Source says Ross will try to hire Harbaugh if Dolphins miss the playoffs

Submitted by Raskolnikov on

Sam Webb said something similar yesterday.

Edit; Now Balas is saying it. This can't be dismissed as typical NFL naysaying. If we dismiss Rapoport as a hack when he says Harbaugh turned us down, we should also question the legitimacy of his "Ross wants Harbaugh at Michigan" tidbit. It's not good news but for Christ's sake people, be objective.

Don't mean to cross post but the last comment on the betting odds thread directly relates to this scrap of news. Here we go with the NFL rumored sources again. It's like a weekly geyser of NFL biased information that contradicts our daily drip drip of maize colored rumors we get during the week. One of three possibilities with this Ross rumor: 1) Ross was all about Harbaugh to Michigsn when he thought Miami coaching search was less likely and now has a change of heart. Or 2) He has wind of the fact that Harbaught won't go to Michigan, and figures that if an NFL team is going to get him anyway it may as well be Miami. OR 3) This is another goofball NFL rumor and nobody knows what's going on because this a CC fergodsakes.

The guy writing that column doesn't even acknowledge the Harbaugh-to-Michigan possibility, so this is a superficial look at the situation. I don't know if we 'll wind up with Harbaugh (obviously hoping we do), but him taking a job at Michigan is a very, very real possibility, and for this guy to not even acknowledge the possibility labels him an NFL synchophant. FWIW, I think being a college coach is way, way more meaningful...

1. Harbaugh is a highly wanted coach in the NFL at this time. If he accepts a trade to a losing team Raiders, Jets, Bears or any other. If they continue to have losing seasons down the road because of giving up draft picks that they need. Will Harbaugh retain the high level of everyone wants him as a coach. It could hurt him to go to a losing team that by giving up their draft picks will continue to be a losing team for a long time to come and not because of his coaching, but because of what the NFL team is giving up in draft picks to get him.

2. With the exception of the Raiders, all of the other teams would require a "Move" from California.

3. Harbaugh does love Michigan, returning to Michigan to lead them back to relevance in Football is very appealing. National Championships down the road and he has never won a National Championship in the college ranks. If he doesn't retire at Michigan he will always have the option for future NFL Coaching Positions and probably the team of his choice at that time and one that won't be giving up their draft picks to get him.

4. HARBAUGH, I just cannot see the benefit of him accepting a trade with a losing NFL team giving up draft picks at this time.

5. HARBAUGH, I do see benefits of him accepting the Michigan Coaching Position. I don't see by doing this where he has alot to lose. The NFL is still there in the future and he has the opportunity to Coach his Alma Mater back to relevance, win a National Championship Ring and return to the NFL at some time in the future if this is what he really wants to do.

If you are wondering if I am trying to come up with reasons for Harbaugh to return to Michigan, the answer is "Yes" as many as I possibly can.

Harbaugh! Harbaugh! Harbaugh! The Team, The Team, The Team.

Go Blue!

If this whole "come home jimmy" thing fails, Michigan will be up a creek. They will have to throw dollars at a second or third tier coach and the fan base will go insane. Fun times!

Harbaugh is an obvious choice for the position and likely the obvious 1st choice. You are right. There are other qualified people to coach at Michigan.

However, given the team's record since 2008, with the exception of the 2011 season, the pressure is on to make the right hire. While part of the deliberative nature of the search may just be waiting out JH and the 49ers season, I think part also is the recognition that there is a need to make the right choice to get someone in who can right the ship quickly.

People are obsessing over him because he is the # 1 choice. Someone who brought back USD, Stanford, and the 49ers. Why wouldn't people obsess over him? You talked about how we offered Bo when he wasn't the best candidate out there hence the Bo Who article and it worked out. I'm saying that this isn't a very good way to go about this search as we tried that last coaching search and an underwhelming candidate turned out to be an underwhelming coach. This is why Herman is a bad idea with never being a head coach and Schaino is a bad idea with his Hokian 68-67 Rutgers record. If we had gone out and hired a rockstar in 2011 we wouldn't be in this position today. With every failed hire, we are further removed from the rest of the blue bloods. That is why we must get Harbaugh, Stoops, Mullen, or Patterson.

Well, Michigan probably isn't going to pry Stoops or Patterson away from their schools, and I know some people love Mullen but I'm not sure he is a massive upgrade long-term, unless we are absolutely ignoring the many 4- and 5-loss seasons with nary a major victory and only looking at 2014.

Harbaugh is the top selection for all the reasons people have said, but Michigan will absolutely survive if they don't get him.  And this isn't basketball when it comes to blue bloods; ND is scuttling, PSU is just now leaving their crater,Texas and OU have underwhelmed in recently years, and lots of the top teams in the country weren't that way 10-15 years ago.  Sure, you've got Alabama and OSU plugging along, but I'm not sure Michigan could ever be like them without major culture changes.  The game is changing, and some of the best coaches are guys you never would have heard of years ago.  Michigan needs to hire a good coach, but I don't care if that guy is "proven" or not.  If he's good enough, that will show.

Harbaugh is not interested in us. He wants to stay in the NFL. To many outlets are saying he has told Michigan to look elsewhere. Now the firm is hired, now other names are surfacing, now Ross is interested in Harbaugh again. Face it he's not coming

Since Tom was at Michigan I have never rooted against him. Makes this realy hard.

The article does say that Michigan is an obstacle to overcome. I think I will just leave that game alone and instead.

Lions Win

I also have a hardtime rooting agains Harbaugh, so instead of rooting against him I will root for the Lions to win, they are ahead of San Franciso for the playoffs. I am trying to find a way to get where we want to be without rooting against any of the xWolverines, last week I will admit I didn't root against Jim Harbaugh. I was rooting for Charles Woodson.

I know, same thing. Justifying.
