OT: [Weekend Drinking Thread] Can someone rec a great, somewhat easy to find craft beer?

Submitted by chuck bass on

What are you guys drinking tonight / this weekend?

I had a six of Hopslam two weeks ago. It was good, but looking for variety, and not even sure it's still on shelves (?). I'm in Metro Detroit with easy access to stores that carry most everything. And I don't really have a preference, I like to dabble.

Sidebar: I made a bourbon thread back in December and got some great suggestions. I've been sipping Eagle Rare for the last 5-6 weeks. Terrific stuff. Thanks!

I bought the beer last night.  She's unemployed and has 4 months left on her severance.  I helped her with her resume / cover letter yesterday.  She's always at my house anyway, my wife and my ex-wife are besties.

If you're in metro Detroit I'd recommend going to the Founders Detroit tap room and getting some Reds Rye in bottles. They just released it this week in bottles for the first time in a whiiile (it's got a really short shelf life that makes distributing unfeasible) and they're selling a limited amount before it goes away again. Otherwise I'd look for anything Old Nation, Transient (not sure if their distro has gotten to the east side of the state yet), Oddside is doing well with their Dank Juice line, and anything that comes up with good beer advocate reviews. It's hard to get too specific without knowing your favorite styles. I could suggest a sour (I'm a big New Holland Incorrigible fan and lately Shorts has been making great ones too), but if you don't like sours you'll probably hate it.

Lots of great recommendations on this thread and many things that I have had and enjoyed. M43 doesn't seem to have gotten down to Ohio yet so I will look for it on my next trip to Michigan. I am eager to try the Boss Tweed.

In terms of hoppy beers, I have recently enjoyed Lord Hobo's Boom Sauce and Troegs Blizzard of Hops (somewhat different in style--Boom Sauce is closer to Hopslam). I don't know if Jackie O's has distribution in Michigan, but Mystic Mama is also pretty good.Elysian Space Dust is good and pretty widely distributed.

There have been tons of good suggestions so far! Many of my favorite regularly available IPAs have already been suggested. My two favorites currently are Perrin 98 Problems, New Holland Mad Hatter and 51K IPA from Black Rocks. All are excellent Michigan IPAs that are more on the citra-side if IPAs that are my current favorite hop profile. They should be available pretty much anywhere and are around 10 bucks a 6 pack.

lots of tasty beers out there beyond the basics like Hopslam and M43.  Expand your horizon.
