searchbits: who should be our next AD?

Submitted by JamesBondHerpesMeds on January 16th, 2023 at 6:58 PM

It seems all too apparent that Warde is not just on thin ice, but may be falling through it as we speak.

Who are some of the top ADs in the country who have both a keen sense of running an athletic department and the chops to navigate the wild world of NIL?

in this case….WWSD (What Would Santa Do)?

Charles Woodson.

Guy would die on a hill for Michigan. He runs his own businesses.

"But he has never run an AD before!". Neither did Jim Hackett.

I’d assume Warde is already on thin ice with the regents based on how he defended and tried to keep Mel Pearson. From the sounds of things, he’s not making a good first impression on his new boss either.

Some of you really don't understand negotiations and process. It's presumptuous to think that Warde is on the outs here. . . Why? Harbaugh bought in an agent this year. He bought in his representative. Warde bought in Ono. And, looks like the good cop to Warde's bad cop. So, long as the deal gets done, there isn't anything to to warrant Warde's dismissal. 3rd place in the Directors Cup and an Athletic Department that arguably had its best season collectively in our lifetime. Financial security and rebound over Covid. I'm not sure where all this viotrol against Warde is coming from . . . but, it should really stop.

Understanding negotiations may be a fair point. However, his history of letting great coaches walk (Bakich, Beilein, Hutchins) instead of embracing that solid athletic programs are the front door to your institution is as large a failure you can have as an AD in this new era. Refusing to provide upgrades, resources or NIL because “this is Michigan” is obtuse and antiquated thinking. Lots to like about him but his refusal to evolve will be his undoing at Michigan.

Me speculating on AD hires is about as unqualified as it gets. The only guy that comes to mind, Mike Bohn, was hired by USC in 2019. He hired Fickell and seemed to raise the sports profile of that school without a population tailwind like UCF. He then hired Lincoln Riley for USC.

Maybe somebody younger who can get the kids their NFTs?

Warde has seemed to foul some things up but let’s not forget he is a Michigan man. We may disagree with the way he’s run the AD but let’s not trash him if he’s out the door. Let’s put our support and focus on the teams we love and trust Santa will get this fixed. He seems like a superstar.

The first real answer here. I think you have to see if Danny White would move on from Tennessee too. Michigan needs to be at the top with NIL, and although they say things happen behind the scenes, it doesn't seem like we are. The coach and AD need to see eye to eye and it's obvious they don't. I'm sure there's more to the JH contract than what we see, but this should not be happening every single year. I think there are also going to be some tough decisions that come soon, especially with Juwan Howard. I also think Michigan relies too much on the brand of Michigan to outweigh its faults, especially in the nil/recruiting landscape. It's worked in the past, but it's not going to work forever.

come on, you loonies. y’all are so completely convinced that manuel stinks, you must have someone in mind.

so, come on - name one athletic director that’s out there doing a great job.

just one.  name them.

please note that  i didn't ask if there's a possible replacement out there that could be found by a headhunter. of course a viable candidate could be found.

what i'm asking is who is out there actually doing what you'd consider a demonstrably good job.  the above commenter mentions swarbrick, who i think is probably a good example.  mike bohm's name has gotten thrown around based on his hiring of lincoln riley and luke fickell, which were undeniably good decisions.  on the other hand, he also failed to hire anyone of real note in eight years at colorado.  yeah, he hired luke fickell at cincinnati, but also failed to retain mick cronin and left clay helton hanging for an egregiously long time at usc

my point, and i do have one, is that warde's missteps are, in my opinion, probably overstated and not unusual to the very position.  the man widely considered to be the creator of the notion of a modern athletic department (don canham, obvs) also made some truly egregious errors in his time...

If I had pick a replacement I would say  Danny white. What he did at buffalo, UCF and now Tennessee,  pretty impressive. Nate oats ,Lance leipold , and hired Josh Heupel from UCF to Join Tennessee during that mess. Probably not a popular name on here but he was at UCF when he hired Scott frost.. He's got a really good coaching tree under him..

Warde pretty much had to keep thingd goimg and have an amazing tenure as an AD. He has Howard, Harbaugh, and Arico. He could made a play to keep Bakich. Just keeping them and being competituve in NIL sets us up nicely for awhile but he has handled every adversity terribly.

Unrelated but i wonder how much it costs to buy  womens basketball national championship? We are pretty alreafy but would never be able to compete with someene like south carolina. I would think the women still dint make much. I would think even only 100k would buy you a top class
