Report: Wheatley Out of the Running for WMU Position

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

I'm very glad we'll have him for at least one more season.

Source: Former UM star Tyrone Wheatley appears to be out of the running for the Western Michigan job.

Edit: I updated the title because a poster below said the report was false and the tweet itself hedges.

First, I am very glad to have Tyrone back.  He is a great asset to our program.

Second, he will go soon and when he soes it will be better than WMU.

Was in touch with some coaches at a powerhouse Detroit area private school.  Assured the coaches and the 18/19 kids that he was going to be back next year.  Also, that coach Harbaugh was very helpful and excited for all of his staff when in a position to climb the ranks.

If I'm Wheels and a position coach with NFL experience, I'm interviewing at WMU for two reasons -- to show that I want to be a HC someday and to get the interview experience I think it would have been a jump but now he's out there for future openings down the road.

Anyone else here really love the presence coach W gives on the sideline? I felt like from day one we had the "baddest" coach on that field on any given day. Cool as a cucumber yet ready to kick somebody's ass in a NY second if shit went nuts. Coaching ability foremost but I like having a legit physically intimidating coaching staff as a bonus. WWF style BOOOM!!

I still don't understand why a good coach would want to go to WMU while B1G coordinators are getting big time offers (Cal) and B1G offers (MD, Rutgers) when Fleck killed it to only get Minnesota.

Note, I understand Wheatley is not a coordinator, so maybe for him it makes sense, but certainly not for a guy like Drevno.

Actually Meyer has a pretty good list of OC's that are head coaches

  • Steve Addazio at Boston College (Meyer's OC at Florida)
  • Gregg Brandon was Head Coach at Bowling Green (OC at Bowling Green)
  • Dan Mullen at Mississippi St (OC at Florida)
  • Mike Sanford was HC of UNLV, now Indiana St (OC at Utah)
  • Tom Herman was HC of Houston, now Texas (OC OSU)

And I guess I am not sure how you don't think Durkin or Ash ran theirs? Durkin ran Michigan's defense with Harbaugh as coach who is more of an offensive minded coach. Ash ran OSU's defense with a offensive minded coach in Urban. Did both of the coaches have input? I am sure they did, but that doesn't mean they didn't run their defenses.

I don't think anyone thinks Drevno has complete control of our offense, because he doesn't. But he plays a big hand in it.

If Drevno goes to WMU, would they make Wheatley run game coordinator in his place?  Would be a good experience and resume builder for him.  Seems like kind of a natural for a running backs coach.

as he's a great coach and I love having him at UM. But, I am sure we will eventually loose him to another school to become a HC and it will be well deserved for him!
