OT: Pre-Season ][v][uppet Baby Games and other random ramblings.

There a somewhat growing notion that Michigan hasn't won many (and to some, any) big games recently. While I don't agree with that, I also won't waste time arguing against it. I'll instead take a different route. (Tl:dr people can skip to the ☆☆☆☆)

We all see the Pre-season team rankings, the lists of Top coaches, and Top whatever else that every off season. Somehow that's all forgotten at the end of said seasons, as if it doesn't matter to whichever narrative is trying to be pushed.

The B1G East is, in some circles, regarded as--top to bottom one of the top 3 toughest divisions in college football. Surely there has to be quite a few big games on the schedule. Anyhow, Michigan only lost "1" B1G game last year.

Because of this, the narrative changed to-- The only "big" B1G game Michigan had last year was The Game. OSU happened to win that game... The "1" big game out of the whole conference for the whole B1G season. And people question why the B1G gets shut out of the playoffs. (Legendary, controversial Bucks coach keeps choking against teams not even anywhere near the CFP radar.)

Somehow, the other highly regarded B1G teams and coaches, who survived the off-season unscathed (How Franklin gets to still feed off of '16 for recruiting), got a pass for sucking last season. They're back ranked in the preseason polls again. So they can be considered a big game if Michigan stumbles to one of them but fade back to the background if Michigan beats them.

☆☆☆☆For the other than "Wake me up when we beat OSU" or "Nothing matters besides OSU" or "The season is an utter failure if we lose to OSU" people.

To make the whole season fun, I want to know which games you think would qualify as Muppet Baby games ...Before the season starts.

These would be the really tough games that have a little more weight than a generic trap game for various reasons.

  • You count it as a win one day but might change it to a loss the next day because you have to find another loss on the schedule somewhere to seem realistic.
  • Beating them means a lot to Michigan's season momentum so you breathe a huge sigh of relief after, but know it will undoubtedly be downgraded from "big game" when Michigan wins, e.g. Wiscy, PSU, MSU, Indy the before the week The Game last year.
  • Destroying a weaker team who thought they had a shot leading up to the game, e.g.  Frostybraska, Minneflecka, Rutger, Fickellcats 2 years ago, Purdue.
  • Whatever personal reason you may have disdain for a particular school.

Seems like every team on our schedule this season now has some kind of significance or a storyline.

  1. Night game kicks it off
  2. Armed forces game
  3. Camp Randall
  4. White Out
  5. Gattis/Don Brown-Locksley Battle
  6. Irish revenge
  7. Hawkeye Homecoming
  8. Playing against, not with Peters
  9. Away game at Indy before "The Game", before turning around and having to play in INDY 2 weeks later. (Knock on woodson??)

All of those storylines are known before the season even starts.

In other words, with this fanbase, Michigan pretty much has to go undefeated. Any game lost before The Game will see Harbaugh get destroyed everywhere. There's almost so much pressure that there is none, which is probably why he seems the calmest he's ever been.

I definitely wouldn't want to be in his spot and I can't think of anybody I'd rather have in his spot.

I dunno man but I would like to see a schedule tougher than ours from top to bottom.

OSU, ND, MSU, at PSU, Iowa, at Wisconsin, Army, at Indiana.

Order of difficulty....

This is really what this season comes down to...period!

That is a lot of thinking to do for a Friday night, and I love all things Muppet.

(...drinks...)

I think what you're asking though is, which result will look better in hindsight, and which worse.

Losing at Happy Valley will look better by year's end, but beating Day and Fields will look worse, in the national media's eyes.

They cannot lose to PSU. That will be a HUGE game for the season and beyond. Whichever team comes out the best out of the Michigan-OSU-PSU matchups controls the B1G recruiting rights.

Franklin is 2-6 in it the past 4 years. If he goes to 2-8, '16 will look like a distant memory. Cant remember if they won their bowl game in '15. If not, they're 1-3 in bowl games also. He benefits so much from Harbaugh hogging the headlines with recruiting.

They're the team I'm most concerned about for that reason.

It's their White out night game from what I understand. Winning that would set them back to 4th in the division.

They already lose to MSU routinely. This year the light will start to really shine on them. People just forgot about them after the "elite" press conference.

Nobody really believes they're a contender but they recruit like one. Two 5? running backs, a top coach, and a stout defense should be in most cases be considered dangerous.

If we're going to talk about Muppets, I'd much rather go with "The Great Muppet Caper" or "Muppets Take Manhattan" or something, at least until we actually NEED to cue the Muppets within the confines of the football or basketball season.

I consider any game that I believe to be 50-50 or worse to be Muppet-worthy.

For me, the following 2019 games would qualify:

  1. @Wisconsin
  2. Notre Dame
  3. @PSU
  4. Ohio State

I think Michigan could lose to Iowa or MSU but those would qualify as upsets by those teams and a win by UM doesn't really move the needle for me.

This is how you know we've recovered from the dark days of RichRod/Hoke. We're back to good ol' days where a season is expected/hoped to contain no more than 2 losses, if contains 3 or 4 everyone's miserable, and ultimately the success of the year hangs only on the OSU game assuming we don't inexplicably shit the bed at some point.

Despite the daunting schedule, Michigan has talent and depth across the offense and while we've got some holes and question marks on defense, none of them seem like a glaring weakness that cannot be overcome. Don Brown ran a top ranked defense at BC. Pretty sure he can get creative with the DT and CB situation.

And while the schedule is daunting by historical standards, UW has no returning quarterback and is bouncing back from a down year,  Iowa is at home so shouldn't be Kinnicky, Penn State has no returning quarterback and is bouncing back from a slightly down year with lots of talent and lots of question marks, MSU has a ??? quarterback and a great defense but may be struggling to score points all year and the talent cliff is quickly approaching and their brakes are out.

In theory, if we're not swamped with injuries, the season in my mind will come down to beating ND at home, handling  PSU which should be doable but at Penn State can be troublesome, and finally winning against OSU.

So I'd say muppets are for @PSU, ND, and OSU.

Beating little brother, a win at Camp Randall, or Iowa at home should be expected this season, IMO.
