OT-For what else do you have an EUTM?

Submitted by WalterMitty on

My 11 year old daughter has a golf tournament today. She is getting ridiculously good. In some of her tournaments she is allowed to have a caddy, and in some she has to carry her own bag. I so often have to work and miss her rounds, but today I get to caddy for her, and see every shot. It's 3:30 in the morning, and I can't sleep because I'm so excited! I've cleaned her clubs, been over every hole online, and have her bag filled with balls, tees, water, ball markers, divot repair, band aids, range finder, towels, granola, etc.. My favorite thing in the world is to watch her stick a 9 iron to 6 feet from 125 out! What do you attack with an Enthusiasm Unknown to Mankind?

Ice fishing. That's my favorite diversion. I wish I was like Xtra and my Faith was something I attacked like that. My job is trying to give me a heart attack lately so ice fishing might go from diversion to main occupation, sans salary.

give you a heart attack. That won't do anyone any good.

My brother once told me that when it comes to the BS that drives you crazy,  just actively don't give a shit. His quote was "From the outside, no one can tell the difference between a state of Zen-like peace and acceptance, and active apathy.'

Camping. I really enjoy the state forest campgrounds in Michigan and doing the backcountry stuff as well. I prefer to fly solo except for my pup.

I really enjoy Geocaching.  A couple years ago, I was all EUTM about it but work and home constraints have dampered it a bit.

I guess listening to music has taken its place.

I am big into mountain biking. Picked the sport up a couple years ago and really enjoy the challenge, the workout and just being outside in the woods.

The fact that your daughter hits a 9 iron from 125 out at the age of 11 is damn impressive. Good luck to her, OP.

I also have an EUTM for golf - I always played sports growing up that ate into any chance to take golf seriously. Picked it up about 3 years ago as a serious hobby. Went from not being able to crack 100 to typically shooting high 80's.

Good luck with the golf tourney, OP!  I used to play golf regularly with co-workers, 1-2 times/week.  We'd leave work early, pretty much whenever we were bored (or just didn't want to work), and play.  Then one of them bought a ski boat, and the golf stopped in favor of water skiing.  I miss golf...

My EUTM is for field training retrievers.  For about 15 years I was heavily involved with AKC and NAHRA retriever hunt tests.  I trained several dogs, and helped train hundreds of others.  I also judged the events, including many of the Super Retriever Trials, and two of ESPN's Great Outdoor Games field trial competitions (the first in Lake Placid, and the one in Reno).  I travelled all over the country judging events, and had a fantastic time wherever I went.  Future wife, and now a young kid, have all but ended that obsession, but I really loved that life and miss it greatly to this day.  I'm hoping to get back into it when the kid is a little older and we don't have so many dogs in the house.

Family and teaching.

And that's pretty much my entire life the past decade, so things are good here.

but if wer'e sharing11 yr old daughter stories. . .

Mine won the softball bi-polar award last night for having 6 errors in the field (costing 2 runs), & walking 6 batters (costing 2 runs)

but

she made 6 outs herself (including 2 double plays)  got on base 4 times (2 walks, single, double) stole 8 bases, & scored 4 runs.

I practically had a heat attack watching that performance.

Stole 8 bases or passed balls? It is not a stolen base if a passed ball. Find it hard to believe she legitimately stole home (which she would've had to do in your scenario).

Sorry to be an asshole, but one of my biggest pet peeves is inaccurate stats and it is never more apparent than in youth/HS baseball and softball.

4 passed balls, 4 legit steals, catcher was able to throw to 2/3rd every time.
She stole 2nd & 3rd each 4 times as a lead off hitter over 5 innings.
Slid every time (which makes the coach VERY happy since some girls won't)
Cant't steal home, can only cross on walks or hits.

I find it hard to beleive you are sorry about being an asshole.

Stole second all four times? Thought there was a double in there.

I just see it too often. 7 steals in a basketball game, home run when it was really a double, etc.

Regardless, it sounds like she has potential to be a terrific and aggressive player and I hope you enjoy watching her play.

Cooking for sure.  Music has always been a part of my life although I hardly have time anymore. I enjoy a good poker game when I can find one.  If I can't sleep, I love turning on my NES and getting lost in a game from my childhood.

Washing the clubs...that's kind of, you know, something you do before a competetive golf tournament. Or a round with friends, depending on where you're playing. I get your point-- he should probably do it with her, rather than for her-- but aren't you projecting a bit here/making a leap to essentially accusing him of being a helicopter parent?

Also, I'm not sure if you play golf, but the stuff he did for her is the type of stuff that caddies do for players at the PGA level.

I guess it just rankles me to see someone essentially bashing a man for having so much excitement for his child and wanting to be so involved. I agree with the premise that there's a fine line, but to assume the OP has crossed that line seems a little harsh, IMO.

This is exactly it: Let her have a part of it. And also, understand that she's 11. You're not caddying for Tiger Woods. If you can't sleep because you're too hyped about your kid's golf tournament, you're taking it too far.

Ever seen the show The Short Game on the Esquire Network? It's about kids who golf competitively, and the parents who seem to take it way more seriously than they do. You see two kinds of parents: the ones who set up their kid with matching outfits and treat everything like they're doing a mini-US Open, and the ones who sit back, let their kid be a kid, and have fun with things. What the OP seems to be is a lot of the former, and very little of the latter. And guess which kind of family seems to be having more fun with it?

Your daughter probably loves the fact that you get so excited about her golf performance! It's part of being a good Dad!

Participate with enthusiasm, I say!

Born & raised in Ann Arbor but just moved out of town & got some land.  Now my wife & I are living the dream as we fix up our house,  fish and swim in our private stocked pond, watch our kids play in the yard, enjoy the view of the deer and wildlife in the yard (I can't wait for hunting season!) and I chop firewood to use in the wood stove during the winter.   We planted a bunch of fruit trees this year & plan on having chickens, milk goats, & other animals starting next year.

May sound like a lot of work but I was getting lazy & complacent so having work to do in the yard has been fantastic & I'm more healthy than I have been in a while.

Best part is, my taxes are less than $4,000 per year. :)  Lots of land & the house is decent, all for less than many houses in my old subdivision in Superior Township (by Ypsilanti).
