OT: songs that draw a tear or make your cry

Submitted by WindyCityBlue on August 13th, 2022 at 10:48 PM

I’m just trying to get in as much OT action before the season begins. So what songs cultivate a strong emotional reaction with you? Weather that’s a few tears to full on crying.

Mine are:

1. Mother - Pink Floyd

2. Give me Something to Believe in - Poison

3. Philadelphia - Neil Young

I’m skipping several, but wanted to get the input from the MgoGlitterati.

So what say you MgoBoard?

14 year old me: Seasons in the Sun, Terry Jacks.

Adult me now, many years later, with kids: Cat's in the Cradle, Harry Chapin.

Ironically, both songs were from the same year, 1974.

Can’t believe nobody brought up the biggest tear jerker of all time-“Bring him home”, from Les Miserables. Colm Wilkinson version is unbelievable.

Kathy Mattea's "Where've you been?"  It's about finding and then losing someone, with the last stanza being about memory loss and dementia. Impossible not to tear up when I hear the song.

Rascal Flatts' "Why?" is about the suicide of a friend. It is incredibly beautiful.

The Star Spangled Banner, our National Anthem.     After serving in a war zone, losing brothers to hostile fire & losing even more to suicide after returning home...... It brings a tear to my eye every single time...... For all her faults, we live in the greatest nation on God's earth..... never take that for granted, freedom isn't free.

Vince Gill's "Go Rest High on that Mountain" with Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs. Vince wrote it for his brother who passed away and has been played at many funerals, especially when someone is taken way too young.

Even sadder is when Vince sang this at George Jones' funeral. He was so overcome with emotional he couldn't hold back the tears. Patty Loveless taking over for him, and then Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood rising to give support. is a moment that still gets me.

Recently, "Talking to the moon" by Bruno Mars. I heard it by chance with my 12 year old daughter a few days after the death of my mom. It brought us both to tears.

Lean On Me, by Bill Withers, because my dad and I shared that song and a good cry during one difficult drive in the late 70s. And Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, because I listened to it over and over, having many good cries, as I absorbed the fact that my mom was passing six years ago. Thanks for asking.

It's pretty cool to see the wide range of genres of music that emotionally touch people.

Really lends to the power of music in general and all that.

I don't really have any song that makes me tear up or cry but

Disturbed's cover of "The sound of silence" is really powerful.

It approaches the song at a much different angle in terms of delivery than Simon and Garfunkle and a version I also adore for different reasons.  I recommend everyone give it a listen.
