SIAP: PSU AD bemoans lies to recruits

Submitted by steeltownblue on

Thought this might be of interest to the board.   The PSU AD director is complaining that B1G universities are using the latest information about the Sandusky scandal in recruiting.  Claims there's no basis for re-opening penalties against PSU and that officials regard the matter as settled.

He's blaming some school that isn't Michigan, Ohio State, MSU or Notre Dame:

"All I said was that every kid that we're recruiting is also being recruited by Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and Notre Dame and that they don't have the same challenges that we have now,"Franklin told Feldman. "Then, in a separate quote, I mentioned that right now we're (dealing) with negative recruiting. It was two separate quotes, though, over a 35-minute interview."

"I never said that any of those schools are the ones doing the negative recruiting against us. They're not. There is one other particular school, but I didn't name who that was."

My guess is it is Pitt or at least they'll try to blame Pitt.

BTW...Fuck Penn State and their child sexual abuse enabler apologists.

He flat out told the Reading Eagle it was Dantonio and Urban.  The guy who asked the question at BTN media days is personal friends with the Reading Eagle reporter who originally ran a column about the negative recruiting.  When the reporter who asked the question was confronted by the PSU SID denying it he immediately called over the Readin Eagle reporter who said, "No, that's exactly what he said.  I send you (SID) the story 10 days ago and you never commented"

The reporter who asked about it was on Sirius yesterday afternoon.

are just managing expectations.  There isn't an interview they do without moaning about the sanctions and now they are moaning about negative recruiting.

They are worried about going 7-6 again with a bowl loss.

Some delusional PSU fans over on PennLive.com were hoping it was Harbaugh or his staff doing the negative recruiting as they hate Harbaugh (reality is they would love Harbaugh if he was their coach).

I find their desire for this to have been Harbaugh doing the negative recruiting especially disgusting as it was Franklin who obliquely called Harbaugh creepy and Dwumfour got an earful of negative recruiting about Harbaugh when he did his last official visit to Penn State.

The tirefire has gone out on it's own with no help from anyone at PSU.  However, just like the Centralia Mine Fire this may smolder forever as facts and stories continue to come out in dribs and drabs.

Next problem for PSU will be hiring a new coach.  I don't think there is any A-list coach that would want to take on the burden of that program for quite some time.  So, do they keep an underperforming overhyping car salesman-coach or get someone who is squeaky clean but only has an max upside of 8-9 win seasons?

I think BOB was the right coach for them but he had higher aspirations.

O'Brien was a great hire for them.  But it wasn't hard to imagine him jetting off to the NFL when the calls eventually came.  Had he stayed, this would no longer be a topic and PSU would be a nationally relevant program again.  Instead, they have reached the apex of life without JoePa - middling performance under a middling coach with a smoldering coal fire under thier feet.

No doubt O'Brien would be going back to the NFL at some point, but I do think he planned to spend at least 4 years, probably a bit longer at Penn St. before looking around.  I mean, why would anybody put themselves through the first couple years of sanctions at a school, only to bolt for the NFL.  He could have taken a job at any number of places where his job would have been easier, if he were just planning on staying a couple of years.  His plans were derailed by the Joebots, that core of former athletes, students, alumni, boosters, and BoR members who think Joe Pa could do no wrong, and any coach who didn't do things just like Joe Pa, was anathema, and needed to be driven out. BOB finally got tired of working in that environment.

Penn state is like my wife's dad. Bastard left my mother in law for another woman when his kids were 8, 5 and 2. Now that they're all grown up he bitches and acts all offended if his kids do anything that he perceives as holding his past against him. IT DIDN'T JUST HAPPEN, F-STICK. YOU DID IT. YOU MADE YOUR CHOICES, NOW LIVE WITH THE CONSEQUENCES.

I agree with the argument that they won't be punished again by the NCAA, but coaches pointing out "oh yeah that school covered up child sexual assault" is just your cross to bear, PSU.

Has anyone said "Fuck Penn State" yet? Someone should really get on that. If we can't have Penn State removed from the conference, hopefully they simply fall to the status of a Purdue.

Is a guy that (allegedly) saw a video of his Vanderbilt players raping an unconscious woman and told them to delete it. Then when testifying he said that he never saw it.

Why does anyone give this mouth breather any doubt with anything. He could tell me that it's sunny outside and I still might bring an umbrella.

About the only thing Franklin could hang his hat on as something positive at Penn State was recruiting, and there have certainly been credible claims about his negative recruiting.Given their schedule, his W-L record is nothing to be proud of.  Now, two years in, the recruiting isn't what it was, probably because the program has to improve to get to mediocre.  The PSU fanbase is getting a bit restless, so he has to find some way to deflect criticism, and he chose to blame it on other programs' negative recruiting.  He knew full well what he was saying when he said it, and even the AD came our with comments in the same vein.  Now that push comes to shove, and other coaches are being asked about his charges, he's backtracking.

Maybe it's time for the PSU faithful to admit their school hired a crappy coach with questionable ethics who talks a good game but can't produce on the field. This is just more of his talk, talk, talk, no action. It seems to have worked for two years on the recruiting trail, but even impressionable high school students are beginning to see through him.

Penn State never faced a negative stigma around their program because of their perceived stability and oasis as a place where JoPa only did things the right way.  They never had recruiting troughs related to coaching changes, probation or other scandal the way every single other NCAA program has faced at some point.  This is new for them and it will take a while for them to adapt.

BoB couldn't hack it. Alexander is the perfect man for the job - let him flounder around for a few years (or a year) - and maybe they'll stumble back into relevance for a year here and there. Otherwise, this stink will take time to air.

OP -- the article doesn't quote the PSU AD as saying that Big Ten teams are doing the negative recruiting.  Per today's UV article on the main page, speculation is that it is primarily Pitt.

They'd better get used to it.

As long as Penn State is perceived by the outside world as a place where Joe Paterno is still idolized and vindicated of all wrong doing, then they deserve the bad rep.

So, in essence, quit whining, Franklin. I know you had nothing to do with what happened, but you knew what you were signing up for when you took that job, so I don't feel bad that you have to deal with it on a daily basis. You know how to get people to shut up? Win games.

Other coaches probably neg recruit Alabama all the time. But the top recruits don't give a shit, because Saban wins. He wins, and he turns you into a first round draft pick.

Almost all of my family and friends that follow college sports are OSU fans. So for the entirety of my football fandom i have either watched the games alone or in the company of Buckeyes. I've always openly rooted for them to lose every single game until the PSU scandal hit. That is the one game a year i become an Ohio State fan as I cheer for them, and every other team PSU plays, to pummel them into the earth.
