OT: Mike Nesmith of the Monkees dead

The only member of the Byrds playing on the single "Mr. Tambourine Man" is McGuinn. The rest are the same studio musicians (known as "The Wrecking Crew") that The Monkees used. The Wrecking Crew were also used heavily by The Beach Boys and Paul Revere and the Raiders.

Great documentary on the Wrecking Crew . . . .

I'm not a big country music guy generally but I like Nesmith's country rock albums from the early '70s

Nesmith was also a fairly prolific music producer and had many projects beyond The Monkees. He also was behind "Michael Nesmith In Television Parts", which ran for five episodes but was actually kind of funny and pioneering in its own right - one episode (well, one sketch in one episode) served as the launchpad for "It's Gary Shandling's Show", in fact.

You Just May Be The One is one of my favorite Monkees songs. Apparently, this video is from early October, so he was still rockin'. RIP good sir.

This news really bums me out. The Monkees are one of my three favorite bands of all time. I've seen them in concert a lot over the years, but when Mike came back into the fold about 10 years ago - it was amazing for us Monkees fans who waited decades to see him tour. Say what you want about the band's origins, their songwriting was top notch and the songs were fantastic for the time. Also, and maybe most impressive for their haters, are their album sales - 75 Millions albums worldwide. This is a sad day for all the people who love them.

Such a bummer... He's was a very funny guy. RIP

Forever Crusin' with Lucy and Ramona and their brother Sunset Sam.

By the way, Sunset Sam was a very young Hulk Hogan.

That's a bummer. The Monkees are a cultural icon second to few. Far better musically than the popular perception.

Few people know that Mike taught Davy Jones how to become such an awesome tambourine player. RIP Mr. Nesmith.

I liked the Monkees, somewhat, until I found out my college girlfriend slept with Micky Dolenz's brother when they were on tour.
That kind of soured it for me...

Interesting.
Her brother(s) potentially could have 9 months later become Monkee's uncle's.

Sorry to be the turd in the punchbowl that ruins a good story, but for the sake of blog accuracy, Mickey Dolenz doesn't have any brothers.

The true musician of the group. RIP.

He was my favorite. I remember watching them on live TV when I was 6, then later in reruns through the early 70s.
