OT- what do you do when you travel for business?

Submitted by sheepdog on
Friends- I travel some for business, maybe 16-18 weeks per year. Most of my business is conducted during the day so I tend to have a lot of nights free. Im not the strip club type so I usually find a decent restaurant bar, get a glass of wine and scroll MgoBlog.... Im doing it right now in Denver, Co, two deep and low on content. What do you do and where do you go? What restaurants, activities do you do to keep yourself preoccupied?

you guys are lucky. I always travel with coworkers and my company is notoriously cheap about carpooling, so I get stuck doing the dinner then hotel thing

I travel to Houston 5-10 times per year for work. I like to explore the bars and restaurants in the Montose area with the corporate card. Usually it's flooding, hurricane'ing, or miserably humid when I visit so that limits my outdoor activities.

I am also in Houston a lot during the year and have a house near the Montrose area (Memorial Park area)...You'll have to let me know when you're there, as you mentioned the weather is hot so the best things to do are play sports (hockey, volleyball, rock climbing, waterskiing, etc) and drink!

Great city! My favorite area of town is probably Rice Village. Places like Local Foods and Crave Cupcakes are gems.

I've also found a few Mexican bakeries that are off the chain. One of them is in a depressed neighborhood, but ... WOW! ... the baked goods were incredible. I always have to grab some goodies for my wife before heading to the airport.

liked to conduct 'interviews' with escorts while on the road...many, many escorts

I agree with the poster on finding an event in town. Sporting events are my favorite. I Uber to whatever arena the game is at. It’s always easy to scalp a single ticket right before game time, sometimes really great seats. College hoops, NBA, MLB, NHL, I’ve probably seen 40 different teams over 20+ years. Met some great people sitting at the games also.

I will also look up old friends or college or law school classmates as well and go out to dinner with them. Life is all about experiences and relationships. For the love of god don’t spend it sitting in the room.

There are actually moments where I kind of wish I had to travel extensively, but as I work for aregional utility, the biggest pain in the ass for me is a drive from my downriver hovel to Macomb County or - rarely - the thumb. I am a huge fan of exploring the local eats for lunch and dinner on those rare occasions though.

I don't really do anything at night except catch up on emails with a game on TV in the background. I do eat pretty well on the company dine but rarely drink on it. I should probably start taking advantage of the hotel fitness centers since I've got nothing better to do. I check MGoBlog a lot. My life is pretty boring. But I'm not going to lie...I like the alone time.

my wife doesn't like fish, so I always try it on the road. Had a decent grilled walleye tonight with green beans and baby Redskins. I'm also jealous of those who travel to big league cities. The best I could reasonably hope for would be a Monday night game at Lambeau.

I’m a beer tourist. When traveling for work, I like to find the best local brews (and food if possible) and get the taste of the town.

I’ve also been known to splurge if there is a local sporting event going on. Went to Boston for the first time last May. Caught a Sox game one night and Celtics playoff game the next.

I’m also a history buff, so I try to explore towns from the angle, especially when I’m on the east coast.

You hang the "change sheets" sign on the doorknob and wank yourself to sleep holding a picture of Beyonce. And Kanye and Kim. Then you claim "famous foursome!" And oversleep the free breakfast.

I kid, I kid.

Was just in San Diego and went to 8 different breweries. The time before that when I was there I went to 9. So yeah, I pretty much try as much beer as I possibly can. Glad that there’s something called Uber.

If you have even an acquaintance in the area look them up. Even if that person is busy you'll get some good tips. Likewise for a client you like, especially if it's one that won't make you be on all evening talking biz.

If you're a runner that's a great way to get to know a city and spot stuff to do later.

If there's nothing interesting going on I'll just go for a run for a mental break, order some room service and plug away at work to make things easier for when I return or the next trip.

It’s one of my favorite parts of the job! Granted, I only travel 7-10 times a year, usually for 3-4 days each.

It’s the perfect amount for me personally. It gives me a break from the office, allows me to see new places, and meet new people. Sometimes, I can extend the trip by a few days to do some sightseeing or have the wife join me for a mini vacation at half the cost.

Plus, it’s allowed me to rack up enough miles to pay for flights on my actual vacations!

Being a big college sports fan, I always try to check out the local college town (there almost always is one) and get a feel for the campus vibe.

And check out the football stadium of course.  Even post 9-11 you can often go in the stadiums.  (Michigan is one of the worst about not letting you go in to the stadium.)

I've been to these out-of-the-way (for me) campuses on business trips, that I probably would not have been to otherwise:

USC, ASU, Stanford, Texas, Minnesota, Georgia, Clemson, S. Carolina, NC State, James Madison, Cincinnati, Pitt, Syracuse, Harvard, Yale, Brown.

shows like air crash investigations or crime documentaries before flights, alone at the hotel. (Not kidding). some how, they are kind of relaxing.

I am traveling right now for work. Sadly, I am in a dry (no booze) Middle East country. So basically, instead of having a beer after work and chatting with other weary travelers about nonsense, which I love, I will sit in my hotel GOING FUCKING CRAZY...

Maybe I should have been clearer all these years while being insufferable on here... In my work life, which accounts for maybe 85-90% of my waking hours, I am very serious and boring. I come here to let all that sarcasm and cynicism that builds up all day flow from my body. :-D

I figured out way too late in my work travel days that staying active is critical (where feasible, of course). It’s really easy to go back to the hotel and get room service or order something in or go to the nearest restaurant and just gorge yourself. I was much happier when I took the time to work out, even if only briefly, despite my tired state. I let myself get really unhealthy and fall into some terrible habits and use travel as an excuse. Like someone above said, a run or bike ride (most places have rentals) is a great way to see a city.

And I’m not being sarcastic. I travel about 75% if the time and rarely find myself with either the downtime or the energy to explore much. My day is usually spent at one of our business units and then I’m catching up on email at night. Every once in a while I end up with an extra half day someplace like Hong Kong to explore, but that’s the exception. While I’m a little envious of those that can squeeze in some fun, I’m probably mostly just burned out from never being home. Or I’m just lame... which is also a strong possibility.
