OT: People who constantly point out grammar mistakes are pretty much jerks

Submitted by GG Allin on

If there ever were an apropos OT thread, this is it. Besides, it's scientific!

Let the jerks discuss.

Proper grammar is the difference between knowing your shit and knowing you're shit ...

Or helping your uncle, jack, off a horse instead of helping your uncle jack off a horse.

Proper grammar is important!

pretend to be some grammar expert or judge.  However, if we're going to criticize other school's fanbases for their grammar, we should all clean up ours first.  Aside from the expected cell phone typos, I've seen some appalling grammar on this site.  Not a good look.

There a lot of errors at times. It's a message board. Just deal with it. Are you being graded? No. Getting advice when corrected, Yes. Who cares?

Well I can't spend them on anything, so might as well downvote you until you're under zero.  Mission accomplished, it will at least stop you for a little while from creating threads like this.

Amazing how many on here are truly thin skinned jerks. My mission was accomplished as well as I see many took the bait.  It will serve the paper I am writing for my class well. Being the TA is a fan of this site, he'll be amused with my analysis of message board jerks!

I ran the idea by him earlier today and he actually thought it was a great idea.

While he did go to U of M and he's a big football fan he even warned me that you guys take this way too seriously. He was right!

The sad thing is the article hits the nail on the head. I am sure there are some great people on here but there is also a contingent of bona fide jerks. I came in thinking I'd probably get some flak but I didn't think I'd see this much animosity over a post.

I must admit I am grateful. I now have some good quotes and data for my analysis. Thank you! And I truly mean that.

And for the record, I am especially going to use your quote. It clearly and succinctly will make my point.

I downvoted you, a lot, for proclaiming that people are jerks for having a different feeling than you do. I personally don't enjoy people who correct every grammar error, it's annoying, but they are clearly not jerks. It might have something to do with having a step dad who was head of the school districts English department is why it annoys me. Either way, if it makes them feel better to correct others, whether it's because it annoys them or they really want people to sound and act educated.  To each is thier own, name calling is a lazy way of announcing your displeasure.

I don't think it was an opinion. You're attempted takedown is baseless. He referenced a scientific study whose data showed a positive association between a certain behavior (overtly correcting people's grammar mistakes) and empirically measured personality traits generally regarded as negative (openness, agreeableness.. well lack thereof). Jerk is probably a good term for someone possessing negative personality traits.

I agree 100%. Thank you for posting this; I have been called out many times on this board in fact.

I can't stand people like that. I am here to shoot the shit and talk Michigan football with my fellow wolverine fans. I don't give a shit about the grammar and I don't care if you get it wrong either. If I get the point mission accomplished!

Let me know when I am graded or it counts for something and I will sharpen my game.

It's hard to point out grammatical errors and not sound bad. My kids gave me a great T-shirt: I am silently correcting your grammar! Silence is golden. :-)

This is the most idiotic and culturally filthy OT post to the board I have ever seen. Basic language keeps the fabric of society together. If our communicative ability fails simply because we are too busy to stay caught up on how do maintain it, what honestly separates us from animals? This should have been deleted three hours ago.

Can't tell if serious. This article is referring to instances where there is one minor grammatical error and a pedantic person calls someone out for it. It's an expenditure of energy and blog real estate vastly in excess of it's worth (which is nothing in terms of positive outcome). That situation does not amount to, as you described it, a dire destruction of language and perhaps civilization itself. A beauty of language, and of the human brain (it's host), is it's infinite resilience and recursive properties. You can still understand endless unique combinations of written and spoken language even if has eccentricities or irregularities (or even mistakes) that don't comply with the "official" rule book. Kind of amazing if you think about it. I swear, William Faulkner or Cormac McCarthy could post here and people like you would pester them for imperfect grammar or minor errors.
