OT: UM grad Lori Lightfoot on verge of being elected Chicago's mayor

Submitted by ChicagoB1GRed on April 1st, 2019 at 6:04 PM

She'd be Chicago's first black female mayor, not to mention first openly gay candidate, and win out over a 14 field including yet another Chicago Daley and her final opponent (another black female_ who's also the head of the Cook county Democratic party.

That's a lot of glass and other ceilings to break.

Not without her own critics, though.

It has been fascinating to watch the campaign here in the Chicago area. The polls predict Lightfoot will win the election. Politics in Illinois are fascinating. Because much of the state is heavily Democratic Party & "blue," it makes very clear that a lot of politics has to do with power and influence, irrespective of political party affiliation. This area also seems to have no end of corruption.

The population of the Chicago metropolitan area is 9,472,676. Cook County is very blue. The collar counties (Will, DuPage, Kane, Lake) are all blue, albeit lesser so than Cook. The population of Illinois in total is 12,740,000. That means that almost 75% of the state, population wise, is blue. Geographically, you are correct. But even outside of the city of Chicago, a majority of the population in Illinois is blue, just not as starkly. I haven't analyzed the whole country, but as an example, California is majority "red" geographically, yet strongly "blue" in terms of population. There were some fascinating maps after the last presidential election that showed this phenomenon, and how much major metro areas skewed blue, while, vast stretches of the country are red.

I fully confess to knowing pretty much nothing about this or her except what's in the OP. So my opinion is meaningless. But it's very cool to hear about her.

Also, Lightfoot is a really cool name. Like, Name of the Year cool. And alliteration adds another level to Lori Lightfoot's laurels.

When I lived in St. Charles, IL, located in a county that borders Cook County (Chicago), there was a push to have residents in neighboring counties pay Cook County taxes.  The City politicians assumed everyone benefited by visiting the city, so why not pay taxes.

The plan was soundly defeated.  Something something taxation without representation...

If she doesn't play "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" at her inauguration, she is missing an opportunity at great subtle humor...

I'm sure she'll do about as well as every other Chicago mayor.  Looking forward to higher taxes and still increasing the budget gap somehow.

Right winger disdain for colleges always surprise me. Why make an account and actively participate since you hate Michigan's liberalness so much? You can always not go to Michigan for college and go to one of those bible thumping schools like Liberty that espouse your bullshit.

you are confusing the temporary mosaic covenant with our existing NT covenant of grace.  i would love to have a very interesting theological discussion with you about it, but out of comity with our mgoblog brothers/sisters it will have to wait for some other time/forum.

It’s funny to me that right wingers always like to play victim on college campuses yet go to said colleges. They have options to go elsewhere, but they don’t. Then they graduate and act like Michigan was the worst place ever bc their views (most of which probably deserve derision) were in the minority.

sopwith, with genuine respect, do a little internet sleuthing and start with the riots, shutting down right-leaning speeches with violence, threats of violence, or exorbitant 'public safety fees' and also more recent attack(s) of right-leaning folks just at UC berkeley.  antifa is a thing, those are left-leaning violent extremists.  pretty much every riot, every burnt car, every smashed business window is by some group on campus or off that isn't right-leaning.
