OT Red Rock BBQ

Submitted by jmdblue on

I wouldn't clog the board with this, but I asked the board for BBQ advice yesterday and a visit to Red Rock BBQ in Ypsi was the result so I thought I'd follow up.

The brisket was average (that doesn't mean it didn't taste good, just not outstanding).  Both the burnt ends and the brussels sprouts in bacon dressing were outstanding.  Good beer and bourbon selections.  The sauces were all good and the Carolina mustard sauce very good.  Didn't taste the GFs salad.  Nice room with good service.  We'll go back.

Yeah, this definitely couldn't have gone in yesterday's BBQ thread. New comments don't bump threads back up to the top or anything.

the west side. Plus, I can walk there but haven't been. Guess I need to stop by. Also my son (freshman at UM this fall) was supposed to work there but they haven't figured out their schedules yet. :-/ Btw, anyone with friends in Loch Alpine should stop by next Saturday for the neighborhood fireworks at the park.

You enjoyed it. The rock nachos are amazing as well, with selections of BBQ chicken, brisket, or pork you can top it with. Also, eating a salad at a BBQ joint is blasphemous.

Salt Lick is great for tourists but Franklin and La Barbecue have the better barbecue. If you don't want to stand in line or drive to Lockhart go to Black's in Austin or Stiles & Switch.

Either way BBQ north of the Mason-Dixon Line is no good and I think Central Texas is top dog. Of course I'm biased after 25 years in Austin.

The last time I was in Austin.

Salt Lick was my first initiation to Hill Country brisket (delicious with Shiner Bock).  Did make the drive south on subsequent trips (with an angry wife in tow).

Honestly think she would be more tolerant of another drive to Lockhart than standing in line outside of Franklin.

There are some fantastic BBQ places north of the Mason Dixon...but it depends on what you like.  I've noticed that "good BBQ" to people means overcooked, mushy, fall-off-the-bone meat, especially north of the Mason Dixon.

I'll cut you slack since you are new ; ) or there is a new restaurant I've never heard of?  Zingerman's Roadhouse BBQ is good but there are so many better things on the menu that are great, I would not go there specifically for BBQ. I don't find the meat pulled enough and the sauce that good.

Ann Arbor Country Club of Huron River Drive between A2 and Dexter. Would agree with your assessment. Overall solid, but not blown away by brisket.
