OT: Tim Miles hired as men's Nebraska Basketball Coach

good for Nebraska... at least they are trying to become relevant in the basketball world
In my opinion. He was at North Dakota State when I went to school there and I used to watch them practice sometimes, fun to watch. Very high energy and knowledgable from a distance. Some of my friends used to play for his assistants too. I'm excited for him and will watch closely, but hopefully Michigan still rolls them!

Will have his work cut out for him. Nebraska is not close to alot of basketball hotbeds (St Louis and KC being the closest, both pretty good though) and doesn't have the tradition of their football program to help in recruiting. They've only been to the tournament 6 times (last in 1998) and have never won a game in it, so their history is almost as bad as N'W. They lose some of their top players so it's going to be a rebuilding process I believe. Gonna have to develop his players extremely well to compete in this conference.
If Creighton can regularly make the NCAA tournament, I don't see why Nebraska can't. It's harder to recruit there, yes, but with the facilities upgrade they're getting and the right coaching staff, it can be done.
I never said it couldn't be done. But Creighton doesn't have the in-conference competition the B1G does. The MVC is a good mid major conference but the bottom of the that conference would finish below the bottom of the B1G. Not saying Creighton isn't good, but it's easier to maintain success at a mid major when it's the same teams at the top competing year-in and year out. I think it's harder to pull a major conference team out of the muck than a mid major. A good coach and a good player make a bigger difference each level you go down. Wheras in the B1G, there are always going to be good coaches and players. Nebraska can be a good program, just like any program can be. I'm just saying it's going to be tough with no tradition to build off of.
Creighton gets a steady diet of tomato cans, whiile Nebraska now gets a steady diet of B1G teams. Also, Creighton's conference tournament is juuuust a bit easier to win than the B1G Tournament.
You speak of Creighton like it's a major program that happens to play in a small conference. Creighton was a tomato can at one time. Building and maintaining a strong program isn't easy in any conference.
I think this could be a Brady Hoke like hire. Very under the radar, with surprising results.
I don't see this being a quick turnaround for CSU. Brady had tradition and some pretty good players to lean on to turn the program in the right direction in one season. Miles has no tradition and mediocre players in a very strong league.

Facilities absolutely help a basketball program, and I'm thrilled that we've built/are building ours.
But it seems like facilities equaling kids moving far, far away from home is more of a football phenomenon.

Yeah...but alot of schools in the B1G have good facilities. This will help them beat the N'Ws for recruits. But they're not going to start beating out Illinois, Baylor, Michigan, MSU, Kansas etc for recruits. Would we be recruiting as well as we are if we weren't winning? No. The facilities help, but tradition and success help more. The Cornhuskers lack both. Location is still key no matter what your facilities. You are more likely to get a quality kid from farther away if you have good facilities than if you had bad, but that doesn't make it likely.

He seems like a likeable guy but this quote about recruiting was kind of funny to me.
Remember when PSU joined the Big 10 they poured a lot of resources into basketball including building their new arena. For awhile they were relevant but building a strong basketball program in the Big Ten without much history behind it is just going to be terribly difficult.

PSU should have never left Rec Hall. It's a perfect venue for a not-so-good basketball team. I don't think they would sell it out either, but the BJC is like a funeral home. Actually, it was louder for Joe's funeral than any PSU basketball game ever will be.
I can't see any way Nebraska ever becomes relevant in basketball. It is so far removed from anything that would entice a baller to go there it just won't happen. Even at that, why would a kid pick them over K-State if they want to live in the middle of nowhere? They will always just get the crumbs after Kansas and K-State get done.
