Request for Spring Practice Insights

Just curious if any of the insiders around the board have heard anything about how spring practice has been going so far, particularly in regards to the position battles like QB & LB. Obviously basketball is dominating the focus currently (and deservedly so!) but I was just curious as I remembered spring practices started a few days ago.

*insert fluff and hype about how well each unit looks here*

*insert player making strides and impressing the staff that ultimately won’t play in the fall here*

It’s the same every year.

Very true.  However I'll off this from my own experience going to a coaches clinic and getting to watch the practice and scrimmage you see players standing out.  That said, you see coaches in action.  There were some guys having all american practices I never saw in a game.  Some guys making the same mistakes in games I watched the position coach correct several times in that practice.  Only to see him do it in games and watch fans blame the coach.  Note the back up was far better fundamentally but nowhere near where he needed to be physically so there was a reason the starter remained after every f-up.

The submarine is in full effect, but quite honestly i don't mind.  I'm tired year after year of camp hype.  I just want to see results on the field come September....period!

I don't mind news out of camp. I just take everything with gigantic boulders of salt. Usually you can read between the lines a bit and glean some information, if not much. People who buy the Milton is the next Marino hype before he started a game lack critical thinking skills.

My guess would be that this year, with staff turnover and obvious team disfunction on the field, spring camp is going to be about forging a new team mentality, fundamentals, and evaluating the talent. We have plenty of talent, we just haven't been using it well. (D-line is thin, I know).

I don't think I've seen anything out yet this week, but just a few comments from early enrolees and transfers.  These comments are from the head honcho and they are pretty generic as you'd expect.  I don't know if practices are open or not.  If not, don't expect much.  As you probably know, JH does not give much real information and what he does provide is pretty much worthless in terms of any sort of real analysis of who will be any good next year.

So we do have quite a few mid-year players, new players that have come in. J.J.’s doing extremely well...can say that really — it’s been impressive, the mid-years.

Donovan Edwards doing really well. Junior Colson, Cristian Dixon, Greg Crippen doing a nice job. Tavi Dunlap and Tristan Bounds and Andrel Anthony — Willie Allen’s not a mid-year. Well, he’s come in at the mid-year, but he’s a grad transfer, doing extremely well. And Gio.

The guys are off to a really good start, taking care of business in the classroom. Getting to know college and really just doing a good job of taking  care of their business on and off the field.

OP,

How long have you been following Michigan Football?

If you've been following it for a long time, how many more times do you need to get fooled before you learn your lesson?

Unlike the "no moar hyyype" echo chamber, I like catching little tidbits here and there even if they are just one person's takes. What the fuck else are you supposed to read when you're scrolling your phone while taking a shit?

Everyone put in the work during the offseason.

The strong players are faster, the fast players are stronger.

The team dietician has refined everyone's eating habits, less pizza, more healthier stuff

The four stars are playing like four stars and so are the three stars.

They're competing at every position and in every position group.  Something about the Oklahoma drill.

Leaders are leading and other leaders are emerging.

The offense is being installed and so is the defense, if anyone wants to play both they're learning a lot of the playbook

New coaches are fitting in and coaching their groups up, old coaches are reinvigorated

How is walk-on legacy doing? Would his Dad be proud to see him get snaps this fall?

what about long ago injured blue chip recruit? Is he coming to work hard and taking it day by day?

Are any of the new coaches doctors? If not will it be the medical staff who has to dictate timelines on any injury recovery?

how is the implementation of changes going? The ones decided on after taking a hard look at last season and doing a detailed self scout? I bet we are where you thought or or maybe even a little ahead?

I do not recall any spring practice tidbits that were insightful for the next fall's season. In other words, ignore spring ball for the most part.

Also, with a brand new defensive system (and one that's especially designed for spread) don't expect the public to get much (if any) taste of the scheme.
