OT: Pistons Void Motiejunas and Thornton Trade

Submitted by Everyone Murders on

SVG and the Pistons were obviously not enthralled with the results of the medical exam.  Trade voided, and the draft pick and Joel Anthony are back with the Pistons.

While disappointing on one level, it's good to see that SVG did his due diligence and exercised his option to void what looks like a trade for a player with a wonkier back than hoped.

As one of the few who really love the Pistons, I really appreciate the stones posts on here. I think we've now gotten worse after the deadline with our bench. It'll be a lot harder to make the playoffs now

I'm also disappointed, but I think SVG did a very cagey move here.  He made a trade for potential value, and saw that the Motiejunas's back was not where it needed to be.  Rather than fall in love with his deal, he did the prudent thing and scuttled the trade.

Apart from Joel Anthony getting disrupted, it really was a free look at value by SVG.  With an intensive medical evaluation, the Pistons were kind of playing with house money here.

watched some highlights on motirjunas and have a hard time believing his shots are very reproducible. tons of funky sky hooks.

We are not making the playoffs. We are 2.5 out, and you could argue we are playing worse than anybody in the east sans Brooklyn and Philly. 10-17 last 27 games, given up 100 points in 8 of 9. We really haven't played good basketball in two months.

I liked D-mo but obviously he wasn't healthy, the pick will be in the lottery and at least it will be a small percentage change at Ben Simmons. Not a fan of this draft at all but better having the lottery pick then damaged goods.

I think the Pistons would have got their money's worth trading off the pick. I don't know what has happened to the defense but these guys are pourous. Hopefully KCP gets it together and defensively they step it up a notch; they do those things and they'll still have a shot at making the playoffs. Seriously,  these guys are close to being pretty good if they iron things out.

So I'm actually happy it was rescinded.  7-footers with back injuries do not make for a good long term solution.  And Thornton would be an unrestricted FA this summer so we'd likely lose him and his streaky scoring touch.

I'd rather keep the draft pick because this team was not going to do anything in the playoffs with that defense and lack of leadership.

the Pistons weak bench is even thinner. Instead of an improved bench after the deadline with D-Mo and Thornton, it ended up being down another player (Jennings). Add in Toliver's injury and suddenly its looking like the Pistons might need to take a flyer on a D-League guy because just throwing Baynes and Anthony out there every night isn't going to cut it. Relying on starters to play so much will wear out the team down the stretch and even if they do sneak into the playoffs they would go up against a team that is well-rested.

As someone mentioned above, I do like that the Pistons and SVG did their homework on this one before coming to the decision to finally void the trade. There were some tweets out there yesterday that seemed to indicate that a small army of doctors at the Detroit Medical Center were involved in evaluating Motiejunas' back problems, which didn't seem like a great sign for the life of the trade - they could have chosen to shift some of the protections on the pick, I think, but voiding it is probably the better move in this case.
