Has anyone indicated what the $4m bonus was for? I know loyalty was the thing in the contract, but he'd never had that before correct? That seems like it was a thank you bonus for 13 years of work, i.e. they knew and he knew 2019 was his last season (because that bonus was put in last year).
I think they knew all along and all of this is either covering of ass or made up rumors for clicks. It's all wonderful though.

It was a retention bonus. They're getting more common nowadays for high profile coaches. It's basically deferred salary that functions as a buyout if the coach takes another job.
It was in the contract he signed right after the 2015 season.

Not 100% certain but I believe it was a retention bonus. Generally speaking, those bonuses are placed into contracts when a school wants to provide an incentive for the coach to stay. The idea being that the extra cash and the January timing will keep the coach at your school past the normal "coaching carousel" time period in December.

Pride comes before the fall losers, you run your program like a second rate operation and you wonder why people don't give you the respect you desperately crave. Didn't have the guts to fire D"antoni when you should have so instead you go behind his back to find the next coach like cowards. Mork shouldn't even be mad, guys acting like an angry teenager quitting in a tweet like he did. He's been mediocre at best the past 3 years and got a 4.3 million bonus and a bs made up position in the athletic dept. that will pay him a million a year to NOT coach anymore. Fickel is looking like a genius right now for avoiding that dumpster fire of an athletic department. Also, Rico Beard is a p.o.s.slap, I hope he's as miserable right now as every other lame ass sparty fan. I remember him being on with Sam Webb predicting sparty going 11-2 this past season and said they were a dark horse playoff team. Lol. Im loving watching these hacks botch this whole situation, no sympathy here, let it burn! GO BLUE!

Frankly, this is better for MSU in the long run. The reason MSU totally bottomed out (aside from scandals) is that Mork just wanted to coast into his $4mil payday and ease into retirement without rocking the boat. No staff changes. No trying. The fact that he wanted to do that and then hand pick his replacement is basically saying Dantonio wanted to the insular little club he's got going now for another 5 years or more

Not trusting Rico on this. No coach quits over this. The timing is all wrong anyway. Seriously doubt the BoT/ Beekman started any kind of serious search or hired a firm.
Will know more once some smoke clears as I have some connection to the BoT from a generic answer standpoint.
The kind of "no one has been hired" answer while Comparoni was done-deal bullcrapping for example. I won't bother asking about Rico Beard.

I don’t understand why in any circumstance State would hire a search firm, yet alone a year prior to the time set for retirement. The position is hardly obscure, nor are the potential candidates. I would be surprised if that’s true.
