If only because college football is so provincial in nature do we fail to realize what kind of hell it must be to write about college football from a national perspective, since you will inevitably denigrate one fan base or another. Brian's thesis is certainly open to debate, but I think the Alabama fans have decided that he's evil and perhaps an Auburn sympathizer. Wow, just wow.

Lots of haterade in that comment board. One meme I expected Brian to promote -- that Saban played Tressel-ball, but I guess it's OK when it's done by the SEC but not OK when done by the Big 10. McElroy = Krenzel, Ingram = Clarett, great D, etc.

I've been wholly unimpressed by the comment sections at TSB, but then again I'm spoiled by the quality of the MGoCommunity. I can understand why Alabama fans might take issue with the proclamation that Alabama's championship came in a down year, but most people seem to agree that this year was largely uninspiring. At no point did I watch Alabama, Florida, Texas, USC, Oregon, OSU, etc. and believe that any of those teams were heads-and-tails better than the other, nor did I think for a second that any of them could have competed with Florida or Oklahoma from last year. Probably the most compelling story of the year was the number of relatively high-profile coaches fired for disciplinary reasons and the fights both on and off the field (looking at you, Oregon/Boise and MSU). Sometimes you have years like this, and you figure it is a blip in the landscape. This article was less to do with attacking the champion of college football than it was to point out it was a meh season.

When Oregon beat USC, I for one thought they were better than the rest. Then came Stanford. This season could have benefited from a playoff better than most. That is the story IMO. There are many teams that could have come out on top in that scenario. Gerhart deserved a shout out as well - Brian. He had a great season and now looks like an NFLer. Uh...UM...the first 4 games were pretty sweet as well. Let's not dive Tate over the top against Indiana next Fall.

I agree, but even when Oregon won I thought it showed how mediocre USC was, not necessarily how good Oregon was going to be moving forward. To be fair, the only teams that really impressed me this year were Boise St. and Alabama, and neither to a great degree. I guess it was just a down year, and hopefully an uptick occurs next year (especially in A2).

If you are an Alabama fan, this was one of the best years in the history of college football. If you are neutral or align with any of the other 200+ schools, then you will probably, as I certainly do, agree with Brian. After McCoy got hurt, the game was obviously over. I didn't even watch the entire game, channel-surfing between the game and other insipid entertainment. The fifteen minutes or so that I subsequently watched was a tease. The graphics said "National Championship Game," but it wasn't a game and I don't think the current system determines a champion. So, really, the game and the season as a whole failed to deliver on all counts.

that at least 2 posters were turned off by the phrase "Love me some Dr.Z". They didn't go into any other detail. Just the fact that that phrase told them everything they needed to know about Brian and the piece.

The sad thing is that Brian was not accused of anything beyond the normal in Alabama if you don't do any of the following: 1. Acknowledge that the SEC always has the best teams. Hell, make the MNC game the Dr. Pepper SEC championship game. That's the only one that matters. 2. Acknowledge that the SEC has the twelve best coaches in the country. 3. Admit that there are no pretty women outside of the SEC. 4. Understand that Paul Finebaum is unbiased. (Local joke.) 5. Bear Bryant is God. And Nick Saban is his son. I could give you more, but you would probably get sick.

I kind of admire the tunnel vision of the stereotypical Alabama/SEC fan for being 100% behind their team. If Michigan has some sort of all-the-right-breaks-at-all-the-right-times miracle season next year, the RR haters would still consider a BCS championship as some sort of lame "excuse" or "rationalization" for not firing him.
