OT: MNF Open Thread

I still think the Sun Belt should be the featured undercard for MNF. Have MNF start at half time of the NCAA game, as no one really cares about the Sun Belt anyway. That said, the game is on. They're already gushing over Ty Law. "ZOMG! HE JUST GOT HERE IN THIS ALTITUDE NEVER PLAYED NICKELBACK BEFORE!!1!" So yeah, discussion goes here.

I believe it's real. I have a buddy that I have run multiple marathons with at low altitudes. He moved to Denver and had his long distance running capacity decimated. He just had no gas and felt tired all of the time during his runs. Eventually, he overcame it, but it took awhile. The air is thinner at higher altitudes, which means oxygen pressure is lower. Thus the heart must work harder by beating faster to meet the body's oxygen needs. So yeah, it's real.

It is a bit of an endurance problem, but it's not a huge deal. The Rockies actually did a study on this when they first started as a franchise. They studied both how it affects the body and the effects on the gameplay. They concluded, IIRC, that the altitude really can set a player back during sustained heavy breathing. In order to prepare their players, they placed almost all of their minor league franchises up in high altitude cities such as Colorado Springs(6k ft) Asheville, NC (2k ft), and Casper, WY (5k).

Just wondering....do you think the type of sport you play has an impact? In baseball there is so much down time and standing around. There isn't constant motion like with a sport like hockey (for example). Or long distance running. But I never recall hearing or reading about this as big deal whenever the Red Wings play the Avalanche. Hmmm.

Though hockey is a different animal than baseball or football. Hockey, on an endurance level, is relatively level across the board. What I mean is that almost everyone is exerting the same amount of force on each play. That is definitely not true in football, and especially not baseball. Imagine a running back who is assigned to block for two plays in a row while the receivers and cornerbacks are burning ass all over the place. The backs will have more in the tank after those two plays. Regardless. It matters.

It's definitely less of an impact on baseball where 85% or more is quick motion. It's a little bit on pitchers as they go through games and have to work harder, and very slight on the basepaths/running through the outfield. Football is probably between hockey/soccer on the effects. There can be quite a bit of constant hard work, but a lot of it is explosive short bursts. I'm not sure how it changes once you go inside. I doubt the stadium would oxygenize (is there a word for this?) the atmosphere to try and keep athletes healthier, or would they bank on their team being used to the oxygen depleted atmosphere. But yeah, I would expect it to be much worse in hockey, soccer, or any sport where you're constantly moving.

I was at the game Saturday and saw the same thing we've all seen all year: Mike Williams is a really bad football player. I don't have anything against him personally, don't know him from the guy working at the BP. And I'm certainly no Steve Sharik in terms of football knowledge, but Williams is atrocious. I'm surprised his UFR numbers aren't worse, actually. He seemed to be either out of position or, even when in position, taking atrocious angles on almost every play. Time to put Troy back at Strong, Jordan back at Free, and J.T. Floyd back at the corner opposite Donovan. I know the State game was Chinese water torture, but we only gave up 20 that game to a team that's better than the last two we just lost to, giving up 38 both times to do it. Q for Coach Sharik: do you see any indications that our secondary coach is not good? I mean, can Mike Williams just be that dumb where he can't pick anything up? If that were the case, wouldn't some other guys like B. Smith, Emilien, Mike Jones, Turner, the trainer, be passing him by now? Man, I wish I was back in school again...

Space emperor of space is going to rule on high from a throne atop the rockies. In all seriousness, Broncos punting game has been an atrocity this year, I expect them to draft a punter high.
