QB KJ Costello Crystal Ball to Mississippi St (Mike Leach) by Steve Wiltfong

With it looking like the talk that KJ Costello might transfer to Michigan is over, Dylan McCaffrey fans can breathe a sigh of relief. It looks like Costello is going to Mississippi St to be with Mike Leach.

I would put my interest in the transfer of "Costello" in the "concern" category. As in :This program cannot survive another damn QB transfer being brought in. Develop and play the QBs you recruit!!!!!! And this applies across the board. There is one hell of a lot of talent brought in every year-this roster is loaded. Sure, it is not loaded in an unequivocally elite program sense but there is enough talent here to knock off those teams one out of three times. Coach these kids up and turn them loose. This mounting, losing record against higher ranked teams on the road defines this program as lacking in coaching more than anything else. I am not a win-at-all-costs person but I do believe it is unfair to these kids to not be taught how to compete and win at a higher level.

I guess this is probably my fault for not being clear in the initial post, but Costello was included on my list for three reasons.

1. Michigan was very high on his list coming out of high school.

2. Michigan has clearly developed a pattern in the Jim Harbaugh era of bringing in transfers at QB (Patterson, Rudock, O'Korn). Three of his five seasons at Michigan have had transfers starting from day one, and another season saw O'Korn starting part-time due to injury.

3. A prominent Michigan writer (at a "recruiting service" site) said that Michigan would take a look at Costello.

At no point did I feel like I implied that Michigan had flown out to see Costello, offered him a scholarship, got him on campus, etc., but like I said, maybe I wasn't clear enough.

Yikes. Looking above in the thread, people are talking about Yoder. I don't really pay attention to anything Yoder says. In fact, he blocked me on Twitter long ago for some reason, and I don't think I ever interacted with him.

Anyway, I went back and found Sam Webb's comment on Costello, in which he said he believed Michigan would "ABSOLUTELY" take a look at his film and evaluate.

That is not the same as being "in talks" with Costello about transferring or actively trying to recruit him here. I'm sure they watch film on several players this time of year, but that doesn't mean they are going to go out and try and get him.

Like everyone else, I want Michigan to have the best team possible every year and the best program possible in the long run.  If you have an opportunity to get a credible instant starter you take it, but in the long run,  you can't count on that and Harbaugh needs his guys to develop.   I miss the days of Grbac, Collins, Greise, Brady, Henson, Navarre, Henne where we had solid play and never skipped a beat.  More important Harbaugh needs to fix his offense.  Gattis started to get us there this last year, but the DPJ/Collins/Black/Martin class was essentially wasted.  I'm looking forward to Collins, Bell, etc. to blow it up this year with DM and/or JM hitting laser strikes.

Shopping in the transfer portal is the way to go. A school like Michigan with a big reputation and a lot of resources would be foolish not to go to that route.

I was one of the people that wanted to Michigan to take a look at the kid. I have to imagine Michigan has done their research and decided whether they wanted to pursue already. Shea's struggles in the senior bowl make me feel uneasy with the QBs on the roster assuming Shea was the best of the bunch. I'm starting to come around to the reality that QB play could be mediocre/average again.

This is why I almost completely dismiss the standard player statement about "I place a high value on academics and that's one reason why I'm committing to the University of (insert college name)." There's no doubt that Costello made a number of such statements when he committed to Stanford, and it's all eyewash and PR.

The percentage of elite recruits who really and truly give a damn about the actual academics of the school they commit to is miniscule.
