OT - MgoBloggers Guide to Rome, IT

Submitted by brewandbluesaturdays on February 7th, 2020 at 1:44 PM

I am going back to the well that always brings it with solid feedback.

I have a work trip scheduled for Zurich at the beginning of April. At the end of my work week the MgoWife will be meeting me and we will be traveling to Italy for vacation. We will be starting in Florence, where I have been and still have some great suggestions of sites, food, etc...  from the last time I reached out to the board to knock out.

Following Florence, we will be heading to Rome for 3 days. Looking for any and all suggestions (popular and off the beaten path) for sites, activities, and restaurants during our time in Rome. Thanks in advance.

If you're a big history fan, you definitely can't see Rome in 2 days. I took all day to see the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and forum (it's a combined ticket). Literally in Rome now and haven't been to the Vatican yet, which could easily be an entire day in itself.

It's also just great to walk around Rome. You'll see cool stuff from 2000 years ago that you never knew is even here. I just ran across some nice little area in the Jewish Ghetto.

Update: I posted that. Walked out of a bar for about 2 minutes and came across more random 2000 year old ruins. Largo di Torre Argentina. Not stuff you'd go out of your way for really. But it's sprinkled all over.

I like the areas a bit south and east of the center. Check out the Testaccio markets. For great high-end dining, Restaurant of the Temple of Isis. Trastevere to hang out in the evenings. The Ghetto is good, too.

Been to Italy 4 times for business and pleasure. All the touristy places are just that...touristy.  Also, there is a shit load of people that make you wanna cringe.
My biggest advice?  Rent a car for cheap and drive anywhere you want....except Rome and Venice ;)
Lake Garda is beautiful. Many pretty cities around it. We stayed in sirmione but there are a lot more cool places.  You can drive to Verona easily from there as well.

Verona is cool and one of my faves for “bigger” cities.

Depends when you go. I'm here in the low season and the amount of tourists isn't too bad. It's been far worse in Rome than anywhere else I've been in Italy so far. I don't think I'd want to visit Italy in the busy season. At least not I'd I'd do anything touristy. Early April seems not too bad but I don't know. This is my first time here.

Chiesa di Sant'Andrea al Quirinale wouldn’t make any list of the top twenty most well known churches in Rome.

Wandered into this tiny church with no expectations, only to be greeted by a Bernini mini-masterpiece.    There is beauty everywhere in Rome.   Explore.  Enjoy.
