Possibility of redshirt for Peppers and Hoke's take on offensive line issues

Submitted by MeanJoe07 on

Here is some REAL information regarding Peppers.  According to Hoke, a Medical Redshirt may be a possibility.  I guess his injuries are severe enough for this to be in consideration.  Also, Hoke provides a theory (excuse?) about the Offensive Line's lack of development relative to other positions.  He thinks the lack of summer camps for lineman and teams "trying to recreate defense" may be the problem. Yikes... Link  Thoughts?

So 4 day lineman camps is how they get better?  Not from their position coach who teaches them 5 months out of the year on a daily basis? Hoke is out there by Pluto, somewhere...

I'd have to see the numbers, but it sure seems like if anything, linemen are developing faster than they were in the '90s, at least when it comes to effectiveness in college. Part of it is the spread stuff because less pure physical development is necessary, but still.

That "legit" block was pretty far from the play, and the kid went right at the knees, helmet first.  To our best recruit in a decade, on his first game as a true freshman.  If it makes you feel better, then I hope "kid karma" catches up with the kid, like his girlfriend dumps him, or something meaningless like that.

i dont exactly recall that play but i remember thinking at the time it was pretty legit block.  i was looking forward to seeing peppers play as much as anyone (knowing hed instantly be michigans best athlete after watching his tape)  but the app state kid just playing hard so well assume youre joking

"The other things that's changed a little is the defenses, how people are playing defenses - the movements, the different fronts you may see during course of the game. Someone is always trying to recreate defense."

Again, of course, a lot of other teams don't seem to have a huge problem adapting to what gets thrown at them in terms of defense up front. It still seems to come back to coaching here. That being said, this is the first year walking through the land of Nussmeier's inside zone, and the offensive line play, while hardly superb, has not hit tire fire 2013 levels. There has been improvement on some fronts, but it isn't a complete 180 certainly.

That's not remotely comparable. We've seen some of Peppers. He's already pretty good from what we've seen.

Who the shit thought Derrick Green would easily be an early NFL draftee? He has all the measurables, I guess. No one thought that after seeing him in action for the first time, anyway. He still needs polishing, though he's definitely made a jump.

prob the same people who thought clark would be all american last year and then again pushed tons of hype this year, or people who assumed morris steps in and hits 70% after gardner leaves, or hoops fans assuming irvin and walton jump pro after 2 years, etc.

youre right, not even comparable.  green was touted prospect but there was no consensus on his ability / projection and his OL was going to be shaky.  peppers was arguably the best pure high school athlete in country as senior and he was consensus top 1-5 prospect across the board - not to mention he instantly became michigans most explosive athlete

You'd think Hoke would run out, but they just keep coming. Not sure how I feel about Peppers. If he ends up playing it would be valuable game experience for him and, if he meets his hype level, he won't be here to see that 5th year. But, if it turns out he needs the rest to heal and takes the red shirt he still proabably wouldn't stay for 5 years. Tough call. Normally I'd say I trust the coaching staff to make the right call, but...yeah.

I don't think it would be a medical red shirt due to the fact that he has played so little this season. I believe, but could be wrong, that a normal red shirt can be applied here, which means a medical red shirt, in addition to a normal one, can still be used if need be.

I don't know, friend. I have read many times that you can play up to four games in a season and still get a normal red shirt. Again, I'm just telling you what I read. I don't know the ins and outs of redshirts.

If you are on the field or the court for a single play you can't get a normal redshirt. I suspect if you did a little research you would be hard pressed to find any other answer. If you sustain a season ending injury, then it matters how deep into the season you played to be eligible for a medical RS.

No no no...

You can participate in up to 30% of your team's contests, with none coming after the halfway point of the season, to petition for a MEDICAL redshirt.

One snap, or play, and your eligibility for that year is counted (except for cases of medical hardship, as described above).

And move Jackson into some b/s role like Assistant AD for Football Development and let him work under Greg Harden and Lloyd Carr. He can continue our positive relationships in the urban areas that he's recruited over the years.

Special teams coach needs to be fire ASAP as well. Dan Ferrigno.

Hoke should've fired all 3 along with Borges last year.

I don’t disagree with any of those suggestions. I think if Hoke is retained after this season, he will and should be forced to do some moderate house cleaning on the staff. I think Hoke is being given every opportunity to keep his job and if the team shows more improvement, can get to .500 and at least be competitive against MSU and OSU, I think we could see him back in 2015. That’s still a tall order, but possible.

If this team shows improvement from this point through the end of the season I could live with Hoke coming back (I might throw-up in my mouth a little, but I'd live). Brandon should be gone regardless.

As for the rest of the staff, I think Nuss should get to decide what happens on offense and Matt decide what happens on defense and Hoke just rubber stamp everything.

I'm sorry. I know BH is a nice guy but he is a complete buffoon. He needs to have as little to do with everything (other than coaching the dline) as possible if this ship is going to get righted.

I want to see what Nuss can do with coaches he believes are good at their job. The defensive staff I'm pretty ambivalent about at this point. If they stay fine, if they go fine. I wold like to see Manning stay on though.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Serious question because I don't know all the intricasies of offensive line play, but does Nuss have any impact on the development of the O-Line or does he just focus on schemes and play calling while Funk focuses on player development.  I guess my question is how much responsibility does a coordinator have on the play of different position groups.

If I am the OC and came to Michigan knowing the Oline was a complete cluster $-#&, then damn right I getting involved. I'm spending as much time as I can with them to make improvements. It is my but on the line and I wouldn't want a guy like Funk bringing down the rest of my career and tarnishing my reputation.

This is exactly my thought and could possibly be the end of the discussion.

It amazes me that he really thinks the Michigan fanbase is that inept and stupid that we would swallow such a story. Really? How is it only a few certain OL's like Michigan consistently fail to develop? Other schools seem to have young or even younger OL and you know actually do something with them. While we're at it Hoke how about recruiting an actual WR with a pulse? If 7 on 7 camps are having such success why is it Hoke has been unable to recruit any WR worth their weight? We have Fuchness true, but he was recruited as a TE. What good WR's Hoke has had have been leftovers from RichRod. In fact, when will all this amazing talent Hoke has recruited begin showing up and making a difference? Oh wait, it's not about winning games I forgot.

I also can't believe no one has made mention of Hoke's dig at the protest. Apparently the administration's talking point is that the protest fizzled because it had no merit when in fact it was cancelled due to efforts of the University President. Was this a concerted effort to head off an embarrassing situation? That is what I feared was behind it and last I checked Dave Brandon was still AD so methinks that was indeed the strategy. Now if a protest has no emotion behind it and wouldn't work anyways so they've weathered yet another storm and took charge of the conversation surrounding it. Admin 1, students 0?

I'm going to call it now, if Hoke can beat MSU or OSU and win say 3 out of last 5 games plus make a bowl he is safe and Brandon won't be going anywhere no matter what.

This is what pisses me off most about Hoke.  He talks and treats the fans and media like they are dumb.  Like we'll just nod our head and say "oh...OK" at whatever nonsense he's selling because we're incapable of coming to some conclusions on our own.  And to use the man's words against him, this is Michigan for god's sake.  We're all pretty fucking smart.  It ain't Buckhill Community College.  We can read between the lines and see past your bullshit.
