QB Jaden Rashada signs 9.5 million NIL deal to sign with the Miami Hurricanes
Its being reported the 4-star prospect and No. 7 quarterback in the class of 2023, per 247Sports' composite rankings, agreed to a $9.5 million name, image and likeness deal with Miami booster John Ruiz and also turned down an $11 million offer from Florida's Gator Collective.
That's not even the shocking part to me. Apparently he has a NIL attorney negotiating his deals, before he even signs with a school. "Jaden left millions on the table," Michael W. Caspino, who is known as an NIL lawyer, said. "Millions. He did not pick the highest offer. He went there because he loves Miami, the coaches and the opportunity."
Caspino also said Florida's NIL collective needs some work in this new era of college football."Florida is the most dysfunctional collective in all of college football," he said. "I plan on steering my clients away from them. From my standpoint, I never ever want to deal with them again. If it weren't for the collective that's completely dysfunctional at Florida, he probably would have been there."
Of course Florida is denying the whole thing

How long before the NIL bubble bursts?

Making more than their position coaches and every one of their teachers too. A lot of guys are not going to play school...
Absolutley love this blog BUT...
this whining and bitching about other schools getting players with NIL and how we aren't is getting fucking old.
Packing you a nice lunch. You're going to need it.
haha! Thanks, DH. Will there be a snack pack??
NIL is really starting to look like a huge mistake. There's a very real albeit intangible difference between selling your autograph and signing a contract to play at a school.
Hey Josh Gattis, good luck trying to start a different QB, or with taking him out if he’s having a bad game.
if I were Gattis I’m not so sure I would like this very much.
This is out of control. I believe it will be reined in eventually as donors are going to be upset when the 5-star can't miss recruit they paid for is a bust. It's currently like a bubble being created by Fear Of Missing Out - FOMO. Schools/Teams are overpaying for the hot new stock.
Exactly. It's all going to come down to ROI for the capital. If this kid leads them to the playoffs in a few years, they got a bargain. If he's a bust, the wallets will get tighter and more discerning as market valuations of the players becomes more refined. It will always be a bit of a crapshoot.
Good for them.
Brave new world, of college athletics.
This is just nuts. Maybe I'm just a dick, but it's really out of hand and it doesn't make sense to pay these kids millions of dollars just to come to your school. They really need to tame this and put up a ton of regulations. It's not even like they're getting paid for their name, image and likeness, they're just getting straight up paid to play football.
If they don't get this fixed, it's going to really ruin college football/basketball, along with the transfer portal (much less than NIL, but the 2 combined is a lot).
What happens if he doesn’t perform up to expectations? Does his pay get cut? Imagine being a booster paying such sums for an underperforming player. Eep!
Look at DJ from Clemson. Hyped coming into the year, but really struggled during the year.
With great amounts of money come great(er) expectations.
I am concerned about how this will impact players. I really wish we had a formal pay for play than this. Universities could control things better and protect players.
I doubt these kids—or their families—have a clue about the true nature of what they're stepping into. They may think they do, but getting criticized on social media for a high school game isn't remotely in the same universe as what they're going to encounter while playing for high profile nationally prominent programs.
As soon as Dante Moore throws a game-losing INT against Washington or Rashada has a mediocre game against FSU, the amount of abuse they're going to encounter will make what John Navarre had to endure look like a quiet afternoon tea.
Excellent point
I'm all for the players making as much as they can, but when a 4 star QB (roughly 40th best player overall) is making roughly the same salary as the NBA #8 selection over the first 2 years (since those are guaranteed), then you've got a system that will almost certainly force the schools most likely via the NCAA to reign it in.
Not sure how that will happen, but there's just too much money going directly to the players for these schools to let this continue uncontrolled.
Shelling out stupid money for untested 18 year old football players only makes sense in a world where people are willing to pay a fortune for bullshit NFTs... and that's the world we are living in... unfortunately.
Sure -- what's not to love?
This is insane. I hope that this a 4-year deal not for 1-year. But even if it is for 4 years, the average is more than Lamar Jackson's salary for 2022 at 2.3 million.
9.5 million for three years is child's play. It will get much crazier.
Anyone who couldn't see this coming, well, idk what to tell ya.
Of course I'm pro-player, we're all pro-player but college football is nothing more than minor-league NFL these days.
Well this lie might be by design. It draws attention to Miami. And recruits may start paying attention to them.
"How long before the NIL bubble bursts?"
Not soon enough.
I'd rather pay linemen and build around them. A good line can make 3 star players shine. You can't build a great team solely based on QB talent. Who is going to protect and block for them???
If it weren't for the collective that's completely dysfunctional at Florida, he probably would have been there
Gotta feel good about this statement as a Miami fan.
I said we would go from averaging 12th in recruiting to 12th as some passed us and some dropped below us. I am convinced 25th is our new spot in recruiting. Too many young motivated boosters out there and it moves a lot faster than the old money. When you got a fanbase that sits for the games and stands for the band this should probably be expected.
No thanks.
Well, at least we avoided the chaos of paying the players.
A wise person once told me something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If that's what the boosters want to do... have at it. Personally, I think it's nuts.
