OT - Ohio State hires former Philly Eagles's DC Bill Davis
I don't know a whole lot about Bill Davis, but it looks like he has spent the last 24 years coaching in the NFL. Most recent stops being:
- Philadelphia Eagles DC (2013-2015)
- Cleveland Browns LB (2011-2012)
- Arizona Cardinals LB/DC (2007-2010)
- San Francisco 49ers DC (2006-2006)
It is unknown if Davis is taking over as solely LB coach, or as a co-DC/LB coach.

If Brian's idea that NFL guys can't stop college spread because it's "beneath them" then I like this hire. Here's to a slow, steady OSU decline.

That would help if we ran a spread

"his" refers to Bill Davis. He was a coach on those teams that faced Harbaugh's 49ers.

I didn't specifically reference UM because everyone here knows what we run. Spread is run throughout college, however, and the more OSU loses the better for us.

Well we don't run a "college spread" and I don't really give a damn how OSU does against the rest of the Big Ten. That said, when the Harbaughfence is operating at peak form I don't think it'll matter much who their DC is. Nobody in football has been able to do much to stop it in the couple years it's been really cooking (2010 Stanford/2012 49ers).

Can't see how that's relevant. The problem with the teams you listed above is in stopping anyone. WVU has a pretty good defense though and Oregon did too some years. The argument has been that running their offense hurts their defense. That hasn't been a problem for OSU.

How many co-co-co-Defensive coaches does one need?
December 21st, 2016 at 3:39 PM ^
I'd assume he is replacing Fickell, who took over at Cincinnati.

Maybe Schiano is leaving too.

Every spread offense to come into the NFL has been eliminated by within a year. Not just spread either, West Coast is dead. Pistol, Wildcat.

I'd be surprised if Davis isn't being hired as a co-DC/LB coach, but Urban did hint that current ST coordinator and CB coach, Kerry Coombs was due for a increased role on defense:
Great news! My rt-hand man, Kerry Coombs, is a Buckeye! In add to coordinating the SPT, he will have an expanded coordinating role on our D
— Urban Meyer (@OSUCoachMeyer) December 10, 2016
Whether that means Coombs get promoted to co-DC, or "defensive backs coordinator," I have no idea.
December 21st, 2016 at 3:30 PM ^
Urban said he increased his role on D, because after signing day Coombs will probably bail for another job..

Hiring a former pro coach to defend against a certain pro-style team perhaps?

Who is this former NFL DC already on staff that you speak of?

C'mon man, I know what he meant. I was trying to get him to admit he screwed up!
December 21st, 2016 at 2:47 PM ^
What the fuck does that have to do with anything? We're talking about the one you just hired, are we not, ie, a certain pro coach to defend a certain pro-style team, perhaps? You know, instead of maybe hiring a spread focused DC? And smart people can tell by the way I phrased my post as a question that I acknowledge it's just speculation for purposes of discussion.
You're an idiot, and based on your oxymoronic name, is redundant to say.

Urban Meyer trying to get NFL contacts so he can make the move to the Browns or 49ers next year.

Just another case of Ohio copying and doing the same thing as Michigan. With all of their cockiness and dumbness, I wonder if any of them know how much lesser they look than UM despite all of their success on the field. They've won how many of the last rivalry games and had 10 win seasons over and over. Yet, they still lose recruiting battles over and over to the good guys. That has to suck so bad to always be in the shadow even though they've had good teams. I see where the envy and hate comes from. Man do I love it. Oh and their defense doesn't have a prayer against this future Michigan offense!

But they still retain Zach Smith - which cancels out the only pro coach on the staff.
December 21st, 2016 at 3:02 PM ^
Zach Smith can definitely come off as immature on twitter, but I can't argue against his recults as a recruiter.
December 21st, 2016 at 7:13 PM ^
Can certainly argue against his ability to coach up his position though
December 21st, 2016 at 2:54 PM ^
Sure, they really need help with recruiting. They can't get anyone to go there.

Urban Meyer hired a public masturbator to his coaching staff?
December 21st, 2016 at 6:27 PM ^
December 21st, 2016 at 2:48 PM ^
If that's the case, it sounds like Urban is just trying to increase his years of NFL experience coaching stat for his recruiting brochure so he can compete with the Harbaugh.

One of the perceived problems with nfl coaches is that some also have trouble adapting to the inferior talent/knowledge of college players that may have difficulty executing pro-style schemes.
So yes, can a guy who coaches terrible nfl teams really do better with players not as experienced or physically skilled?

Miami fans remember Fisch as an OC and think he was the only competent coach on Al Golden's staff.
Btw, the Jaguars didn't improve even after firing Fisch (and hiring Doug Marrone as an AHC/OL coach) which indicates far greater/bigger/deeper problems.
Fisch was used as the scapegoat.
