OT: New Tiger Norris could be the next coming of the Bird

Submitted by yossarians tree on

You never know how a "top-prospect" is going to pan out on the field, but this kid is a truly eccentric and thoughtful dude. Actually, the more apt comparison rather than Mark Fidrych would be Bill "Spaceman" Lee--except without the drugs and alcohol. Perhaps a cross of the two...The Spacebird, as it were.

This guy might be my new favorite Tiger. Looking forward to seeing him in the old English D and seeing how he handles the potential stardom that seems to be on the horizon.

What a year he had in 76 before he hurt his knee in 77 (goofing around in the outfield), came back too soon, and hurt his arm.

He threw about 90, but he was always at knee-level with crazy slider-like movement on his ball.

I like this guy.   I love the story about how all of the Jays prospects, after getting their signing bonus $$$$ deposited into their accounts, went on a shopping orgy.  Norris bought a t-shirt...that's all.   His signing bonus money is tucked away in an investment account.   That's music to my ears.   This guy's a tad eccentric, but he's got his priorities straight in so many ways.

Had to log in to agree with you.  Loved Fidrych and there will not be another.  There was an "iron on" decal/picture in the newspaper that said "The Bird Is The Word" and my mom put it on a white t-shirt for me.  It probably looked pretty lame, but I didn't care--I couldn't have been happier to have that shirt.  It can never again be like it was in those days when we were that age.

Yeah, Norris seems a slightly different brand of eccentric than Bill Lee, but there are elements of Lee-type behavior in there. After all, Lee was the same person who wanted the Red Sox to give him 337 as a number so when people asked who he was all he had to do was stand on his head (I don't know that this would be Norris' style, but then I could be wrong). He also threw some great quotes in mix in his career too, and I can see Norris doing that as well actually. I mean, he did in this article.

I like to think that if I had millions of dollars thrown my way, I'd do something similar. Am I odd to think that I'd need a million dollars to be able to live in a van?
