Question for MGoPodcast listeners

Submitted by spiff on September 10th, 2019 at 7:00 AM

I love Ace. We all love Ace. But does anyone else prefer the Brian/David podcasts to the Brian/Ace or Brian/Ace/David?

I feel that for the most part David brings more insightful/original insights and questions. Ace typically just plays off of what Brian is saying. Plus I like their off-topic banter as well.

All the guys are great and I appreciate all their work. But as a product they create for their audience's consumption. I prefer Brian/David and wondered what others though?

Plus there is also the Ace Pod which I like and where he seems to get more into his own thoughts/opinions.

They're all huge f'ing nerds. I say this once a week. It's not a positive, but it's not a negative either. It just is. --That said, I prefer Ace as the witty banter/rapport he has with brian is more important than anything else, in my opinion. To each his own though.

I don't hear it as him being mean to Seth as much as that's just Brian's style.  He can be aggressive but that's his showmanship; he treats everyone the same and expects some dishing out in return.  (Brian's dish-and-take is a rather New England style of comedy.)  Ace keeps up with Brian's punches and hits back.  It doesn't seem like it sometimes because Ace has a soft voice and is usually more subtle with his jabs.  Seth just kind of moves on instead so Brian's jabs wind up being one-sided.

As long as he isn't bothered by it I'm OK with Seth being himself instead of trying to keep up with a pretense of banter that ain't his jam.  Brian's gonna Brian, and he owns the place so he ain't going anywhere.

I agree. Brian definitely has a better rapport with Ace on podcasts than either Seth or Dave. It has gotten a little better between Brian and Seth. Ace does seem a little less energetic than before, which is obviously totally understandable. He may be conserving himself as well. It's good having him on though.

I really like Ace on the podcast. I think he makes it better. Also disagree with the take on him always going with what Brian says. I feel they disagree plenty. Since we're talking about the podcast, though, Brian needs to speak up. Kinda trails off and I'm cranking up the volume to hear everything.

I like any of it...

And they provide an invaluable, priceless, level-headed service to the readers, listeners, and the program as a whole.

** Goes without saying, this is not their burner account.

I think David and Ace are comparable in terms of the insight they bring to the table.  That being, they're both fine.  I don't really notice any drop-off in the quality of the shop talk.  Humor is more subjective, but in that category it's the Ace-Brian banter that's more often given me the guffaws.  So in a world. . . where my opinion counts for anything, Ace gets my vote.

I do worry if Ace is putting too much on his plate, too soon.  It's great to have him back but I'll take less Ace content if it's to avoid burnout down the road.

I have no issue with Ace on there or anyone else. Ace usually has a few more stats and details than Brian does, at least for home games. And I’m guessing it’s because Ace is at the house and not in the stadium. Also, I have realized how slow they talk. Most podcasts I listen to on 1.5x speed. I can comfortably listen to the MGOpodcast on 2x speed.

I like it either way, having a different cast from time to time keeps it interesting.  My only complaint, if you could call it that, are that the podcast and the game column are basically the same content except on the podcast you get the Jamie Mac segment.

I like the podcast as it gives me something to listen to throughout the day. The problem is that it's the same info as Brian's Monday write up. So if I listen to the podcast, I'm not going to miss anything if I skip the column.

For those who prefer Seth, the Friday podcast at the Bo Store is good. It's nice to have the preview to listen to Saturday mornings while getting stuff done around the house.

I actually really enjoy the Brian/Ace/David trifecta. I know some people don’t care for their humor/banter, but I usually find myself cracking up a few times per podcast. If I were to change anything about the audio output of the blog, it would be more Craig Ross!

The To be honest I think I’d like Ace and David. Brian has become pretty tough to listen to recently, and has been an outright jerk to Seth on several recent podcasts. It makes for a difficult listen.

I’m a regular listener and I strongly, strongly disagree with the OP. I actually think the show is significantly better with Ace on it. I think his insights are more well-informed as a general rule, and his banter with Brian is better.

Also, I must be in the minority, but I think Seth is often just wrong about the analysis, and I find myself agreeing with Brian when he corrects Seth. And, Seth seems to see things almost too much through the lens of someone who is surrounded by MSU folks in his day-to-day— he seems overly focused on MSU year round.

I like all the guys but very glad to have Ace back. My favorite podcasts were some of the earliest with just Brian and Ace, but there's no need to neg David or Seth or anybody else - they all bring something to the table and I appreciate all of their contributions to the various pods. I do think keeping it to three people or less as co-hosts on a given show is a good idea.

More discussions on how to cook eggs please.

And more Ace Pod (if you're feeling up to it Ace)

I have liked every iteration of every podcast, except for ones that talk exclusively about hockey or NBA because obviously.

Given what happened to the Ira thread, I don't know why we're doing this but hey, I also don't like thread bashing.

I agree that three’s a crowd and would default to Brian/Ace because I like their chemistry more. David seems to get a little bit of an attitude when Brian says something he doesn’t like and it takes away from the podcast imo. On another note, I think the segment with Jamie is really excellent and adds a lot to the podcast. The last segment of the shows are always a highlight for me. Also because a lot of shade tends to get thrown at certain B1G opponents each week during this time and it’s hilarious.

Live a couple thousand miles away so I am not as inundated with all things Michigan and Detroit sports as probably most on here are.  Have to work a little harder to get info.  I look forward to any new podcasts and this time of year it seems there are 3-4/week from MGoBlog, which is great.  The WTKA roundtable is one of my favorite segments every week.  I'm kinda starved for it and eat it up the moment anything is posted.

That said - the MGoBoys need a sound/mic check.  Last week Ace had a podcast that was barely audible.  I know he's soft-spoken but..... my phone vol was turned all the way up and with earbuds in I could barely hear it.  Couple days later there was the BoStore? podcast and volume up 100% and could hear it but still had to strive to hear it at times.
