Some more info on Michigan's new font
An eagle-eyed user on Twitter pointed this out to me this morning.
On the Michigan Athletics twitter page, they have been releasing a graphic every day counting down to the Nike launch.
In those graphics, they have been using the font we have seen on the new gear that's been released. Have a look-
I gathered together the new jersey number font and put it together.
Not only has the #2 changed drastically, but the #4 has severely changed along with the #5 that has been slightly altered.
Old
/Complains about Adidas uniforms and proclaims Nike the savior of humanity.
/Trashes Nike uniforms before they are even released.
Thank you
Light your torches!!
Release the Hounds to pursue the 'Jumpman' !!!
WE MUST BURN NIKE TO THE GROUND FOR THIS SACRILEGIOUS ACT!!!
I really don't care about fonts but do agree that the 4 and 5 both look swollen compared to the rest of the set and that #4 is just stupid. You're trying too hard Nike
I think the history is with the number itself and not so much the font. I know some people are upset about it, but I kind of like the new #2. I think it looks sleek and a little modern. That said, the 4 is terrible and I'm not so sure how sleek the 2 will look next to the fattened 5 or 8.
#4 is hideous, as everyone has said. The #5 isn't any better... I can deal with the #2, but 4 and 5 are awful.
When I first found out the news we were that were switching back over to Nike I was estatic! But then shorty there after I heard about the Jumpman news and I was devestated. What is the point? We don't need help with recruiting, we're fucking Michigan! It just enrages me that the font that this honored, established program has been wearing for 137 years is going to change to the number font Jordan played with, no correlation whatsoever. But since Harbaugh wants it most of you just love the idea, just like you would love anything the man fucking does. At the end of the day, any person with common sense beleives a Jumpman logo does not belong on any Football Uniform, nevertheless a Michigan uniform.
you really need to stop freaking out now. Stop. These are MINOR changes to the font of football numbers. When did the numbers become one of the most sacred tradition of michigan football. You sound absolutely ridiculous.
At the end of the day, the jerseys that look the best are the ones worn by the winning team. Teams like M, USC, OU, bama, and ND wouldn't be considered to have some of the best uniforms if they didn't have a rich tradition of WINNING.
If we go on and beat sparty, OSU, and maybe win the big ten championship this year, the jumpman will become an icon of Michigan football. It will be feared. Ask anybody on the board what their favorite version of the Michigan uniform is. Most will say the one Woodson wore in '97 or the '06 edition. The two best years for Michigan the last 21 years.
So chill out. Just win. and for the love of god, stop being a whiny little bitch.
I can't believe we didn't have a number zero until now!
This font thing is fucking stupid...we got the point the several other threads that you mentioned the font. It is happening, so get over it.

I closed my eyes and said it in Jon Falk's voice.

Why is change inevitable?
in the athletic department is trolling WD by putting weird number fonts on these.

I am not a fan of the word branding, but the reality is that Michigan football is a worldwide brand with huge value.
It takes a long time to establish brand identity, and Michigan's is very wrapped up in an iconic and very traditional uniform. Just letting incremental changes creep in very couple of years erodes something of huge value that took decades to build.
So normally I would agree that these small font changes are not a big deal. But when the branding is so wrapped up in tradition and an iconic uniform, it becomes a big deal.
...Michigan adopted the font that Oregon uses the value of the Michigan brand would not be diminished?
How about the font that Alabama uses for the word 'Gators'? Use that for Michigan, right?
UCLA's helmet script? Also good for Michigan?
How about the font Nebraska uses fo the 'N' on their helmets?
As long as there is some sort of dark blue and some sort of yellow, the font does not matter, right?
And if UCLA, Nebraska, Florida, Nebraska, and adopt Michigan's font for their helmet, no difference, right?
How about the old English font of the Detroit Tigers? Or the font used by the NY Giants? Of the font used by the SD Padres? Miami Marlins font good too? NY Yankees font works also?
WD needs to hire a brand management consultant.
Get a grip losers.

I'm okay with these new numbers.
Is this a joke thread? No seriously, there aren't actually people who care this much about what font the numbers on a football uniform are, are there? *sigh* Why? What possible difference could it make?

It is off-season. August camp does not start untill...August. There is little else to talk about.
But mostly, I am 100% certain that everyone on this board cares most about winning.
But guess what? This happens to be the only piece of Michigan football realted news flaoting around on a late July day. So it seems perfectly fine for people to opine on what the uniform will look like at the unveil next week.
The more the merrier. Great minds think alike.
We care because we care about Michigan football. And the appearance of the team is part of what we are invested in.
I have followed Michigan football since I was a little boy. I used to draw football players with crayons and try to make the helmet wings look right. I remember, clearly, the awe of walking into the stadium from the tunnel, and the awe of seeing the team run out under that banner in person, and seeing the whole team bunch together jumping up and down with all of those winged helmets close in.
It was amazing.
The images are burned into our minds. They are a part of the experience. They are a part of what Michigan is to us. Images of Charles Woodson rising into the air, intercepting a Ryan Leaf pass in the endzone, his #2 a focus on the screen. Desmond Howard in Heisman pose, #21 forever. Jim Harbaugh, #4, a certain crisp and attractive #4. A certain color of blue. A certain color of maize. Different from Michigan State's hodgepodge of greens and number fonts and uniform designs. Different from Notre Dame's separate traditions. Different from Ohio State's loud scarlet. There is an appearance that is fundamentally part of the Michigan experience.
Do I care more than results? Don't be absurd. I paid what is for me a not-trivial sum to take my two daughters to Michigan-Minnesota last fall, the second Michigan game for one and first for the other. The color of maize was wrong to me. It wasn't the home games I remember. But when Glasgow and Henry stoned Mitch Leidner at the goal line on the last play, was I worried about that? Of course not. I was jumping in the air and shouting for all I was worth.
If all that mattered were results, we could be satisfied with an ESPN final score notice on our smartphone.
But Michigan Football is a lot more than results. It's an experience. And the uniforms are a part of it.
did a lot of drawing of Michigan football helmets as a little kid.
Who are the ad wizards that came up with this crap? Seriously, there are people who are paid to sit around and think about ways to change the greatest uniform in all of sports. Just stop it already. The world does not need any more innovation in pizza, vodka, or Michigan football jerseys. All three were perfected long, long, ago.
2,4, and 5 all look worse. 4 looks very odd. 2 is ok, but now doesn't match Woodson.
There was absolutely no need to change the fonts. This is change for the sake of change. Poor choice by Nike and Michigan AD if this is the actual font.
