OT: MSU to have largest incoming freshman class in school history

Submitted by Maize and Luke on
Ultimately I don't really care about their school enrollment but I did find this interesting and a bit perplexing. After such a highly publicized scandal and the despicable way it's been handled since this just comes as a big surprise to me. Apparently a public institution can be found guilty of deplorable acts and conduct, and still come out smelling like a rose. I guess my advice to MSU would be, keep doing what you're doing. Apparently it's working. Yikes. https://msutoday.msu.edu/news/2018/msu-to-welcome-largest-most-diverse-…

of UM-Ann Arbor don't want to hear anything about the other in-state U-M Schools as they relate to the actual University of Michigan.  I get it, it is what it is.  As a UM-Flint graduate, however, assuming he is not going to get into UM-Ann Arbor (a pretty safe bet if his 4th grade math test last week was any indicator), I am going to heavily advocate for UM-Flint if he opts to go to college and stay in-state.  Can't speak for Dearborn, but I have nothing but positive things to say about UM-Flint, it was awesome, and it has served me very well.  The addition of pretty substantial on-campus housing and the mini-renaissance of downtown Flint has made it even more accessible as well.

Tell me if I am wrong here, OP, but it seems like you're implying that people are ignoring what is happening at MSU, which I wouldn't presume is the case here, at least not with everyone who apparently wishes to attend MSU. I think what it is more likely saying is that people choose schools for reasons other than things like the Nassar scandal, and perhaps even in full knowledge of it. I mean, as one example, if you were dead set on being a veterinary physician and could only afford to remain in-state, where else are you going?

I think MSU's reputation as an institution is forever damaged, and they do not smell like a rose nor will they again, but it is a lot of other factors that push people to the schools they attend.

Kids that were borderline or on the outside looking in were suddenly offered acceptance.

This is a big PR stunt if nothing else.

"All is well in EL"

I'm still surprised a lot of parents fell for this and would want their kids there.

I don't know about that. I've never heard of anyone getting rejected from MSU. I'm sure it happens but MSU exists to be a four-year community college for the people of the State of Michigan. In other words, they've never been very selective in who they will accept, which is why their student body is enormous. As long as you turn in all of your homework in high school you can go there.

Did anyone actually click the link? Judging by the photo on the page, MSU accomplished this by tricking their incoming freshmen into thinking they were going to Michigan.  Or maybe Syracuse.  Maize and Blue! And Orange!

me to say it - but MSU is still one of your best options in the state for a University/College, particularly if you cannot afford a private school.  If you can't get into U-M (and it is a bitch these days), and you wanted to stay in state - where else would you go?  Maybe Western Michigan for business, or Michigan Tech for engineering.  Alma, Kalamazoo, Albion, etc - way overpriced.  Would put Sparty above EMU, Wayne State, Oakland, Northern Michigan, all such others.

Sparty will not have an attendance problem for a while...

My daughter is a junior who won't have the ACT score to get into UM but I hate the idea of her going to MSU with the atmosphere there. Her brother went to GVSU which is a real up and coming school to me but I can't find a good option after UM for her.

An in-state student with the stats to apply to Ann Arbor but doesn't get in is going to haul in bigtime merit scholarships from every college you named, plus out-of-state options. Indiana and Alabama are especially generous. Alabama offers a full-ride to out-of-state students who score over a 30 on the ACT. https://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out-of-state.php

my child run drugs and launder money than end up at that vile training academy for brotard rapists. The standards for admission are exceedingly low, and the standards for behavior even lower. A trash school.

Michigan State is an above average university with a similar academic reputation.  While the the admininstration has been a miserable failure, it should be noted that there are many wonderful people working and/or attending school there.  With the exception of the late Ron Mason, their athletic department has always been a cespool.  That being said, I think a degree from MSU MAY do more for you in life than one from Western or Central (depending on the area of study).  Their job placement program is wider reaching.

My son is going to CMU this fall (3.5 GPA - 1230 SAT).  Fits the scenario of the solid student, but would never get into Michigan.  Loves Michigan, but not in the cards for him.  He is very excited about going to CMU.

My point is to say that Michigan 'only' has 2 in state options for quality school is selling the state very short.

Western (even with its reputation of a party school)

Central (ditto as above)

GVSU

Michigan Tech

All are very good schools with programs that offer plenty for a student that is willing to go to school and make something of them selves.

Obviously, Michigan stands ahead of all the other, just point out there are more options in state.

On another note, did anyone else notice that in last week graduation at MSU, Engler was on stage to shake hands with the graduates.  Instead of shaking his hand most student stood him up and dropped a teal rose on the stage.  Student after student did this and the pile just grew.  For those who might not know.  The Teal Rose is a sign of support for the abused victums.  That was awesome, I believe the point here is the BOT and Engler are complete buffoons, but the student populas (in the majority general) is very upset with what is going on......

No doubt a growing proportion of students reliant upon larger and larger student loans. A huge millstone around the neck upon graduation. Not just MSU, but everywhere.

I don't think the scandal is a deterrant to in state kids who can no longer get into UM and are choosing MSU instead.  USC is shooting up the academic rankings and has had record applications because of the same phenomenon at UCLA.

Michigan State becomes the 14th and final Big Ten University to use the Common App next fall.  This means that they could have even higher levels of application than they did this year since it's one less step than previous to apply there.

Also, this is one of the leading reasons Michigan's app pool has swelled during the last decade, especially among out of state students, its now much easier to take a flier on Michigan than previously.

Michigan would have class sizes of 25-30,000 if they admitted every student that applied and still have higher average student GPA and test scores than MSU.

Sorry to post this but when now their football team has won so much over the past decade, it is a marketing effect.
