Southwest Airlines Cancelled 2/3rds of flights

Submitted by MikeB1GMike on December 27th, 2022 at 1:01 PM

Hey everyone, I was browsing around and noticed Southwest is cancelling 2/3rds of their flights up until Saturday due to issues within their system. I figured this was relevant news for anyone that is traveling and may have booked their flights to the CFP through them.

This is the kind of stuff that makes me think this failure will be the straw that breaks SW in the long-run. You don’t screw all your committed customers like this without losing a good chunk of them. And you don’t lose a good chunk of your loyal customers without going under entirely. Lots of people right now saying “I’ve flown SW for forever, but never again.” That’s a nail in the coffin if I’ve ever seen one.

This is one of the several reasons I hate flying. If I never set foot on a plane again, I'd be perfectly happy.  Too bad train travel is not a really a viable option in this country (believe me, I've tried).

Too bad train travel is not a really a viable option in this country (believe me, I've tried).

Yeah. There are some limited examples that work well, such as the NE Corridor (DC-Baltimore-Philly-NYC-Boston), you can take the train from MI to Chicago, etc. But in general it's just not practical. Although part of that is simply geography. Other than maybe China, which I think has made a big push for high-speed rail recently, most of the countries that you typically think of as leaders in rail travel are tiny (and compact) compared to the very large, and spread out, US. Hell, Europe is like the size of the Eastwood mall...

If you live, work and travel in the Northeast Corridor then its doable since everything is so compressed and the infrastructure seems better able to handle train travel in that part of the country. But yeah beyond that, Amtrak is slow, outdated, useless eyesore. I took the train from Ann Arbor to Chicago about ten years ago. Would've been faster to take Megabus. That trip, along with the return one, was easily 7+ hours each way. I'd never set foot on an Amtrak train if it involved a cross country trip.

Europe has got high speed train travel figured out. At least far better than the US does, anyway. We should be able to figure it out as well.

I still maintain that size is the biggest obstacle to overcome for efficient US rail travel. Just look at this image of the US superimposed over Europe. Paris to Moscow looks roughly equivalent of Vegas to Traverse City. In other words, going from damn near one end of continental Europe to the other is only around 50-60% of the way across the US (and how many people are actually going that far?). For most trips in Europe you're only traversing the equivalent area of a US state or small cluster of states. Hell, Paris to Vienna (which is probably about as far east as most in Western Europe would typically be travelling) looks roughly equivalent to the length of the US NE Corridor (which as stated does have an efficient rail line running through it). I find it hard to fault the US for not having a better rail system vis-a-vis Europe when the logistics of actually building that kind of system for the whole country (as opposed to a small region) would be astronomically more complex...

True, but I've always envisioned a overlapping system of regional networks connecting big or medium sized cities that could then create a more robust national system. The east coast does work pretty great for rail travel and I even think Amtrak/the govt should do more to expand it and add more cars/trains/seats to alleviate traffic and promote train travel and make it cheaper.

But at the same time, the eastern seaboard network really isn't far from the midwest or south. In this day and age, I think it should be possible to create a reasonably fast line from NY to Cleveland or Pittsburgh, Detroit and Chicago. Going southwards- Richmond, Raleigh/Durham, Charlotte and coastal cities like Savannah and Charleston aren't far from DC/Baltimore. From there you can connect to Deep South cities and Florida. Texas and Florida should have their own networks to link up their big cities, giving their residents a travel option and taking strain off the roads.

The big problem is linking the outskirts of the midwest (KC/STL) with the Mountain West and Pacific Coast. Those distances get VAST.

But, the real problem to me is, like Perkis' slow Chi-Ann Arbor trip, is that there are basically no express Amtrak routes to compete with air travel. I've recently developed a deep hatred of flying and sought out options for taking the train to the east coast. Amtrak doesn't even come through Des Moines where I live (thanks Gov. Brandstad), but the Iowa-Chicago leg isn't the problem.  It's Chi to NY which stops at every small city (Gary, South Bend, Erie, Syracuse) and goes through upstate NY instead of directly across PA. it takes 17-19 HOURS!! Seems to me like it wouldn't take much to create an express line that could get to NY in 10 hours. I would absolutely consider that compared to ever setting foot in an airport ever again. Plus, you can ride in style on the train. Slower of course, but if the price was cheaper or on par with a flight, I would take it.

(sorry, this thread is a day or 2 old now and no one is probably reading this but I'm obsessed with this haha. I want to run for office/go into public service to make this happen).

When I worked for Boeing, SWA was a customer of mine. They epitomized American Capitalism: squeeze every possible dime out of your equipment and staff without cutting corners, leaving very little margin for hiccups.

It was equally incredible and a shitshow waiting to happen.

Its moments like these where who I truly feel bad for, aside from the thousands of families that are just stuck with no way of getting home, are the ticket agents, customer service phone reps, the flight attendants, and all the other Southwest employees who had absolutely nothing to do with this disaster, but they are going to be the ones dealing with the brunt of everyone's frustration.

The holidays are already a stressful enough time with traveling, especially if you are traveling with kids, and there are going to be a lot of Southwest employees who are going to get raked over the coals by angry customers who have no one else to vent their frustrations to, so they will take it all out on people who are just doing their jobs as best they can.

If I'm on Southwest's executive team, I'm getting my ass on the phones and helping my customer service reps out. I'm heading over to the airport, walking straight up to the ticket counter and asking "What can I do to help you?" They are going to have a lot to answer for when this is all said and done, but right now what's probably most important is for them to be showing their employees "Hey, I'm in this with you and I've got your back."

