RichRod getting the band back together in Tucson?

Submitted by winterblue75 on

Arizona: We hear Pitt's tight ends / recruiting coordinator Tony Dews, co-offensive coordinator / running backs coach Calvin Magee and secondary coach Tony Gibson are all locked in to join Rich Rod in Arizona. All three with with Rich at Michigan.

Arizona: We hear a number of assistants will join the staff this week and will begin to assemble in Tucson. We have been told to look for Jeff Casteel to be one of the first announced.

EDIT: Magee, Dews, and Gibson photos and bios have been removed from Pitt football website

The sincerely, Cpt. Ass-Has gets me every time. Unreal.

I can't believe he's bring Gibson back. Seemed our secondary was a major issue during the RR times. Maybe Casteel who actually knows the 3-3-5 will assemble a great D like WVU had at times (I believe they were top 10 in 07).  I think Magee has an interesting choice. Seems the Pac-10 (12?) is a much better conference and can get more respect by having a good O but it also seems like RR has gotten most of the praise for that great O. Whatever the case, I really am rooting for them.

I agree that Casteel will have Arizona playing better Defense than Michigan was under RR but I dont think that it will become an elite defense.  At WVU Casteel had top 10 defenses but they were also in the BigEast in which WVU was one of the more talented teams and the competition was lacking.  At Arizona they will never be more talented than USC, and probably wont be as talented as the UW, UCLA, Oregon or Stanford.  Having said that I think Casteel and RR will do relativley well but I dont think they will be having great defenses at Arizona, especially when they have bad assistants like like Gibson.

getting Casteel is huge for RR....that alone should be worst at least one or two wins. Also, as much as Gibby sucked here at Michigan I think Casteel working with him for so many years knows how to work around him and save things.

I hope he gets it right this time because I think he is to good of a coach to be remembered for this 3 yr failure at Michigan.

will bring pressure so Gibson's DB aren't required to cover as long.  It will be interesting as the top 3 QBs at Zona are all Seniors as are their four starting WRs and RB.  They do bring back their entire OL though.  The D played a 4-2-5 and 3/5 of DBs return, but they lose both LBs and both DEs.

Of course, now that I have gotten rid of the twitch I developed at the mere thought of 3rd and long, I tend to be happy for other people that way.

Without a strong DC RR will fail miserably.  He needs someone who can build a defense and defend it when the HC wants to try something else.  I firmly believe RRs failure at Michigan began and ended with Casteel staying at WVU.

You realize, that it was not Casteel's idea?  Jeff Casteel did not invent the 3-3-5, and he is not the one who introduced it to Rodriguez.  Rodriguez saw it, and suggested it to Casteel the way that Rodriguez later suggested it to the DC's at Michigan.  Casteel learned it, from what had been done at Wake Forest (Dean Hood) and South Carolina (Charlie Strong).

One thing influencing both Casteel and Rodriguez at the time, by their own accounts, was that they had a lot of 'tweener athletes at WVU and they felt like the personnel dictated it to some extent.

Good for him. If true that means these guys will move their families for the third time in four years. Thats a pretty good statement about what the people closest to Rich think about him.

and they will be wearing sunglasses when it's dark out.  They will be on a mission...

I hope RR rules the Pac-12 South.  Could you imagine Oregon and Arizona at their best .  Talk about a track meet.

To everyone hating on the RR/Gibson thing...

The Rodriguez family and the Gibson family are very close.  Rita is very close to Mrs. Gibby, Rhett with his son, and Raquel with his teeange daughter.  They have spent years together traveling the nation coaching football together.  And in a time when everything around you is foreign, it's always comforting to have people you know inside and out (no matter how questionable their coaching may be) to ease the transition.

Say what you want, but these decisions are more of family/lifestyle decision than a flat out coaching decision.

And I'd have to say, if many of the "ZOMG GIBBY LOL" people were in the same position, they'd probably make a simliar call.

as a head coach is to build a program and teach young men how to play football and be leaders and succesful in life.  Not hire people so you can have someone for your family to hang out with.

RR may be a heck of an offensive coach with a great offensive system, but he is severely deficient in the areas of what it takes to be a top notch HEAD football coach.
