Rivals: Gary Patterson not interested in The Job

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

Saw this tweet from a guy who works for the Michigan rivals website. It's on their premium board.

Wonder who it could be?

edit: welp

One coach on our hot board has said 'no' to U-M. Plus the latest on Jim Harbaugh ($): https://t.co/CW5UABJAes #JimHarbaugh #MichiganFootball

and as much as I'd truly like to believe Hackett (OT: but the stock pic of Hackett that is used in the front page makes him look like the golbin king from The Hobbit...anyway) came to a decision Sunday night, I don't buy it. His presser and handling of this situation was about as good as can be done. That said, I have to think general soft feelers were sent out relatively soon after he took over. In the last few days he's had to have given the ok to give tentative offers to then be ok'd or strung along by Hackett based on desire. FINALLY, as unlikely as either Harbaugh is I think both would listen. However, you have to consider how they'd feel taking over for a close friend after his failure. Any chance with Jim (as I think John simply wouldn't supplant Hoke, even if unemployed) has to be handled carefully. Timing is huge. He will go down swinging for the playoffs so publicly distracting him now would be an insult. You have to talk/offer behind the closed doors that are behind the scenes. Yet, you have to have a timeline for an answer before the New Year, IMO. He makes the playoffs and the slim chances go to zero merely by time. Another thing (and this is where I think Hackett may have truly tipped his hand in regard to MUST GET HARBAUGH), I don't think we're looking to hire JUST a spread or pro-style guy. We can't afford to do another roster turnover to suit one system. It has to be flexible so that could rule out some names tossed about. Either way, the way he smiled as he avoided talking about the NFL (while talking about the NFL lol) but saying things like "bowl game, etc" in terms of waiting is telling. He did this a few times, btw. So, in relation to having already been turned down, it could be anyone from either Harbaugh, Miles, Mullen, Jones, Vince Lombardi's ghost, etc. I think the important thing is knowing (with best guess) what Hackett wants in a coach and that "offers" may already be given. Yet, an offer can just be a feeler for the market. Offering Bill Belichick isn't really an offer, etc. I think candidates will really come into focus in a week. Now that Hoke is gone, anyone named Harbaugh is getting asked about the job in every presser. All it takes is one "not interested" to remove them. Same for Miles & others. Today is the start of the race now that it's official. Candidates will fall and emerge rather quickly, IMO. Yet, an offer at this point isn't necessarily binding as much as a feeler so a "no" doesn't mean much if it's someone we'd never get ourr want anyway.

I have two points for "Danwhillor."

1.  Please use white space.  Your opinions are interesting and seem well-thought, but hard to read because of the lack of white space.

2.  I am just naive enough to think that Brady Hoke cares so much about the University of Michigan that he would tell either Harbaugh to take the job and not stand in their way.  IMO, the issue with either Harbaugh is not going to be friendship with or loyalty to Brady Hoke, but the time frame for the NFL season.  Due to the unpredictablity of the NFL, both the Ravens and 49ers can still make the playoffs.

Unfortunately, if they wait for either Harbaugh and neither wants the job, Hackett will be left with someone like Greg Schiano (Please, no) or a "hot assistant" as a "safety net."   Schools with "hot name" coaches are already scrambling to provide raises and extensions for those coaches, no doubt with hefty buyout clauses.

I hope Hackett is good at poker...

I use it exclusively (ok, 99% of the time) and I do apologize as it is ugly with no paragraphs. As for "offers vs gauging interest", the other poster is right on regarding agents. They'll publicly call any inquiry of interest an offer for their client's sake when it's a high profile job.

disagree with anything said here on a level above my opinion/hopes (spacing issues noted on OP and below). I just think both Harbaugh brothers (John WAY more than Jim) would feel awkward being Hoke's replacement. Now, Hoke could give the plea to "in no way feel bad", etc (I think he would) but it just doesn't seem likely John would take it. This comes with a great deal of Harbaugh skepticism as is. Yet, I think other people in the NFL are still in play.

I would also bet there are several agents seeing big pay-days coming for their clients at the moment by ensuring "contact(s)" have been made with their clients by Michigan, Florida and Nebraska with "feelers" that just happen to make it out to the public for consumption without any substance.

I am sure guys like Freeze, Mullen, Patterson, etc in the midst of good years who are going to reap the benefits of nice pay raises and extensions as they were under consideration from multi-year bigger pay days from one of the 3 teams above along with a few NFL openings in some cases.

I think a lot of caveats need to apply to all of the rumors floating around as being just what they are.  I am sure most of these teams have lists of potential candidates with a big pool of names for consideration and priorty status similar to any recruiting boards.

am removing myself from consideration for the Head Coaching position at the University of Michigan.  I have one of the best jobs in the world.  I wish the University good luck in their Coaching search.  I know Jim Hackett will find the best person on this planet in order to bring Michigan back to elite status.  Good luck to all and Go Blue."

/s of course.  But I find it humorous that random Coach XXX has to put out a statement when they were NEVER in consideration. ie Patterson, Jones.  Hackett has not the time nor inclination to counter these, except for mine of course.

Now if this was JH or LM, then I would be worried.

any coach prepping for a bowl game HAS to say "not interested", at least publicly.  These reporters aren't digging up any real information...they are only relaying the standard response right now.  Hackett may already have a VERY interested candidate in discussions right now, but we won't, CAN'T know that until January.  How many times have coaches said they're not going somewhere, only to end up there (Saban, etc.)?

Unless of course he's talking to a non bowl or NFL playoff eligible coach, in which case, GUH.

it's not uncommone for coaches to take a new job before their team plays in the a bowl game, and then an interim coach takes over the bowl game.  Now, the coach isn't going to publicly say anything until he takes the job.  RR left WVU to come to UM between the end of the regular season and WVU's bowl game.  Bill Stewart took over the WVU coaching duties for the bowl game after RR left.

it was Gary Patterson who's off the board, article said nothing about Butch Jones.  You guys need to dial it back a little bit.  They know they have to get it right this time, quit speculating and just wait until they announce who the new coach is.

Just contacted to see if they're interested and then they'll be interviewed. Remember guys, there's a ton of click bait targeted towards michigan fans right now. Be careful.

I'm sure there has been 5 to 10 such calls already at least.

every high level job search works, but most aren't as public as with coaches.  You're right, we can assume that the informal contacts have been made with the top 10-12 candidates with the search firm starting the formal process by officially contacting the candidates that informally said they would listen, haven't been contacted or might be off Hackett's radar.

on Hoke's firing (contrast it with how early we learned Brandon was gone), I would expect the coaching search to play the same way.  So reports like this IMHO should be met with skepticism.

It just can't be, there are too many moving parts in a coaching search. No one outside of Schembechler hall and the search firm Hackett has been talking to needed to know about this news, and even then he could have kept his forays into looking for a coach vague enough that no one would come forward as a strong source.

This is different though, you're going to have to have much more direct conversations with interested parties, and those parties are well outside of Hackett's control at the moment. Harbaugh, Miles, Mullen, every candidate he talks to that would seriously consider the job is going to tell someone. Whether that be Harbaugh or Miles talking it over with family/friends to try to come to a decision or Mullen going to his AD to see if he can't get a contract to match what Michigan is willing to pony up, there will be loose ends that can't be tied off.

tell me about it, I had literally just finished a very well researched post on here debunking the myth of SEC coaching superiority (spoiler alert: Hugh Freeze is not a more impressive hire in the abstract than Darrell Hazell) when that story broke.