I have lived in the PHX area for 20+ years, we used to be big fans of SWA but they have really lost it over the past 5 years. No longer a bargain to fly them, but they still act like a bargain airline. We take them occasionally for short hops, but this past weekend was the last straw. Our 12/23 flight PHX->LAS (Vegas) was more than 2 hrs delayed for a 45 minute flight, but the return 12/26 was cancelled without ANY notification whatsoever either email, app or text. We were barely able to rent a car at the last moment, and drove back last night. Only problem- there were no one-way rentals available (lines were hours long at rental center) so we opted for a 5-day rental, and will be making a 24-hr trip back to Vegas end of this week. At least my wife will get to see Carrot Top at the Luxor...

We gave up SWA for American a few years ago, and now agree that next year we'll just drive.

Why is anyone booking SW for anything more than a 500-mile flight?

They cancel, you drive.

Depending on them to deliver you across the country, while stopping here and there, is just silly.  They are not “that much cheaper” to justify what’s happening now.

I've got news for you:  this is an epidemic of sorts among all airlines.  This summer I was supposed to fly from Brussels to O'Hare (United) and then catch a plane to Flint to get home (long story about why that happened).  Anyway, my flight from Brussels ended up an hour late (plus customs time) so missed my O'Hare-Flint flight which caused that reservation to be canceled with no confirmation on the next flight out.  So, I ended up driving home from Chicago.  When I arrived home, I realized that this flight and drive had required 24 hours.  United had also canceled my original flight from Detroit to DC (to Brussels) without warning at the last minute, which caused the whole itinerary to change, hence Flint-O'Hare-Vienna (!!)-Brussels, another 24 hour epic journey.

Can't wait to fly again.  Wait a minute...  yes, I will wait...

I’m pretty loyal to SW just because I very frequently fly out of Chicago Midway and DC’s Regan and they have super fast terminals. I seem to have dodged a bullet with only a few hours of delay this holiday but not gonna lie, it’s sucked seeing all the other airlines get out on time

I have learned the hard way to exclusively fly Delta whenever possible. Especially since DTW is a hub. Asia (multiple points) and Amsterdam and much of the US, they are so solid.

No, not perfect. But the best I've found. An occasional bad experience, but few and far between.

They definitely upgraded the Northwest service in Detroit.

I live in Atlanta and almost exclusively fly Delta as well (its the hub, so go figure). Only time I don't is if its on someone else's dime, like if I'm traveling for work. And even then, I prefer Delta.

Not everything is perfect, and its not the best airline I've ever flown (that belongs to Korean Air), but they're definitely the best I've had domestically. We also have the AmEx Delta Platinum card. I use it for everything and have racked up a ton of points in the process. Have two weddings this spring that my wife and I are going to and between points and her companion pass, everything is completely paid for. I don't think I've paid to check a bag in years. Annual fee isn't cheap but if you fly enough, it pays for itself multiple times over.

I know its not a credit card discussion, but if I have my pick of who to fly, I'm taking Delta and not thinking twice about it.

I did see that the Delta Lounge is upping the price on its one day passes so we don't get the discounted rate that we used to. I looked into the Reserve card over the summer because I think that gets you free access, but ultimately decided it wasn't worth it.

Didn't have anything to do with the annual fee, which I think is north of $500. It was steep but I could make it work. The issue was that we'd lose the 2x points on restaurant and grocery purchases, and that made me decide that making the switch wasn't worth it. Even with getting first class companion passes, I couldn't do it.

Learned my lesson last December. Our flight to Florida was cancelled 4 hours before departure because of "staff issues". I didn't bother to rebook which worked out because our return flight was cancelled too. I'll drive to my desired destinations for a few years

It's not too much more to fly privately.  You need to coordinate (book and resell to buddies/family), think it out, and book judiciously but some outfits are selling individual seats even. I have flown privately three times during Covid just for safety sake (and the bill was a whopper), but my eyes were opened to the added utility.

JSX - has one way flights Denver to Phoenix for $299. It's getting close to worth it. Net Jets is adding many jets to their fleet to keep up, its a year wait or more to get in with them. Other than JSX none of these are going to approach affordable, but it's getting there.

Excellent photo of the PanAm stewardesses (pardon the dated term). All of them had nursing accredidation, if I correctly recall.

I'm sure I speak for the entire board in saying their obvious intellect is what strikes us first as we reminisce...

My sister's SWA flight from Seattle got canceled so she has two tickets to sell.  Section 446 Row 13.  Face value is $195 each.  Post here and I can get you in touch if interested.

Yes, I can and do understand how bad SWA can be. They were one of the few zero flights into Vegas from my local airport years ago when I had to be there one week out of five for several years. Many frequent flier miles were gathered. I would only fly zero stop to avoid mid trip problems. At the time, the only things I hated were their refusal to assign seats, the prevalence of peanuts (family member allergy), and the experience resembling being in a Greyhound bus.

Once, they stopped the zero stop flights, I dumped them. Hooray! Had to drive to a more distant airport but was lucky enough to find zero stop flights.

Now? It's whoever will get me there zero stop, *excepting* SWA. They have been "fired" by my booking team.

Assigned seats, leg room upgrades, guaranteed storage bins. Nice!

Only flew SW once, from Chi to Philly, and it was a pain. Felt like the old days getting stuffed in the far back of old style planes with 3 seats on each side.

Long time Delta customer and enjoy them. Flying to Orlando for a week at Disney in mid-Jan. Hopefully, wearing a NC shirt! I've had Delta Sky Club membership for years. Has made travel much more relaxing.

Hope all of our fans get there on time!
