Recruiting Classes Reranked (spoiler Michigan has Talent!)
Rerankings of top 10 reranked classes each year are listed-
Key Items:
- 2018 rerankings are from Athlon, 2019 & 2020 from ESPN
- Only listed teams when reranked in top 10
- U of M had one of the larger improvements in class when reranked
- By reranking Michigan has more talent than OSU! U of M 4.7 3 yr avg. vs 5.3 for OSU

To be fair, the OP is showing a table of multiple years of reranks from multiple sources, including the ESPN one that was just posted.
That said, OP also did a poor job of titling the post, explaining what this is, and to linking to the sources.
Also, OP messed up the formula in the "average class reranked" column (hint - he's dividing everything by 3 which counts blanks as zeros, lowering the averages for those which don't have rank/rerank every year; should've just used the =average() function)

Are these shortcomings the equivalent of "technical violations?"

It also appears Clemson has bifurcated.

This is pretty good, but would be better if we were to compare Original Average Class Ranking to Reranked Average Class Ranking.
My guess that if that was available, Michigan would show to biggest improvement out of all of these teams (at least in top 10). It definitely shows that the ability for this coaching staff to identify and develop talent is no fluke.

We are good at finding the diamonds in the 3- and 4-star rough.

We are good at developing the 3 and 4 stars.

100% true

Almost like they don't matter in the first place.

To an extent, but they still matter. Don't get me wrong, Sainristil (as just one example) was an incredible find and development job. But Dax Hills are special talents. The key to success is combining great evaluation and coaching with still recruiting elite athletic talent.

My problem is that I believe, while the "analysts" could possibly make a judgement on whether a 16 or 17 year old has the athletic ability to play college football and even single out the elite among them; I find it hard to believe the concept they are informed enough to "rank" those players from 1-2000. IMO, there are just too many variables even focusing only on the athletic attributes and that's before you take in to account "fit" and maturity.
Considering it is one of the things that pre-season rankings are based on, added to the fact that pre-season rankings (aka SEC bias #1) lingers the whole season because of it (Bama in the 2021 CFP/Tennesse's current ranking), I think UofM fans should always try show it's over emphasized.
Plus they always release theses re-rankings to show how much they actually suck at it.

I get it, and college football is littered with guys that recruiting rankings whiffed on (some minor-ish, like 4* Hutchinson turning into the #2 pick in the draft, some drastic, the 2* and 3* guys that blow up). And there are also examples of the analysts just getting it wrong on things like athleticism, like DJ Turner putting up a 4.28 (when he had a 4.62 listed in HS), or JJ, not considered to be particularly mobile as a recruit, being a downright excellent runner (so much so that he models his running ability on Lamar Jackson).
But on the flip side, there are guys at the top that you can just see are special athletic talents. Everybody knew Dax Hill and Peppers and Rashan were just freak athletes as recruits, and those don't grow on trees. And while you can get very far coaching up 3*s, maybe even making the playoffs (Dantonio did it with MSU), I feel like you need at least some of those elite athletes if you want to get past the Bama's and Georgia's and Clemson's of the world, who at times seem like they're just on another level from the rest of college football.

I love the 2018 rerank from #22 to #3. This message board was apoplectic about that recruiting class that turned out multiple high level NFL draft picks and was the backbone of the Michigan 2021 turnaround season.
Here is my question - how did Notre Dame's 2019 and 2020 classes get reranked so much higher in the midst of a dismal 2022 season.

what about those two cincy years? now that's doing some work.

Harbaugh and his coaches evaluate talent far better than the services and also most of the other coaching staffs out there.
This years freshman class is extraordinary.
We are playing three fucking freshman on the DL!

Someone let Maizen know that not all 3*s are created equal.
October 19th, 2022 at 3:18 PM ^
well, of the 4 teams shown all 3 years, it goes GA, AL , UM then OSU. so kudos to harbaugh and crew, despite a lot of negative nancys around here.

This is just a weird way of saying Michigan develops kids better than most, yeah?

Or does a better job in talent identification.

This feels really good, but it says Cincinnati has more talent than us, which is nonsense, so …
