OT: What do you want to be when you grow up?

Submitted by The Mad Hatter on

Or, where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I've spent my entire career in banking at the same company, having my soul slowly whittled away into a tiny little nub.  I didn't even want this job, I just sort of fell into it.

So this year my wife and I are starting a small business.  We've done it twice before (one did very well, the other, not so much) and I think this one is a winner.

What about you?  Are you already in your dream job saving the world and making tons of money doing it?  Retired?  Slowly going insane in your cubicle?  Any escape plan?

If this topic is judged to be crap, here's a picture to make up for it.

after losing my brother a few short months ago at 43, and my dad having had a heart attack at 43...being here 10 years from now would be great.

Seconded. My father and his father died at comparable ages from the same root cause. Not only do I know what will try to kill me, I know approximately when. That's more than 10 years from now, but alive would be good.

Would like to see UM beat OSU and MSU at least once in their lifetime. I'm not sure it will actually happen, and seems unlikely, but it never hurts to have dreams.

If I could write the script, I'd own a bar/restaurant that served smoked beef brisket, pork belly, my special bbq beans, with dozens of Michigan beers on tap and Michigan distilled liquor on the shelf.

All I've ever wanted in life is to move to Ann Arbor, have a house off State or Main right in the heart of the athletic campus and have season tickets.

I'm going to school for web development and that's no mistake as I'm learning along the way while assembling SuperGuide Online.

I've been in the press box for a game before. Last season for unlv.

While it was an amazing experience seeing it from a bird's eye view and I'm forever appreciative to the guy that gave me the opportunity, the no cheering part killed me.

My place is in the stands screaming and yelling with every other fan.

What is the cost of living like in Ann Arbor? Not necessarily by the stadium. I am an out of towner, but have been to AA quite a few times. Would definitely like to maybe live out there one day. I know it's not cheap, but just curious what some figures might be.

This...

We bought here last year, price wise it is not San Fran but it isn't Grayling either.  We signed our purchase agreement before setting foot in the house and paid a good chunk over asking, it was extremely competative.  I had never heard of the term "escalator clause" before trying to buy here.  Our realtor said with the U and several large corporations in the area as well as the good schools and general good timeiness of the town that there is a pretty consistant supply of homes (University and corporate relocations) and that the area is buffered somewhat from the ebbs and flows of the regional housing market.  Gas, groceries, clothing, etc. all seem to cost about the same as the rest of the state but the propoerty taxes are murder.

I go on Trulia when it's slow at work and I look at houses around the area I mentioned.

A crappy two story house off State was $250K, I shit you not. And you'd be spending about $7K fixing it up.

In a perfect world, a house opens up on Pauline or Potter off Main when I am in the right financial state. Potter is where I tailgate for games so that'd be special.

the original comment suggested he'd need $150K for the downpayment. If he can find something for $250K, the standard 20% down means he needs $50K. That should be manageable. He'd just have to live very frugally for a few years.

I have spent two academic years living off of State in the heart of the athletic campus -- the houses here (at least the one's I've been to) are typical student housing garbage and you probably don't want to be a grown man with a family dealing with that type of noise. I'd love to stay in Ann Arbor or move back in a few years (now that I have graduated) but it would not be in this neighborhood if I do.

you can do it.   among the many sayings we had in the locker room there in ann arbor included one you are probably familiar with:  "what the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve"

don't forget to find a mrs. WD along the way.  go blue.

I always wanted to be a doctor but I decided it was easier to marry one instead.

Edit: Forgot the see yourself in 10 years bit. In ten years I see myself as a trophy husband, unfortunately my wife does not support my dream. I guess I'll just have to aim to move up from a Director to VP or C-Suite which doesn't seem nearly as much fun.
