OT: What's Worse? 2007 Patriots (18-1) or GSW Losing This Year?

Submitted by BursleyBaitsBus on

I'm kind of in awe of how well Billy Donovan got OKC playing right now. Also in shock at how poor GSW is playing. So much for the small ball line up.

I guess this would be worse. 73-9 in the regular season to not even make it to the Finals? Yikes.

On a side note, the NBA playoffs in both conferences have suddenly gotten super interesting given how many blowouts we've seen this year.

The 2002 Red Wings could've challenged for wins and points records, but Scotty Bowman started resting guys as soon as he knew they had the conference and President's Trophy in hand.  It almost backfired in the first round when they looked flat the first 2.5 games, but they were a healthy team through their entire run.

They should've shut Curry down the last couple weeks of the season.  Finishing first or second in the conference doesn't matter when their lineup is healthy.  The series isn't over yet, but I don't see them winning a Game 6 in OKC.

What the GSW are doing is down right awful, so I'm not downplaying that at all. They're sucking and choking it up lol...

BUT, it's a joke when people say the regular season record doesn't mean anything if they don't win the championship. Again, it's not good, but the season record is still incredibly good, and will be remembered and honored until it's broken, which may be never.

Miami went 14-0? I had forgotten they played fewer games.

Still, Patriots were not the only team to go undefeated. Warriors had the best % in basketball history. Patriots are tied.

AND, the way GS won their games was ridiculous - so many over before the 4th quarter even bagan. I can't remember and don't care to research the comparisson, but this GS season, on a game-to-game basis, is something I've never seen at all. I'm sure NE had many blowouts, but I remember many teams that went through their season with lots of blowouts (Kurt Warner's Rams, for example). I've never seen it in the NBA like I have this year.

I still stand by my statement.

Lukewarm take: neither are that big of a deal. Pro sports is hard, one-game elimination playoffs (football) can be fluky, and the NBA is pretty stacked with talent right now. Tough matchup for GSW.

Golden State would be worse. Best record of all time and losing a best of seven series in your conference is worse than best record of all time and barely losing a one game championship game.

Golden State. A bad day in football during the playoffs means your season is over. In a seven game series, you have ample time to adjust. The team I saw last night looked like it was falling apart... And that was before the Thunder broke it open. Warriors have no excuse.

The situation for Golden State is worse. In football, if you have one bad night in the postseason, your season is over. It's much more excusable in that situation if you don't win it all.

Golden State has a seven game series in which they are able to adjust to what Oklahoma City is doing. And they have been getting run out of the arena.

Yeah my thoughts exactly.

I hold no ill will as a whole for Golden State. If they come back and win it all, whatever. But Draymond Green is a total asshat who continues to embody everything about the little brother philosophy.

Would not mind seeing him lose.

I was rooting for warriors bc I didn't see anyone else beating the cavs. now I could see okc pulling it off the way they're rolling, and Donovan has shown that they're versatile enough to reinvent themselves on the fly. PLUS Toronto is looking like if they carry this momentum into game 5, the cavs might not even make it to the finals! I am so down with neither Draymond nor LeBron making the finals this year.

GSW had become a little to smug for my liking and now they face adversity for the first time. They are not responding well, they still have time, but so far they look soft. They were lucky in last years finals with Love and Irving out and it's possible they get 'asterisked' over time if they limp out of this series.
Also, before the fan boys jump in I like Kerr and Curry. However, Green is acting like a bully who just got punched in the mouth for the first time and wants to take his ball home.

18-1 probably feels worse because you were undefeated up until that point. However, I think GSW are worse because they have a 7 game series to right their mistakes. They can blow game 1 and still come back and have chances in the series.  In football, it's one game. Anything can happen, anything can go wrong in that one game.

I just logged into this site for the first time in....two years(?) to say if anyone knows bust it's someone with a handle referencing Tyrone Butterfield. "Username checks out" is a colossal understatement there.

I hate GS, but they haven't even lost yet.  If their year has proven anything it's that winning 3 games in a row isn't exactly shocking for them.

Defending champs (returned just about all the key players from the year before), undefeated heading into the Final Four - trying to be the first team since IU in '76 to go undefeated, crushed just about everyone during the regular season, and then lost to a team they beat by 30 in the championship game the year before.

This is a bit different. Patriots were beaten by an upstart team with a good plan of attack and some serious luck (i.e. helmet catch). In contrast, everyone has known OKC was GS' main competition all year long (along with the Spurs).

