OT: UNC player suspended for selling Nike shoes

Submitted by bronxblue on

Title basically says it all, but here's the article.

Minor violations and all that, but still, UNC football has been breaking lots of rules recently.  That said, I'm firmly on the "pay the players" boat, so when I see some guys try to profit even a bit off the very lucrative licensing deals these non-profit schools have with billion-dollar apparel conglomerates, I want to give them kudos.

Not a lot of people could pull off UNC's colors on shoes. I think they were lucky to find buyers and the NCAA should laud their persistence and resourcefulness.

"Accountability is an important core principle in this program."

The University of North Carolina itself has made a mockery of "core principles" for years now, so it's hardly surprising that its athletes fall short when it comes to observing the rules.

You stopped being anything but a troll  whe you started making the same claim people weren't talking about um shoes, on both sides of the post where a guy brought it to light.

Unless more comes out, for all we know some sprinter from the women's track team left college early 6 years ago  went back home to NC and asked that guy if he would buy her shoes.

Phillips (the owner of a Raleigh, NC shoe store called ShoeCastleTees) told UNC that he had not bought gear from UNC student-athletes in the past, according to the emails. But he mentioned that he had bought school issued shoes from student-athletes at Michigan, University of California Berkely, and Marquette.

That's a really random hodgepodge of schools for a Raleigh shoe store owner to get ahold of. It looks like he is saying that at some point in the past (time unknown), he bought shoes from players at these other schools, including Michigan. I would speculate that these other schools were in much smaller batches as it looks like he got ahold of 13 UNC players as he is based locally. I can't really see the Michigan or Marquette or Berkeley squads making a road trip to sell shoes, or even mailing them out to him.

What we don't know is:

1) if he's just saying that to make it appear that he felt it was okay (but I would take him at his word)

2) When this happened

3) Who it was, and more importantly if they were current players or former players. For instance if Say Wheatley was given a pair of sneaks and then transferred. He might already have several pairs and not much use for them anymore. It's my guess that former players can do what they'd like with their gear.

That being said if I were compliance in the AD at Michigan I'd get ahold of the shoe store owner and see if he had any more specifics on the michigan guy/girl(s), ie when and who.

They will be found out, & if they're still on the team, they will face the consequences.  You can bet your ass it won't be covered up.

Now what, dickhead?

There are a few problems with the blog in its current format, but none of them are worse than the pervasive trolls.

Nervous that your POS head coach is going down, tarnishing every single thing you hold near and dear to your heart? That would explain you lashing out on a rival’s blog. Here’s an idea, get your own fucking house in order before commenting on someone else’s, OK sport?

P.S. Elegibilty? What a maroon.

I never crucified the players. And this blog is known for it's stance that players get shit on under the current power structure. Penalized for the bad decisions of the millionaires responsible for keeping them in line with the rules of even richer millionaires.

So if it turns out Harbaugh:

- Knew about a local establishment regularly buying gear from players in exchange for tattoos and a place to chill and maybe puff a bowl and play Call of Duty

- Lied to the NCAA about it

- Had coverage from the AD until the heat forced their hand

Then we can talk. And I might even agree that OSU penalties were harsh relative to what else we've seen in "amateur" athletics.

Until then shut the fuck up.

Says the guy who writes, “your are either illiterate...”

Dude, you are the epitome of the buckeye fan base. Or in language you can understand, “your are an idiot.” Now go fuck your sister and let the non-inbred adults continue the discussion.

We can have that discussion after we discuss that fact that all of OSU’s claimed national championships save one were achieved by coaches who were proven as cheaters.

Bo never won a national championship but ran a clean program, unlike Woody, Tressel, and Meyer.

Harbaugh will win plenty, but will not cheat to short cut it.

I know you are sad because your program has been proven yet again to be a fraud. And that is why you are trolling people on a rival website.

Does anyone follow Jordan Poole on Instagram? He sells stuff all the time, I’ve always wondered if he’s going to get in trouble.

I assume he’s considered this, but I always wonder.

Worth mentioning for my mgoblog brothers that don’t have Instagram - he sells Yeezy’s (Kanye West shoes), Van’s, and a lot of clothes (some Michigan stuff).

If players violated rules, they need to be disciplined.

Including our own.

Unlike MSU and OSU, Michigan fans believe guilty people should be held accountable.
