OT: Pitcher hits for cycle throws no hitter
Pretty amazing accomplishment.
That must have been fun to watch.
FYI, it was a University of Indianapolis player, 11 strikeouts and hitting in reverse order, a homer and triple in the same inning, then a double and ending with a single.
Next to Shohei Ohtani getting a pitch-clock violation as both a pitcher and a hitter in the same game, this is the most impressive thing I've heard a player do in baseball.
Wow, that's pretty cool!
I'm assuming Drury isn't a baseball powerhouse though.
It doesn't seem like it. Striking out 11 times in a 7 inning game, letting the opposing pitcher hit for the cycle.
I’m guessing they didn’t LET him.
Still pretty amazing accomplishment no matter the level of competition
Good point.
I’ve never heard of this happening before, even in high school.
Well, I'd say that's the most complete, dominating performance in a single baseball game by one player I've ever heard of - and probably ever will hear of. Talk about doing EVERYTHING except sell the hotdogs and popcorn!
One fun trivia question, and I forget most of the answer, is pitchers who threw complete games and hit home runs in 1-0 wins. I know Ruth did it among the most, but a surprising small number of others have also accomplished it.
I like the Rick Wise game: hits two home runs, throws a no hitter. A 4-0 Phillies win vs Sparky Anderson's Reds in 1971
Edit: I was intrigued if a pitcher had hit 2 home runs in a shutout (of any kind) outside of Wise's game. Turns out it happened 4 times in 10 years (1961-71) -- with the Orioles being 1-2 in these games -- but never outside those years:
Milt Pappas (2 RBI in Orioles 3-0 win vs Twins 8/27/61)
Pedro Ramos (5 RBI in Indians 7-0 win vs Orioles 5/30/62*)
Rick Wise (3 RBI in Phillies 4-0 win vs Reds 6/23/71)
Sonny Siebert (all 3 RBI in Red Sox 3-0 win vs Orioles 9/2/71)
Crazy bonus fact: Pappas hit both his home runs off ... Pedro Ramos(!)
And Ramos returned the Orioles the favor just 10 starts later (now pitching on a new team).
(All four victimized pitchers, respectively: Ramos, Chuck Estrada, Ross Grimsley, Pat Dobson)
*Game 1 of doubleheader. BTW Game 2 was the reverse result: BAL 7, CLE 0
I guess I was off about Ruth.
I was surprised too -- he had 17 shutouts (plus one in the World Series) but, from what I can see, didn't hit a home run in any of them.
He was a part of this (lol) however, which I can pretty much guarantee will never be done again:

You just reminded me of a favorite true story about hotdogs, mustard, and a baseball player (Gates Brown of the Tigers):
In a single game- it could be. Johnny Vander Meer throwing back-to-back no hitters is and likely always will be my #1 single player accomplishments.
My first thought was, ‘this Shohei Ohtani guy should be in the hall of fame already’.
Then I clicked the link and realized that he has some competition now.
The closest we'll ever see to a Steve Nebraska
Speaking of Nebraska, we beat them today, 8-6.
Pretty amazing in this PO era. Pretty impressive for a pitcher to be in the batting lineup, even if it is DII. Obviously Shohei is the only caveat that I can currently think of.
Shut it down. No need to play another baseball game, ever.
