OT: Tablets--iOS, Android, or Windows?

Submitted by Blue Balls Afire on February 15th, 2024 at 11:40 AM

Dear MGoHiveMind.  I'm in the market for a new tablet.  Would love to get your thoughts, especially regarding the OS.  What tablet do you use?  What would you buy next?

I've been using an ipad for the last dozen or so years, mostly for media consumption, and I used to have a windows tablet for work and productivity, mostly OneNote.  I'd like my next tablet to handle both.  I primarily watch YouTube and surf the web on the media consumption side, while I would need digital inking ability on the work side.  What has your experience been with windows, ios, and android tablets?  Which is the best OS for tablet?  Any recommendations?  Much appreciated.

I run OneNote on my iPad with no issues. The handwriting to text feature with the apple pencil is great. That said, I have nothing negative to say about Android or Windows; its just what my company bought me.

I bought the S9+, theoretically to do continuing education on, but have not used it a ton. Came with case and pen. The pen works great, pressure sensitive, magnetic to the back of the tablet, seems to be very good writing recognition. Great productivity tools built in, much more so than any other android tablet, I believe.

I think tablets are a two horse race, Apple and Samsung.

i'm an ecosystem guy so I enjoy the seamless interoperability of apple's stuff since I have an iPhone and a MacBook.  I'd avoid Amazon's stuff unless you're on a budget. Samsung's Galaxy tablets have great reviews from friends. and while not a tablet, i know a bunch of people who LOVE their Microsoft Surface's in the hybrid category, if you happen to be looking to replace a lightweight laptop

I went the rounds with Android tablets, but eventually upgraded to a Surface Pro - I'm extremely happy with it, since it's a fully fledged PC with all of the touch/pen/tablet features.

There won't be much of a difference between the varying options on the media consumption side. Pay attention to size and screen specs, but you'll be able to find good options across any OS. Not much to differentiate in that space.

With productivity, I think it comes down to how much and how often you plan to use your tablet. Are you envisioning taking hand-written notes with a stylus? If so, do you need those notes to sync up to a desktop/laptop somewhere? In my experience, the productivity angle for a tablet just isn't there. For almost any productivity task, a laptop is a superior experience.

Last thing to consider is overall OS integration with other devices you own. What type of phone do you use? What type of laptop? If Apple, then an iPad is going to make sense because it will fit in seamlessly with everything else. If Android or Windows, then an iPad may not make as much sense.

Personally, I have an Android phone and Windows laptop. I have a Google Pixel Tablet (Android). I don't try to do anything productivity-related on the tablet, so it's primarily media-consumption. The other thing I like about the Pixel Tablet is the included dock. The dock charges the tablet well, and serves as a good home hub and music player. It's very practical and just works well.

I've avoided Apple products for various reasons. Work phone and play/browsing tablet are Androids (Samsung Galaxy and Tab) seamlessly synching contact and browsing info. Latest Android releases are absolutely rock solid. Galaxy Tabs have a nice pen with drawing and note making functionality. The Dex add-on interface is meh, however.

Work PCs and laptop are Windows 10/11 using DropBox for multi-location file sharing and access. I have found Windows 10 to have fewer weird problems than 11, oddly enough.

Been looking at the latest Surface Pros. They seem like great portable devices that exploit Windows 11 to the maximum extent.

I am, for the most part, anti-Apple.  I believe their products are overpriced and overperform.  That being said, the iPad is, imo, the best tablet out on the market.  Not by a lot, but for the price point and power it has, Android has yet to match up.  The new Google Pixel tablets are pretty nice machines, and if you're anti-apple like me, that's probably your best bet for an Android tablet.

As for Windows tablets I assume you're talking about a Surface.  Considering their capabilities, I don't really qualify them as a tablet, and more of a laptop.  They are fantastic, tbh.

Just got new iPad for Christmas, my 3rd one (bigger screen, more memory, but heavier).  I use it everyday, average probably 6 hours/day on it.  Use it to watch TV, YouTube & Rumble videos, NetFlix, for work use OneNote, Outlook, Teams, etc.  Would never consider anything else.

I use the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra with the keyboard book case - the case without a track pad.

I've used Android forever because for years I could get around the NHL App location blackout without a VPN - just use a location spoof app. I was still paying for the service just broke the blackout rules. ESPN+ is a little tougher tho.

Love the screen, video, and the Samsung Dex that allows me to have a Windows-like environment when I want it.

iPad for me.  I'm so used to the Apple products - if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I do have a second (work) phone that is an Android.  I don't have any issues with it - there are some features that I like better.  Got is so I wouldn't mix up work with play.
