OT - University of Michigan plans $300M+'innovation center' at failed jail site
It is a freep article so I will not link. I found it interesting what everyone else's thoughts were. I'm a big Detroit homer, so maybe only I care.
"The University of Michigan plans to open an "innovation center" in downtown Detroit on the site of the aborted Wayne County jail project as part of a $300 million-plus development, according to three sources close to the plan.
The innovation center will be a development partnership between real estate mogul Stephen Ross, a Detroit native and U-M alumnus, and Detroit businessman Dan Gilbert. The project will include a hotel, and total costs could be $500 million to $750 million over time if other buildings are constructed, including housing."

I didn't read the Freep story but the Mlive story said that it is a research and graduate education building for UM students in artificial intelligence, sustainability, cybersecurity and financial technology.

Sounds like a great project glad to see that investment being made

The Marxist in me says Michigan, as a state, will become a personal sandbox for the rich before long.
It is a paradise, and along all the great lakes there will be no land not owned by someone with a zillion-dollar mansion on it, and the interior will be nothing but golf course and other playthings only the rich can afford. The Little guys will be able to drive through it--and gawk at how beautiful the rich people live and have made it.
Detroit will be the seat of it all--a coming sign of wall street and corporate greed and takeover. The sports stadiums will be filled with millionaires and no one else, save for the tickets they donate to their armies of personal valets.
It is coming, people--Detroit, once a glorious example of the People working and controlling their own destiny and electing their own people, will become a shining example of how the Rich will make a plaything out of the country.
Detroit is already probably in line for a Trump-Putin joint venture tower.

you're kidding, right?

I'm sure us rich people will build some golf courses along the lakes too. And no, you're not invited to play them.

what you say is not out of the realm of possibility, Pharaoh. Yet, what you say is also not predetermined either.
I don't believe it will happen that way

So... how much are the city and state chipping in for this? Better than another stadium at least.

I remember the beautiful rendering of the MLS soccer stadium they were proposing to build at that sight before they totally shit the bed by adding the Ford's to the deal and changing the proposal to Ford Field!
It's too bad that didn't work out.

The building design (picture in Crains Detroit) is hideous.

eye of the beholder-certainly more appealing than a jail

No, that's bad architecture. It would get laughed out of NY or SF.

Ummm... really? NY? The entire city is a bunch of vertical rectangles, talk about a bland skyline. Not a fan of that city, never have been.

Bland skyline? Are u joking? It's literally the measuring stick for skylines. Vertical rectangles?
Hopefully, Bedrock will get better architects, but I'm not holding my breath.

It's not awful but meh. Detroit used to attract world-class architects. Fortunately, they saved most of it and are renovating or have renovated them but the new stuff is pretty weak.

I was part of a rather large cell door and frame replacement project in the Wayne County jail, oh...... about 13 years ago. Memories.... when we got the project the gents from Detroit Door and Hardware took us to lunch at Fishbones... The next time we had a site meeting they took us to Sweet Georgia Browns. Not long after that Detroit Door and Hardware pretty much went belly up and we never got paid in full for the job.
Glad i'm not in that business anymore. Cutthroat bullshit.
