Scouting Report: Chris Williamson

Submitted by Magnus on

I wrote up a scouting report on Gainesville (GA) Gainesville cornerback Chris Williamson, who will be taking an official visit to Michigan this weekend. As far as pure athleticism goes, I think Williamson is perhaps the most exciting player Harbaugh has started recruiting, except for maybe Roquan Smith. Both these guys are potential game-changers, but Williamson could play several positions (CB, WR, S, PR, KR), whereas Smith is more limited (LB, maybe RB). I don't think Williamson would be a real game-breaker as a returner, but he would be a very solid corner whose basement might be James Rogers.

This guys looks pretty good on film. Could be a great pick up. As far as him not being a real game-breaking return man, we have one Jabrill Peppers for that.

Nice write up M. I like him too.  If we can get him and Arnette with 3 real weeks to recruit them I'd be tickled.  He is getting a lot of attention down south however so will be a tough one to pull.

So you're saying the floor for him is "I have no earthly clue if this player is kinda good or okay or just the worst damn corner in the history of the forward pass"?

Nah, I like James Rogers. I don't think he was nearly as bad as some people think around here, and if he had stayed at one position instead of bouncing back and forth between WR and CB repeatedly, he could have been better. Off the top of my head, he had 3 picks at corner in 2008 and he averaged over 18 yards/catch at wideout for his career. For comparison's sake, J.T. Floyd - who some people thought was good for some reason - had 3 picks in his career, which included three full seasons of starting. Then he smoked weed and got himself suspended for the bowl game, hanging his team out to dry in a close loss.

I always thought any love directed toward Floyd was because he went from terrible to competent, and that felt like a win for a fanbase that had seen some terrible defenses under RR.

I agree Rogers was fine; as a floor that isn't bad for a late-addition recruit.

Neg for the JT Floyd hate.

Just cuz a guy is overrated on Mgoblog doesn't make him a bad player.

INTs aren't a good measure of CB play, even if they're the only one available.

Rogers could have been a decent contributor in a Courtney Morgan sort of way, but he was still a below average Big 10 starter.  He was just unfortunate enough to be the best CB on that team instead of a marginal contributor.

I was always frustrated by people touting Floyd, but the thing about him that leaves a sour taste in my mouth is that he got himself suspended. That has nothing to do with his play on the field. He let the team down with his behavior. It's the same reason I'm not a big fan of Hagerup and others. I can almost understand a 19-year-old freshman or sophomore making a bonehead decision, but a fifth-year senior with a child who smokes weed and lets down 114 other guys, the staff, the fans, and the program when he gets caught really annoys me.

Really excited about his potential. I wonder about his immediate impact at FS with his great ball skills and range, but the same skills are lacking in the WR group. Regardless, I would expect him to see some playing time almost immediately.

Williamson is definitely a "want very much" sort of player.  I love his size for the CB position, solid speed, and versatility.  Hopefully, he has an excellent visit and we'll see from there.

..begin at WR but could move to DB ala Richard Sherman at Stanford. Harbaugh doesn't pigeon-hole guys by position and puts athletes in positions to make plays, such as Owen Maceric at Stanford who played 2 ways! Williamson may come in and move around and I'd like to see Peppers and even Dymonte Thomas get some touches.

No more Mike Cox repeats where a great athlete never sees the field. (aside from misconduct, etc)

100% agree.  coaches who fail to coach in this manner are really doing their teams disservice.  since when is versatility bad?  love harbaughs willingness to adapt.

unlike adaptable coach harbaugh, stubborn coaches like hoke continually trot out williams and numerous TEs who cannot block or receive - use ben gedeon or even ferns, im sure jake ryan wouldve taken some snaps at TE if asked to help the team.

thankfully good players no longer must suffer fools
