Penn State is a cult and the football program, along with associated buildings, should be burned to the ground never to return.

They more than deserve anything that hurts the program.

The end.

I don't think he's elite (a criticism I heard coming in is his teams have some rather fundamental difficulties defending the read option and mobile QBs, and that was proven out in a couple PSU games).

But he is good.  This would be a loss to PSU, no doubt.

Brent Pry, who already has the title of co-DC, I'd say is 80% likely to get the promotion if/when Shoop leaves.  Pry has been on Franklin staffs for each of the last 4 years, and was a young assistant on Franklin (the football player)'s East Stroudsburg teams way back in the day.

There is no doubt that 2016 is off to a poor start for Coach Franklin --- 0-1 in football games, Hackenberg taking "shots of omission" at him, PSU already had a defensive lineman decommit, and now this.  The heat is growing for him to get on-and-off-the-field victories.

I have no idea if Zordich would have any desire to "return home."  One thing that depressed me: I looked it up and was shocked to see Zordich is 52.  That makes ME feel old!

I live in TN so I've been hearing about this from their fans for a couple days.  They say that Hoke is another DC candidate if Shoop's buyout is a problem.

I had a couple co-workers come into my office yesterday and tell me.  I try not to pay much attention to the Vols because my feelings for them are very similar to many on this blogs feeling for State.  I went ahead and looked at Volnation this morning though and there was a thread about Hoke.  I didn't read the whole thing, but the OP didn't say where he heard that Hoke was a serious candidtate.  Just said that he read it somewhere. Don't know if my co-workers had read it on that site or somewhere else.

OSU and MSU will be strong enough to give us credibility coming out of the Big Ten and our OOC schedule going forward is plenty fine to make the playoff. PSU sucking is satisfying and just an easier W on the way to a hopeful CFP berth

Pure speculation as he was pissed he wasn't offered an interview for the HC job but he did take a lateral to go to OSU.

Franklin is PSU's RichRod.  Hot coach hired for the bling value.  If anything RR had a more established resume.  I do think this will be Franklin's last year so I can understand why Shoop would leave for a lateral to a more stable position.

Shoop is very good. Had three top-25 defenses at Vandy and did pretty well last year considering the monkey rodeo that was PSU's offensive unit. If they snag Shoop, I expect them to be in the SEC championship next year.

Coach Shoop on that Tennesee staff? They're already big players in midwest and mid-atlantic recruiting, they'll only be more of a threat... and we'll beat Penn State by at least 20 next year

Devastating loss IMO -if it happens.

He was the quiet reason for Franklin success --both Vandy and PSU won with defense not offense.

I continue to believe James "Hoke" Franklin has 1 year left at PSU and this is another nail in coffin.

Also do you realize how difficult to find a DC with a good looking spouse this late in the off season.

While good for UM short term as its an east opponent if he goes I want Franklin @ PSU fo a decade  and this would ruin that chance.  Also  losing 2 bright minds like Aranda and Shoop back to back to SEC for lateral moves makes the conference look bad as well

Given that Franklin is supposed to be an offensive guy*, losing his DC who has been very good would definitely be a big blow. He'll need to find a strong replacement since he delegates things on that side. Shoop has been with him since his start at Vandy, if I'm not mistaken - losing him would have to sting. *(Hard to believe it though, given how bad they've been offensively.)

Smart for Shoop. I think most recruits and coaches see the writing on the wall. Frankin couldn't win with Hackenberg, I'm really not confident he can win without a strong defense. Shoop keeping his own stock high if he leaves

We'll see how they are next year. Tons of talent that's for sure, but they imploded in the 4th quarter this year in all the games this year that really mattered.

Alabama, Florida, and Oklahoma were all winnable games, and they lost them all in the 4th quarter. Florida and Oklahoma after blowing big leads.

Definitely a team to watch, but they need to learn how to finish.

I wonder if the new OC at PSU played a factor in Shoop looking around for another position.  If I were a DC, I would avoid as much as possible being on a team with a proclivity for an up tempo offense.
