OT: Question for the Local Refs

Submitted by uncle leo on

Hey everyone, I am strongly debating working as a basketball ref on the side to make some money, probably doing some rec leagues or something lighter to start. I'm not sure if/when it will happen. Just wanted to ask everyone around here that has refed, and more specifically maybe done basketball, what it was like for you.

Is it worth the headache for the 75-100 a night you work?

No, don't do it.  They would have to pay me $1,000 per game to consider it again.  The parents, coaches, and kids our crazy even when I reffed years ago.  I was even threatened by a kid in a game.  I immediately T-d him up and then subsequently called 2 off the ball fouls on him in the next two minutes.

Why don't you find a nice church league softball team to keep score for $10 a game?

I officiate high school wrestling, and the positive experiances greatly outweigh the negative.  Obviously I could tell a horror strory or two, but overall I would highly recomend it.  The extra money is nice and contributing to the sport you love is even better.

As a middle school coach,  I witnessed some abhorrent behavior by other coaches.   Absolutely abhorrent.   I had two golden rules:  1.  do not disrepect the referees and 2. play through adversity without complaining.   Whenever a player felt slighted by a lack of a foul call, I reminded them of the 13 times they fouled opposing players without getting called.   I went out of my way to thank the referees for their service before and after each game.

Despite my coaching experience, I will probably start reffing once my children leave the nest.   Seems like good community service, a nice way to get exercise, and some extra beer money cash.

This is my 20th year as a soccer ref. Prefer 9 years old or younger or 16-18 year olds. Avoid the men’s leagues. Pregame is crucial and sets the tone for the whole night. It’s tough to beat the pay if you can handle some inevitable drama.

the parent that thinks their child is going D1.

In my experience, mostly girls soccer and football, you can spot D1 talent a mile away.

At my kid's high school, the parents that constantly yell at the refs are frequently banished to a far-off corner of the field.  The "normal" parents support that.  Please ref - the kids need you.  Screw the parents.
