I know Hoeg Law has worked with mgoblog, so I figured it's worth sharing this.

Richard Hoeg had a stroke, and underwent brain surgery. It sounds like he has begun rehab, but will have a long road to recovery ahead of him.

As a stroke survivor and retired attorney, I wish Richard a steady recovery. Science tells us the quicker a stroke survivor begins intensive rehab of their impaired functions, whether movement, speech, memory, cognition, etc., the more successful the outcomes. Also, as depression is one of the most common conditions among stroke survivors, it is critical they take proactive precautions. These include, among others, sharing feelings with family and friends, avoid isolating by joining stroke survivor groups in person or online, posssibly getting medical advice re low dosage anti-depressants. The key piece of advice: use the impaired function (no matter how frustrating and difficult at first) or it will be lost due to lack of use; it just won’t return automatically after the stroke did its damage.

Any friend of the blog is a friend of mine. Here’s hoping for a full recovery Richard!

Best wishes to a good recovery for him. Adding to what SportsEditor said, hopefully he was immediately admitted to a stroke center for surgery. Only 2% of hospitals have them and a return to functional independence decreases 11% for every hour without treatment.

Get strong and better soon!

Yikes, he is quite young to have had a stroke. Here hoping he didn't have any serious brain injury and they he recovers quickly.

I had a stroke at 42. It can happen at any age. While rehab is a bitch, the younger, the better the results.

I agree. But stating "it can happen" doesn't mean it is common in that age group.

Be F.A.S.T. It could save your loved one's life.
Facial drooping
Arm weakness
Speech difficulties
TIME
Get well soon, Richard. Pulling for you.

One of these 3 findings will occur in 2/3rd+ of major strokes.
(the arm weakness can encompass a lot--not just weakness but difficulty hitting the target (e.g., hitting your nose), or difficulty keeping your hands palm up and steady if you eyes are closed etc)

https://www.cdc.gov/stroke/signs_symptoms.htm
What are the signs of stroke in men and women?
- Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.
- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech.
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
- Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination.
- Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
The stroke treatments that work best are available only if the stroke is recognized and diagnosed within 3 hours of the first symptoms. Stroke patients may not be eligible for these if they don’t arrive at the hospital in time.
If you think someone may be having a stroke, act F.A.S.T. and do the following test:
F—Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
A—Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S—Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?
T—Time: If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.
Note the time when any symptoms first appear. This information helps health care providers determine the best treatment for each person.
Do not drive to the hospital or let someone else drive you. Call 9-1-1 for an ambulance so that medical personnel can begin life-saving treatment on the way to the emergency room.

He’s also really active in the YouTube law nerds community. His wife has been posting updates there and the community has been doing great work to support him and his family through this. Worth checking out if interested.

Our business learned about Hoeg Law via mgoblog. He has done some excellent work for us in addition to being an all around good guy. Saddened to see this news and hope Richard gets well soon.

Went to law school with Rick. Our viewpoints were often 180-degrees apart, but I respected his thoughtful arguments and he's a good guy-- get well soon counselor!

I know Rick. I used to work with him before he went out on his own. He's a really nice guy and much younger than you would think when you here someone had a stroke (although I know there is no age test for strokes). I'm shocked to hear this and certainly wish him the best.

Thank goodness he's in good hands!
