Parting Shot from "Ref" Dan Capron: 'Harbaugh Acted Like 4th Grader' on JT Barrett Call

Submitted by Mo Better Blues on February 10th, 2020 at 12:31 PM

Not to add insult to injury with this post — but retiring thief, oops! I mean "ref", Dan Capron seems to have no problem doing so. The obvious vindictiveness of this guy should disturb anyone who hopes for fair and impartial officiating.

What a clown. THere's no way the linesman gets reprimanded/bumped down if he doesn't make that call. That's a call no crew ever makes, much less in the game of the decade for the conference's two all-time greatest programs with a national championship berth on the line. Did he throw it on the field? Yes. Was it intentional? No. Not exactly the black-and-white situation he is talking about there.

If Capron thinks Harbaugh was comporting himself like a 4th grader, I wonder how he would describe a former OSU coach here—4 yr old? Toddler? Infant?

Capron loves OSU.  He would've described it as a fiery coach with an unquenchable thirst for victory demonstrating his love for the Buckeyes and his displeasure over a hotly contested call.

You know - acceptable behavior.

You have to admit it was nice to see them finally, FINALLY fucking own up to the fact that:

1. We dont like your head coach

2. We are going to make (or not make) calls based on our personal feelings about your head coach.

Love how Capron fails to mention that Harbaugh was losing his shit in that game and rightfully so over more than just the spot. The whole game was officiated in a bias manner, OSU had 6 total penalty yards the ENTIRE game despite numerous obvious holds, PI's on Michigan receivers, etc, The spot was the least of the problems with the officiating that day. Also wasn't Capron the Ohio native who was barred from doing UM/OSU games prior to the 2016 game? I mean weren't all three of the officials from Ohio? Harbaugh should not be criticized from blowing a gasket in that game, his team was getting screwed all day prior to that spot. I would actually be more inclined to criticize Harbaugh if he didn't stick up for his players that day. Also gotta love an official pretty much stating they have a bias openly, good god the officiating in the Big Ten is an embarrassment.

The guy single-handedly changes the trajectory of two programs by swinging the score by 21 points and he has the gall to say that.  This is why refs need to be accountable.  They act like little girls.

He claims an offsides call is a "no brainer" in the Harbaugh story, then tells a story about how an offsides call was made incorrectly later in the article. What a shitbag.

Here’s something I saved from 2016 -

The 2016 Michigan-OSU game featured the following referees:

1) Daniel Capron (lead referee)

2) Kevin Schwarzel (back judge)

3) Bobby Sagers (side judge)

Daniel Capron was fired after a September 21st, 2002 game between Purdue and Wake Forest for poor officiating. The Big Ten commissioner at the time said the following: “During the course of the game, these officials did not officiate well enough to meet Big Ten standards,” Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said in a statement. “Therefore, they will forfeit future officiating assignments.”

Kevin Schwarzel is from Athens, OH, is a self-proclaimed lifelong OSU fan and was NOT allowed to work the 2006 game between Michigan and OSU, simply because he's from Ohio. Excerpt from The Athens News: ‘This year, I did my first full schedule in the Big 10,' he said. Schwarzel was an Ohio State fan growing up, and said he was excited to be on the field for the Ohio State/Texas game, which featured (at the time) the top-ranked team in the country against the second-ranked team.’

Bobby Sagers is from Ohio. He was elected into OHSAA HOF earlier that year at a ceremony in Columbus, Ohio.

For those who don't believe the referees cost Michigan the game...

Numerous false starts on #74 Jamarco Jones and holding by Ohio State's offensive line.

(5:12 - 1st) - Pass Interference #2 Marshon Lattimore (NOT called)

Result: M drive ended. Forced to punt.

(4:15 - 1st) - Face Mask #73 Michael Jordan (NOT called)

Result: Ryan Glasgow went through the penalty. J.T. Barrett sacked.

(12:37 - 2nd) - Block in the Back #83 Terry Mclaurlin (NOT called)

Result: Ryan Glasgow injured on the play.

(1:30 - 3rd) - False Start #65 Pat Elflein (NOT called)

Result: Instead, offside called on #73 Maurice Hurst. 5 yard penalty. Subsequently, Jim Harbaugh flips play sheet and slams down headset on his sideline and is assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty which is a travesty in its own right. Ball moves half the distance to the goal. OSU scores a touchdown two plays later.

(4:32 - 4th) - Pass Interference #44 Delano Hill (called)

Result: On an uncatchable ball, Michigan's Delano Hill is ruled for pass interference. Had this not been called, OSU would have punted the ball away. Instead, they are rewarded with a new set of downs. OSU drives down the field and kicks a game-tying field goal.

(2nd OT) - Pass Interference #8 Gareon Conley (NOT called)

Result: 4th down. Michigan kicks a field goal instead of being rewarded a new set of downs to potentially score a touchdown.

(2nd OT) - Michigan's #43 Chris Wormley stops OSU's #8 J.T. Barrett short of the 1st down (NOT called)

Result: 1st down awarded to OSU. OSU scores game winning touchdown on the next play. Game should have been over and Michigan should have moved to #2 in the CFP rankings.

Capron delivers much self-confirmation.  Harbaugh flips the clipboard back toward the sideline and Capron says he threw it on the field.  True but he was also throwing it toward an assistant.  As mentioned after the game this is not a violation and Capron reportedly said it was a violation in basketball.  A rather pompous interview.

Capron mentions a replay review from up top.  I don't think so.  I don't recall any hint of delay for review other than moving the down markers.  I don't think he was buzzed for a review.  Now I have to back and check the tape.  If there was a review, it may have been the shortest review on record.

When you learn about sports at a young age, you expect unbiased, fair officiating. And then you grow up and find out that officiating is biased at the ref level, and it's condoned at the conference level, due to perceived slights, dislike of personalities, and a desire for the almighty dollar.

OSU has an AD that works to combat this and Michigan has the AD that takes the high road. I wish Warde would have a bit of backbone with the conference. I'm sure other conferences would be happy to have us, and that they would back that up with $$$. The credible threat of leaving would be very powerful.

Warde doesn't take the high road; he takes the bitch road.

The job's easier if you do absolutely nothing to address problems and hand-wave your apathy by saying you're above the fray.  This is the "high road" like British commanders sipping tea and nibbling crumpets safely back in the command centers while the infantry get shelled.

True leaders get in the mud with the grunts.

Was this the ref who grabbed Mike Weber's a$$ mid-game in 2016??  Yeah, no ref who participated in the calling of that game gets an ounce of my attention or respect.  Turrible, just turrible...

I really wish you hadn't posted this useless article. The author asked completely trash questions. Whats Urban Meyer like? Softball question. "Jim Harbaugh got an unsportsmanlike penalty for flinging shit..." Really guy, that's your go to Harbaugh question? Lmao... what a clown

I usually don't go on about flaming refs etc... however...

As people become bolder in their life assertions, gain entitlement, and less and less honorable... the NCAA or 'Other' needs to step up and start criminal charges.

There are 'real' damages here, not only to the Universities involved, but the players, trajectories of entire programs, student athletes, and serious economic repercussions. Michigan grads need to start asserting their influence on these people/organizations.
