OT: UM grad Lori Lightfoot on verge of being elected Chicago's mayor
She'd be Chicago's first black female mayor, not to mention first openly gay candidate, and win out over a 14 field including yet another Chicago Daley and her final opponent (another black female_ who's also the head of the Cook county Democratic party.
That's a lot of glass and other ceilings to break.
Not without her own critics, though.

and i bitched about the Feb election too. what a big f-in waste of money. an election in Feb and Apr, especially after having one in Oct. i'm shocked at the budget deficits; truly shocked, i tell ya.
There was an election in November, not October.
The $2-3m expenditure on an additional election every four years is unlikely to be the culprit of $25b out-year budget deficits but you do you.
Rahm on his way out...
My polling place is a school literally outside my front door. I guess the least I can do is vote tomorrow morning.
No politics...but shockingly no Libertarian in the final runoff
Well, my precinct has yet to hit 20 voters this morning
Maybe, maybe not. She's got some serious opposition, and for legitimate reasons, from the left.
Either choice is an improvement on Rahmbo.
Also, this thread is full of some serious Chicago hot takes.
Most polls had Lori up by 25+ so I wouldn't call it serious opposition anymore.
I remember once upon a time when no politics was still a thing on Mgoblog. Good times.
Not applicable to liberals carrying multiple labels.
I apologize for generating what anyone would consider a political post here....being a rival fan poster I really try to mind my manners.
I saw this as more of a UM grad groundbreaker case, as the two candidates were pretty close politically.
Credit your fellow MGoBoarders, it was a pretty civil conversation for the most part. One reason I chime in here from time to time in my own Cornhusker way.
Meanwhile, NU's AD has made a few pretty good hires lately in Frost and Hoiberg. GBR!
Will Rahm have the opportunity for a final profanity-laced tirade before leaving office?
Jussie Smollett gifted him that opportunity so yes.
If I could, I'd vote for Toni Preckwinkle.
I wish her good luck. Maybe now that a Democrat is in charge she can get some gun laws passed so the murders stop.
Yes indeed. From Massillon, OH and went to UM undergrad and U of C law school.
She is also a Michigan sports mega-fan. Almost assuredly the first big-city mayor that reads MGoBlog.
She will be a great mayor for many reasons.