For me, the Pats losing was worse becase: A- Brady (in the pre-internet days, id fight nayone who thought Henson was better than Brady, but I dont have the stone tablets I chiseled my words into to prove it. I wanted to Browns to take Brady, instead we got Spergeon Wynn). and B: have always wanted to see an NFL run the table (ever since i was a kid, its been a fascination of mine, dont know why)

If the Warriors lose, I'll will revel in the schadenfreude. You can tell a lot about teams/players when things are going really weel, and these guys were some smug sunzabeaches. They really thought they were the cats ass, and had it all figured out, from ownership on down.  Every time people were metaphorically blowing Steph or talking about how they were "ZOMG best team EVAR!!11!!!1!!11!!" I was hoping theyd get punched in the mouth, have to deal with an injury or whatever to see how they responded.

Most here were to young, but for guys here there are of age that loss was devastating. Defending Champs, Undefeated and possibly the best team ever assembled in college basketball to loose to the team you man handled a year before.

GSW are showing signs of crumbling. And they can't get out of there own way and keep making mistakes.

Is worse. In the NFL playoffs, one game moves you forward. NBA, the best team typically emerges from a 7 game set.

All the hype, ESPN creating a separate page for Steph Curry, this was supposed to be the most untouchable team in NBA history.

It also took New York the most ridiculous freaking play in NFL history to get it done.

I guess it depends how you mean worse.

It makes the Warriors look much worse that they got blasted and outplayed for two games. If they go out before the finals which is looking like a probably that's worse for the history books.

If you are talking about more gut wrenching though it's the Patriots. They were a few plays away from winning the Super Bowl and completing that perfect season. It would only be worse for the Warriors if they manage to make the next round and go out

People tend to overreact to what are perceived as major upsets, but at the end of the day, matchups matter. You can be an all-time great team (and by any objective measure, this Warriors team is, as were the 07 Pats) and get knocked out if you face a team capable of exploiting your weaknesses. In this case, if you were building a team to face the Warriors, you'd want length and athleticism, which would give you the ability to switch most everything against the Warriors' offensive attack. OKC has that in spades (the same reason the 96 Bulls would have success against this team). There's a reason OKC should have taken 2 of 3 from the Warriors in the regular season, and OKC is a far better team today than they were then. If you ignore the 73-9 record, what you're really left with is two equally great teams, except one has pretty major lineup advantages.

Losing as GSW may would be more jarring because it would be over a 7-game series.  That Patriots SB loss was a crazy couple of plays plus the Giants playing inspired, dominant defense.  But the Patriots had beaten them only a couple weeks earlier, and when you are playing single-elimination sports an "upset" is less surprising.  But the Warriors were demonstrably better than OKC all season, and yet are losing these games by double-digits, with the final score sometimes even downplaying the dominance by the Thunder.

Personally, the crazy thing about this is that i was telling all my buddies GS is not going to the finals, and are not even the best team in the NBA THIS year, let alone all-time.

Whats crazy about it though, is that i was saying San Antonio was going to the finals, would beat GS, and were better than GS.

So, i was 'kinda' right?  maybe not?  Oh well, just beat LeBron.

Every team with the most wins record in all 4 sports will have lost in the playoffs, the Wings, the Mariners, the Pats, and now the Warriors.

Swazi

May 25th, 2016 at 1:00 PM ^

The Mariners also ran into the then current Yankee dynasty, however.  GSW are the defending champs and only lost 9 times all season.

One gets the shit kicked out of them repeatedly in the conference finals, the other loses one game by 3 points on a fluke play in the Super Bowl.

If the Patriots and Giants played 10 times, the Pats win 8. If the Warriors and Thunder play 10 times, the Thunder win 7. This isn’t even a question, super embarrassing for Golden State to be sniffing their own farts the whole season and then get exposed.

is giving them fits. Billy Donovan could become the second coach in basketball history to get at least one NCAA title and an NBA title, after Larry Brown

I'm still in therapy!!!  My only trip to the Super Bowl, expecting to witness history.  Went from the highest of high's when Moss caught the late TD, to leaving to chants of 18-1.  Went to drown my pain at a local "Folk Dancing" establishment.  Every TV had NFL Network or ESPN, Tyree in a constant loop.  The hot little 20 somethin somethin couldn't put me out of my misery.

It's not GSW's fault, Curry isn't 100%, plus OKC is playing their best ball all year.  Brady wasn't hurt int he super bowl so the comparison isnt the same.
