OT - Your Plans for this First Warm Weather Weekend

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

I don't know about you, but up north we seem to have gone from winter into about 5 minutes worth of spring, then straight into summer.  Weekend highs here will be into the 70's, nothing but sun for a week to come.  Looking at the chores list, it will be time to get the family outside and working (and having some fun) on many things that have laid fallow over the winter.

So what is on tap for this first truly warm weekend of the year?  Will you be productive, or spoil yourself with some outdoor leisure time activities?

Regardless of your plans, have a great weekend.

Every time I've tried brisket it has been an abject failure.  Pretty dialed in on the pork butts though.  Much more forgiving.

On the topic of BBQ...there is a food truck in Ann Arbor that I was recently introduced to called Ricewood BBQ and it is awesome.  Best BBQ I've had in A2 by a longshot.  Parked behind Morgan and York on Packard south of Stadium.

You got to foil that brisket for the last 2-3 hours at least.  Pork butt is hard to fail at but briskets are more challenging for sure.  It can be frustrating too as brisket costs 3x as much as a pork butt.

if you have a smoker, smoke that sucker for about 5 or 6 hours the day before and then take it out, put it in a nice deep pan add a little water but not much and cover it in saran wrap and then foil on top of that and put it in the oven overnight at 150 degrees for about 12 hrs and it will be melt in your mouth good.

As far as flavoring is concerned, just flavor it anyway you want, salt and pepper is always good and whatever rub you want to add, let me know how that works out.

One of my kids has a high school doubleheader baseball game on Saturday. After that it's yard work and may have to go to the office some time this weekend to finish up a project that's due next week.

18 holes today and tomorrow to get ready for the start of our league Monday night. In between, get the grass cut and toss some 10 oz NY strips on the grill.

My wife and I brought home a golden retriever puppy last Friday so we'll be spending the weekend playing and training with her. Been a ton of fun but absolutely exhausting.

Much more tolerable to stand outside at 3 AM waiting for her to pee when it isn't 15 and snowing.

I bought one for about $50.00 at Home Depot and have never had a pest problem (with the exception of insects they crawl right out) for longer than two days so I am sure I saved a fortune in attic/home repairs, We used to have racoons the size of dogs running in and out of the woods raiding garbage cans or anything they think might have food or warmth in it. When I say used to, I mean it, they are gone I take them with me when I go disc golfing out at Holly Recreation Area and drop them off in the woods. If you do this without being seen the total cost is a can of cat food. Just point the cage and open and viola, a critter cannon, they run out of that cage like their ass is on fire. I try to drop them off in the same spot as other recently captured coons cause they may be related. From what I understand you don't want to get caught doing this so make it quik.

We actually caught one squirrel in a live trap last month, but he turned out to be the dad. We released him in a Metro park about 5 miles from our house. Then we realize there is a mom squirrel and a nest of babies. My wife insists we not separate the mom from her babies. It's turning into a nightmare. I never thought of catfood though, that's a good idea.

Here in South Haven, we have a different climate than the rest of Michigan.  My chicken tractor also is designed with a heat lamp for the cold nights.  The chicks of this breed sure do grow fast too - I was chasing one around the garage this morning after it escaped during feeding and they're only 1.5 weeks old.

Plus, I'm only prepping the tractor.  The birds won't be in it until next week at least.  Can't have any chance of snow - but they're going to outgrow my brooder in short order.
