Daughtery to the HC roll. Duffy thought it would be a good idea to bring back the White/Green dual helmets and try again. MSU was no. 7 going into the season coming off a 9-1 Rose Bowl/B1G Championship season, ranked No. 3 in the county the previous season. They would wear the White's at home with the white uniforms. The lost their first home game to Wisconsin wearing the White's 6-0. They lost their second home game wearing the Whites to Purdue 27-13.
The season crumbled to a 3-6 disaster.
It was the only under .500 season for MSU between 1947 and 1958...an 11 season period which saw MSU post a record of 81-19-2, won 2 Rose Bowls, and MSU first National Championship. Biggie Munn gave Duffy a big "I told you so" and wouldn't allow White Helmets to be worn during his tenure as AD which lasted to 1971. Up until now, it had been tradition within the Athletic Department that white helmets were bad luck and they haven't been worn since.
Perhaps they feel that MSU's luck couldn't get any worse, so they'll try again?

I am sorry, as "fresh" as that may be, I just don't see the point of painting a turd a different color. Instead of uniforms, logos, etc, this program needs to work on getting back to MSU football. Circle the wagons, start at the roots, and make sure the program has been purged of any of the poison that was there. I respect Sparty, I respect Mork as a man, not so much as a coach, even thought if I was not Maize and Blue through and through, I might like him. Fix the culture, fix the team, cut the fat, and get the program back to a healthy state of being. Mak, you can do this.

Like putting a fresh coat of paint on a house that has a crumbling foundation. I think Staee still has some decent players but not much depth and has basically no room for injuries or error. I could see them winning 7 games as I don't think their schedule is a tough as last season. Also wouldn't be surprised if they won only 2 or 3 games.

Only on mgoblog can you find this much gold in a Sparty thread where the OP has 3 positive votes and 9 negs.  Where else is blog choreography this perfect?
