OT: Quick aside, how is Purdue not ranked??

Not that I am overly concerned about the fortunes of Purdue football, but they have two wins against - at the time - top 3 opponents. Even with a 6-3 record how can they not be ranked when teams like University of Texas San Antonio, Houston and Louisiana sneaking in there.

As fun as college football is, it is also incredibly stupid much of the time.

I get your point - it just shows how the system is measure of popular perception and not anywhere remotely close to a considered estimation of actual strength.

Part of the problem relates to how people vote. If their votes were reviewed and we saw how many so-called experts had voted for Iowa as #2 and others, it might have effect, but probably it won't happen. It is too good at stirring up clicks and views. Mel Kiper is well known for misses - bad misses but his schtick is stronger than ever.

They probably should be, but I think most people know Iowa is a paper tiger and was never really the #2 team in the country (unless they can come down with 6 INTs a game).

Yeah, I went and checked to see who Purdue lost to since I was sure there was a bad loss there...but home losses to Minnesota and Wisconsin and a road loss to Notre Dame..a road win at a then-Top 5 and a home win over a then-Top 5...they should be ranked anywhere in the 20-25 range but not after this weekend because they will not beat Ohio State in Columbus.

"At the time" rankings are not to be 100% discounted as they should be in the first few weeks of the season, but are sure close. Because even the current rankings still reflect those mere guesses as to whether a team is any good or not. See how overvalued MSU's and Alabama's win over Miami were. Same for Florida's close loss to Alabama and PSU's win over Wisconsin.

But even so, Purdue has played a good schedule and is at least a top 20 team.
