Recruiting help at the Safety spot

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on
Just saw this on another site: Four-star safety prospect and current UCLA commit Tony Jefferson (6-0, 196, 4.5) from Chula Vista (Calif.) Eastlake is living up to his reputation as one of the Golden State's best two-way players. He is getting the job done on both sides of the ball. Though he is committed to the Bruins, he is taking trips to make sure that he is making the right decision. Tony Jefferson, will visit Michigan, Florida and Miami. "I'm still committed to UCLA, but I'm looking around," Jefferson said. "I haven't seen many other schools so I want take some visits to make sure that I'm making the right decision. "I'm going to visit Michigan on November 7th and Florida on November 28th when they play Florida State," Jefferson said. "With Miami, I haven't made the a visit date yet, but I'm planning on visiting them too." "I'm a December graduate, so I will be making my decision pretty soon after my visits," Jefferson said. "I always wanted to go out of state for school." Whoever lands Jefferson will get a player who made the Rivals.com Rivals100 team for the class of 2010 and is ranked as the nation's No. 50 prospect at any position. That would be a nice get at a desperately needed position. Whip out the Snake Oil RR!!

Jefferson would probably be a linebacker if he came to Michigan. The SAM position is pretty well filled with 2009 recruits and Marvin Robinson. We need to recruit corners to play safety, not safety/linebacker tweeners. I'm hoping Cullen Christian and Rashad Knight commit to Michigan for that reason, although I think Christian is resistant to playing safety and wants to remain at corner.

FWIW, they're telling him he would play safety. Whether that would happen or not, I don't know. I do know that they don't like to tell a kid one thing, and then do something completely different once he's on campus. Not saying you're wrong, just letting you know what they're thinking.

I read an article on Rivals a few weeks back where he said "Everyone who's recruiting me wants me as a linebacker" or something to that effect. Maybe Michigan wasn't on his mind then or something, but that's why I said that.

I am new to the blog and following recruiting...I am curious though as to with those rough years at Notre Dame how they can continually recruit top players at virtually every position and get them to commit. Is it their NAME that allows them to do so? And if so, what sets them apart from the MICHIGAN name? Thanks

It is their name, their contract that puts them on NBC every week of the year, and the fact that Charlie Weis used to coach for the Patriots and won Super Bowl rings there. Michigan has a name, but not a national TV contract. And we have a coach who a lot of people see as a Nick Saban-like deserter.

I hope they do see him like Nick Saban. His recruiting has been excellent and they're at the top of the polls. Once UM gets back towards the top of the standings in the big ten, higher rated recruiting classes will follow.
