Ron English? Why not Hermann or Mallory?

Submitted by readyourguard on

I've heard Ron English's name pop up as a possible replacement for GERG or <gasp> RR.  Why?  What have people seen in English that would suggest he's a qualified replacement or that he'd have a high probablity to succeed?

If we're going to reach back to someone who served us well in the past, why not a Jim Hermann?  or a Mike Mallory?

My guess is that RR doesn't want to have bring in someone with direct ties to Bo, if for no other reason than it potentially creates even more tension amongst the staff, adminsitration, and fanbase.  But why Ron English?

You see here's the thing, I read alot of military history and in particular naval history.  When a ship runs aground and the captain is sleeping in his bunk, it doesn't matter because he's gonna get the blame as well.  If they fire Greg at the end of the season, this will make the third defensive coordinator under Rich Rod and at some point it goes back to him which is why I said what I said.

That's the big problem. Somehow there really isn't anybody in the Lloyd coaching tree who seems fit to be the head coach at Michigan right now.

It's baffling and makes me want to curl up in the corner and suck my thumb, because it means there is no easy solution in sight.

Anything you "hear" about replacements are about as credible as me and Lloyd Brady sharing a bottle of Cristal at the TT bar in Windsor. Unless you heard this right from the mouth of RR, I think any talk about replacements is just crazy talk.

I don't want to replace our head coach.

I want our head coach to replace the entire defensive staff.  I've heard RE's name today on this board and elsewhere.  I have the same response as you......"wtf?  are you nuts?"

Could you be referring to the 2006 D with future NFL all pros, Woodley, Harris, and Hall, and a host of others still playing in the NFL that gave up how many points to OSU?  Seems like most of those players must have been upperclassman, as well, as they have all been in the league for a while.

This is what I want as well and think is the best solution.  I think Rod and DB should sit down after the season and hire the best available D coordinator out there that is willing to come to Michigan.  That coord should be able to hire his own staff, no questions.  Getting rid of Gerg and keeping the others would be another huge mistake and I would rather keep Gerg than this happen.  My question is, would Rod allow this to happen?  Not that he would really have a choice really, but I would wonder if he would be willing to go along with this plan.

I know they are freshman, but last night was the tipping point for me.  Not that I get a vote, I guess.  I am tired of seeing poor tackling, poor angles, and UM's D making average teams and players look like all americans.

neither GERG nor Schaffer were allowed to hire their own staffs.  both were given a set of coaches to work with, and there has only been one change, besides DC, that has been made on that side of the ball.

My comfort in this situation is the one and only David Brandon. He's not an idiot, and he's not going to be swayed by emotion. He'll do what he believes is best for the program, and I trust his opinion more than anyone else's at this point.

You and me both.  I am hanging ALL my hope on Brandon at this point.  And I'm also girding my loins for the possibility that he will make a decision I don't agree with and what a test of my faith in him that will represent.  FWIW - Don makes an excellent point on Brandon and what is likely to happen in the "Perception vs Reality" post.

Yeah. I hate uncertainty. All I want right now is stability. I think that Rodriguez is an exceptional offensive coach and I want him to stay, but it's becoming clear that even if he can somehow turn the program around that there has been enough pain inflicted on the fanbase that they might never let him live it down.

I would kill for that situation. I think it will happen the day Boren becomes skinny and GERG's hairline recedes, but man would that be awesome. If Brandon worked that out somehow he would have to be pushing the boundaries on pimp-hand strength.

Why would RR really want to do that? That would be a huge blow to his ego. I don't think any one of us would do that if we were in his shoes. He would tell Michigan to take a hike b/c other schools would want him as head coach. Schools that have more patience and a rational fan base.

What schools might that be that are BCS auto qualifiers?  Honestly I think none.

If RR is let go, I think he winds up an OC at a BCS autoqualifing school or HC at a non-auto or a conference like the BE or ACC.  I don't think he gets the keys to a shiny new car right out of the gate.

I'm not campaigning for RR anymore, but I'm also not campaigning for his termination.  Ambivilence or Apathy best describes my thoughts on RR's future now.  I have COMPLETE FAITH that Mr Brandon gets this right.  I suspect that his experiences in the real world included situations far more complicated than this, we just didn't know or care about them.

From the Big 12- Colorado, Texas A&M

From the Pac 10- UCLA

I would even think that Minnesota would like to have RR.

Sure he prefers a 3-3-5, but he may decide to try a new approach.

I'm sure other schools realize the crap RR has had to deal with here.

I totally believe that Ron English is being seriously considered for the DC job next year.

And I also totally believe that the widow of the Crown Prince of Nigeria has 28MM (US) dollars trapped in her offshore banking account and if I provide to her my credit card number she will transfer the funds to me and split the balance.

What gives with all the hypocrisy from the GERG-hating RR defenders?  This year's biggest excuse for RR follows (roughly) along the lines of "no coach could do a better job with that young, inexperienced secondary".  If you're one to buy that excuse, there is no way you can call for GERG to be fired.  If the excuse is fair for RR, how is it not fair for GERG as well?  The head coach (who recruited the players) isn't responsible for the young defense, but the DC is???

I'm not defending GERG or RR, but I am defending logic and consistency.  If one is saved by that excuse, both should be.

(Take this FWIW, which is not much.)

I think these arguments become emotional very quickly. The offense is good, pushing great, and the defense is terrible. Since people associate RR with his schemes on offense, and rightly so, they don't see him as responsible for the D even though he should be held accountable.

At the same time, a coach cannot put that much emphasis on the offense and still have time to sort out all of the D's problems.

People give RR the benefit of the doubt based on youth because he's not the primary one who has taken on the task of developing that youth. That is GERG's main focus.

We're paying Rodriguez to coach the team, and half of the team is functioning at a level capable of contending in the B10. We're paying GERG to coach the defense, and that's the part that's falling apart. At least we're getting something out of the money we're spending on RR.

I'm of the opinion that if we give RR and GERG another year we'll see great improvement on D, a la the offense the last couple of years. However, if we're going to get rid of someone, I'd rather have it be GERG and avoid losing all of the progress RR has made.

Now I'm rambling. I hate trying to justify my frustration with my hope for the future. I love this team, and I just want what's best for them.

Let's give the Illinois DC a call.  He turned around a unit that was statistically worse than us last year.  And what's a better job, Illinois or Michigan?

I know it sounds crazy, but Moeller made his bones as Bo's defensive coordinator.  He is certainly not a candidate for head coach so Rodriguez wouldn't be looking over his shoulder.  He's old, but not that old.  He is a fiery guy...and half of playing good defense is not just being in position to make plays but to have an attitude about playing defense.  GERG's defensive players seem paralyzed by inaction because they are so afraid of making mistakes,  I can pretty much guarantee that Moeller's defenses wouldn't be the worst in college football !

Ron English's FIRST season at Eastern Michigan University he already had to bust out the "One of the very few black coaches" excuse to keep his job, and he has been riding that train as hard and as long as he can.

If English is 30 seconds away from getting fired at EMU, why the heck do we think he would have what it takes to turn Michigan's defense around?

I cringed at the mention of Jim Herrmann. Does anyone really miss not adjusting to the offenses until half way through the third quarter. I respectfully hope to never hear his name and Michigan coach uttered in the same sentence again.
